So appreciate the research and common sense here. I have baby fine and thin hair. I’m now in my 50’s. I started in January to implement your advise. I got results, not just noticed by myself but I’m now getting comments like, “your hair looks thicker”. That is amazing! I never knew how fragile my hair was. I am now gentle with it, way less heat, protective styles, shower filter, oils, healthy eating, and msm. Making friends with the way your hair is naturally…is important. Be content, worry less about what others think. Enjoy what the Lord made.🙂

Gray and silver are my favorite, along with copper reds. If I grow silver hair like my tia on my moms' side I will just not need to color it. I will do gloss treatments to cut out the yellows caused by hard water. No amount of filtering cuts the hard water that is Hialeah Caca Water system.

I love your take on grey hair. I heard back in the day that shepards would move their flocks from pasture to pasture when their darker sheep would start to turn lighter in color. This was due to not enough minerals in their diet. Greys show up more quickly on those of us with darker hair, like those sheep.
I thought this was interesting because my hair stopped getting grey when I started to destress and eat more proteins ect, foods in higher minerals.

As someone who has had long hair for decades, I mostly agree with everything said here and in her related hair care videos. But I have very different hair than Katherine (who has gorgeous, curly, DRY hair.). Maybe my routine below will help people adapt the important principles Katherine teaches to their own hair.
My hair is medium fine and mostly straight. It is oily with a tendency toward itchy, yeast-caused dandruff. My ends would be happy never being washed. My scalp wants a daily bath. So it's a balance.
I have learned that to extend the time between washes, I MUST USE HEAT on my scalp. Otherwise, the yeast sets in and starts causing itchiness and dandruff by day 2. Also, no-poo options always leave my hair with way too much oil and itchiness.
So I combine "new" hair care with "historic" hair care with great success. (Basically, combine the Blowout professor with Katherine and a touch of Abby Yung and you have it.)
Wash day One Day a Week only using professional, modern methods. This is scalp care that protects ends.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Prewash: oil ends only to protect against the coming heat and moisture.
Shower: HOT water to shampoo. Tepid water to rinse out conditioner.
Shower Products: professional shampoo (wash scalp only, not hair... then rinse and repeat). professional conditioner on mids/ends only.
Post-Shower: Microfