The look of the monster alone is terrifying...Guillermo really knows how to put a chill to anyone's spine.
And knows how to make a monster tragic and has cool designs
Always great at making unique monsters, Pans Labyrinth, Hell boy, Pacific rim have great monster designs.
So does Scott Cooper
Another example of the host still having his humanity, if u listen closely in the scene when julia goes to rescue Lucas and Aiden in the mine after they both returned there with the wendigo you can hear the wendigo stutter a moment than say in a deep hoarse like tone "stop" when Julia starts taking random shots in the dark hoping to hit the wendigo my thoughts is that he said it to either protect Lucas and Aiden from getting hit with a stray bullet from Julia just taking shots in the dark or simply for her to stop shooting at him
One of the things this movie does so well is capture the feeling of a dying town. I grew up in the rust belt (states include Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio and parts of Indiana) and I went to college in a dying coal mining town. The setting is so similar to where I went to college that I thought that the film was set in West Virginia when I first saw the trailer.
I had never heard of this movie, but is now at the top of my to see list. I love to watch mysticisms brought to life.
It’s horrible
@@user-bg1ls5cd1h The video you're under says otherwise. And give some points to back yourself up otherwise you won't be taken seriously.
@@HishamA.N_Comicbroe like how the wendigo just lets the girl hack him with an axe at the end of the movie after obliterating the 2 cops like 30 mins prior. And those 2 cops were just the most retarded dudes ever, they heard the wendigo screeching in the distance and they just walk into the shed and stare at the dead bodies like “I wonder what could have done this???” And let their guard down and they both get butt fucked. Plus the writing was pretty weak and the only real tense scenes are of the kid at home dealing with the dad transforming. Everything else like the main chicks flashbacks and the cop/brother character were just boring
You won't be disappointed.
@@user-bg1ls5cd1h I disagree.
Truth be told I wasn't sure about this one when it showed up in my recommendations, but you've convinced me to watch, nice work.
You really are the "go to" for monster movie explanations. Thank you sir.
I've waited two years to see this movie and I was SO happy that I finally got a chance to see it.
Me too haha
What did you think of the film??? Worth the wait?
I saw it too and I LOVE it
I listened to the audio of the Quiet Boy. I think it's better in a few places such as the ambiguous ending on what happened to the boy and teacher, on that same note however the film does a much better job at depicting the boy's standing with his classmates (in the short story basically no one cared about him enough to bully him or ostracize him) and the teacher's seeming obsession with this kid. I've always been fascinated by the Wendigo legend, there are plenty of stories out there such as the Quiet Boy and the real life Wendigo hunter Jack Fiddler but not alot of big budget movies. This is a great creature to learn about!
How can u hunt something that’s a myth?
I agree when it comes to supernatural or criptids the wendigo is my favorite and would love to see more stories and movies about them.
It's funny I never wanted to see this movie but Niat just hits different! Thank you sir, I would like to see the Globglo Gabula explained. 👍👍👍👍
Not sure what that is, but will look into it champ!
I loved this movie. Really stuck with me after watching. I saw some were disappointed because they wanted more gore but this movie had plenty. The way that bully lets out that little pleading voice omg. Also this movie hits home what many small towns in the rural United States are experiencing
It has its issues. The monster itself is quite interesting, mixing both plausible biology and the more spiritual stuff nicely into a very interesting monster. My main issue is the monster itself had such little screen time and died in such a lack luster way. The wendigo is a monster of monsterous strength and destruction and some ex drunk teacher killed it. The fight was also really lame. Her and the wendigo just trading blows. The wendigo not even landing a hit, just slightly swinging it's arms before getting stabbed over and over again. Also I found the whole heat of the wendigo to be weird as wendigo are more widely associated with the cold of winter
@@nickbutler9831 Everything has its issues and just because I loved it, doesn’t mean you should. I wouldn’t go into any Del Toro movie expecting a mindless monster fight tho imo but maybe that’s one of the reasons I loved it :)
@@miguesama8824 they didnt say you didnt have to love it, they gave you critism why it wasnt as good as you think, normally youd retort with a counter argument but here we go.
@@towlie4029 oh I forget you’re the CZcams comment authority 😂
thank god! always a good day..
Oh... Roanoke just did this one! Love it when you both do the same movie because we get an analysis from multiple view points. I prefer the more traditional wendigo but this is a very interesting movie
Movie is critically underrated. One of my favorite movies of 2021.
I love your channel man. I’ve discovered some pretty awesome movies from you and seen reviews of some absolute favorites of mine. Great work brother!
Thanks Reed!
Never heard of this movie, thank you so much!
This movie was great. Just watched it last week. Had been waiting to see it
i like how they use both versions of the wendigo in the movie, the hairless lanky humans and the giant deer like monster
As someone who lives in Oregon this movie hit differently for me; in a good way!
I've never been so glad to live in the Eastern part of Oregon;)
In my opinion, the movie did a great job with the setting of showing a dying community and the dreary, dark ambience of what that dying feels and looks like. The characters are believable and the performances of them are great. The visual effects are top notch. Where the movie falls short and becomes an average horror/suspense movie is the third act. It strays far away from the source material and becomes another average creature feature that turns predictable and anticlimactic at the end. The Wendigo in the short story is presented as a spirit, not as a physical alteration of the body it possesses. The third act really hurts this movie. Which is unfortunate because I was really hoping it would have been a top tier horror/suspense movie after reading the short story it's based upon. I highly recommend people to read it. You won't forget it.
the ending really got me man, heart breaking and also terrifying
Del Toro has great ideas, but he often struggles with properly progressing the plot from beginning to the end. Looks to me like this flaw still applies even if he's a producer
Great movie! I watched it before clicking on another of your awesome videos!
Thanks for making a video on it!
Love Del Toros monsters but this had the same problem as most other horrors, anti climatic ending
Yeah i enjoyed this movie but the ending was weak and made the creature look easy to kill rather than giving us any real concern for the safety of the teacher ( i know plot armour told us that when it was feeding it was in a weakened state but still ) the lack of screen time and fight back from the creature was disappointing and i personally believe this is what hurt the movies appeal and that's a real shame because i would have been interested in seeing how the story would have progressed with the cop now that he was infected.
Insidious is good

Loved it!
I love this movie I've already watched it 4 times
Guillermo has this fascinating ability to make such beautiful movies in spite of the raw and uncensored nature of his monsters. Maybe it's because of his monsters that they become all the more beautiful. Without the dichotomy of the pain and fear and disgust, there's no levity nor beauty to enjoy.
great vid
I still need to see this film, though I have read the short story.
Love the analysis and love the way you incorporate the music into your videos. It always brightens my day.
The Ritual is also a pretty good monster movie with great underlying messages/tones
Thank you! Glad you’re enjoying the videos :)
Fully agree with you on both points.
This is both a sad and terrifying horror film, especially the scene where the bully, whom always picks in Lucas, ends up getting attacked and killed by the Wendigo.
What do you mean Sad and Terrifying? That Bully got what he deserved, and should be a warning to all bullies to stop or get killed.
@@Jirodyne He wanted to become friends with Lucas which is the reason why he bullied him. He just wanted to toughen him, to see if Lucas could stand up to himself. He wasn't harm Lucas. He could have at least just talk to him.
@@shainewhite2781 Lucas doesn't know that tho. And that bullying could have traumatized him. I mean he literally hated him enough that he let the Wendigo eat him and didn't get upset by it.
@@Jirodyne he feared for his own safety. That's why he ran away. I don't think he knew or thought he could control the beast.
@@shainewhite2781yea bs he tried to make him eat literal shit. Even if his intentions were good, his actions made him a POS who deserved what he got
This analysis and movie are both insane and haunting.
Enjoyed it, for what it is its well entertaining and a bit of horror and urban legend.
The only part this film miss is how one becomes a Wendigo. In this film you can somehow "catches" it after you've been attacked by one (or the spirit of wendigo "infects" other victim), instead of after performing an act of cannibalism out of desperation.
Also, I wonder where the first Wendigo in the tunnel come from? The movie intentionally left it to mystery.
Not quite remember the Indian said in the Legend a man was locked in the mountain..... The same mountain that was mined in the movie
Shout out to Oregon!
Of course Guillermo is involved in this awesome movie....
I had some huge expectations for this film, as this movie's trailers were one of the first things ive watched in youtube after playing until dawn. The film had some peaks, but it all felt like a modern horror movie though. Imo, i give it a 7/10
I give it a 4. Didn’t see much of the beast or the origins really except the men getting attacked in the mines
Such a good movie
The windigo make over is on point
I remember seeing a couple commercials for this movie but never seeing a release date I guess this movie came out and didn’t get that much attention but I remember wanting to see it.
My best friend and I when watching this were both trying to pick out where this was filmed because several areas on the Oregon coast where we have lived do look like this movie. We were surprised that it was not filmed in Oregon due to how similar it looks to one of the areas we have been to.
Coos Bay was one
Del Toro always has amazing creature designs
I really liked “Antlers”. It’s a cool take on the Wendigo myth. I watched this shortly after playing “Until Dawn” when I was on a Wendigo kick

Favorite monster horror movie
Great concept, haunting atmosphere, phenomenal acting, the creature looks amazing and terrifying. But I wasn’t too big on the overall structure, plus I felt like we needed more if it stalking people in the woods. It’s a Wendigo, that’s what they do in all the stories I hear.
less of a scary movie more of a sad past one
The Wendigo in this film strongly resembles the Cleric Beast from Bloodborne, not just in appearance but even with its screams. I know that the Cleric Beast was inspired by the Wendigo and Wechuge, but since this film came after, I can’t help but see the obvious similarities between the Antlers Wendigo and the Cleric Beast. Seeing the skull and hearing the screams it made during the final fight in the mine, took me back to fighting the Cleric Beast and Laurence the First Vicar in Bloodborne. I know it’s not the most accurate of designs, but I adore this design of the creature, despite it not being an accurate Wendigo in appearance
Thanks for the video!! See you later!! Stay safe.😉
1:55 reminds me of the halo 4 infected sound
It is sad that I never even heard of this movie coming here where I live. I would have watched this.
Heya Niyatacus 🙋♂️
I haven't seen this one, it looks pretty good. What are your thoughts on the Subspecies series? I love nasty practical effects
This movie suffered from Rona delays, and a lack of advertising. A shame, because I really enjoyed it. I also highly recommend the short story, you can find it online to read for free, and it is wonderful and heartbreaking!
When the wendigos start making odogaron noises monster hunter people start having flash backs
This movie scared the crap outta me, I only watched it once in theaters. Great movie in my opinion.
You gonna do back for blood content? seem like it be up you alley with the horror/scifi aspects.
I've never liked the Wendigo depicted as a deer-like creature because this comes from modern pop culture, not folklore and Supermassive's depiction in Until Dawn is much closer to my ideal version (simply a gaunt, possessed human with sharp teeth, claws, elongated limbs, enhanced strength, speed and senses. The Wendigo doesn't need to be anything more than this IMHO). However, despite the fact the deer-creature isn't my favourite depiction of the Wendigo, it DOES MAKE a great monster and I enjoyed the film a lot.
There are lots of depections of what a wendigo looked like. Some had horns some didn't. I do think myself the more human like form of just a gaunt human can be more terrifying than deer monster. But I did enjoy this style of the wendigo.
There is a deer-like cryptid in Native American legends, but people keep confusing it with Wendigo when they're separate.
Well the native american legend depicts it as a deer like creature so.
@@frivolousarguments8578 The wendigo has deer like features. It's precisely as it should look.
@@lactoseandintolerant7601
The deer-like Wendigo ISN'T one universally shared by the Native peoples of the United States and Canada. Some traditions describe it as simply an emaciated corpse with claws and fangs.
The wendigo design was absolutely beautiful
And on point,too
Reminds me of the 2012 movie The Ritual
Any chance we could get "knowing" explained?
SPOILERS
Guillermo del Toro is a master of tension and atmosphere and it showed in the first 2/3 of the film. The climax and finale fell flat for me: the film dissolved into a generic monster flick.
The human skin face mask was pretty metal tho.
I like that to. Kinda like him sheding his last semplice of humanity willingly. I wish the fight was better, not just "swing, mis, stabbed, swing, miss, stabbed"
Whats this movie called I'm starting to like it
I don't want to be rude or anything but as an Algonquin native it it pronounced the way its spelt (al-gon-kwin) again this is all love and no hate, I adore this whole channel and all of its videos ❤
Coooool
Hey does anyone know the name of the instrumental he uses at the end of his videos?
The look of the Wendigo reminded me of Sameal from hellboy, which was also made by Del Toro.
There's always a native to reveal the true nature of the threat.
I like the movie Because I love creature features
I think it also tuches on abuse and man nature. A touch I frankly wasn't very happy about.
The kid protagonist is great, he's going places.
cool
I love Guillermo Del Toro's work as the man himself is one of the most gifted person when it comes to creature creations......but in the ending, the wendigo was too easily finished
Imagine making such a detailed cool looking monster and then making the movie pitch black.
Can you do Channel Zero next? It's more of Nick Antosca's work
Imagine a film similar but focused on the Skin Walker, I'd love to see Guillermo del Toro do take on it
I really liked this movie, anything about wendigos are interesting to me, I just would really wanna see a movie sort of similar to until dawn tho I think that would be great
Do The Ancient Enemy from The Phantoms.
I assumed Paul was infected when the Wendigo injured him, rather than anything to do with a "spirit" attaching itself to him. Like how a Werewolf can infect someone else when they scratch or bit that other person.
One of the best horror movies I've seen in a while.
Everyone knows you have to use fire to destroy a Wendigo and it's soul, therefore stopping it from infecting a new host.
It's good to see Not-Matt Damon getting work.
Saw it only once so far & thought it was cool . Definitely the right amount of being omnibus & creepy
One detail from the movie : The wendigo spirit was not "ready", it came out of the body just after the first human consumption. All of the previous behavior was to force the host to consume human flesh, and once that is done it is the time for the creature to burst out.
The only question I have about this film is ; who and what happened to the first wendigo that infected the dad?
Do Yuriko Omega Next
I was hype for this movie the moment the first trailer was aired. After years of waiting I finally got to see it, only to be disappointed.
I still enjoyed the film to some extent. But some scenes left me with more questions than answers.
Like, why did the movie try to take such a hard turn into the sexual abuse backstory of the teacher? Why did the father wendigo not eat the two officers? How was the teacher able to kill it so darn easily??
Most people laughed at the ending fight in the theater cuz of how ridiculous it was.
Some argue the pace in the first 2/3rds of the film was slow af but I enjoyed it. I felt they rushed the hell out of the ending though
Same issues I had. I liked how they changed up the windigo a bit so it's not the same most people know of. But a wendigo is a beast of insatiable hunger. The first officer should have been devoured and the 2nd have his arm removed from the monster eating it. I also hated how it died. They stood like 5 feet apart and it lazily swung at the girl just to get stabbed. If killing it was as easy as letting it eat a bear, making a small fire, and then stabbing it, then why would the natives really fear it more than a bear? She had no training or experience with fighting anything. Another thing I didn't like is that wendigos are almost always associated with winter and the cold. Why was the wendigo in this movie hot temperature wise? It's heart should have been an ice cube
Jesus Christ y’all are insufferable lol
Yeah, the movie was disappointing. I cant get over the fact that the wendigos kill count was just 3 🙄
@@dcul8812 how so?
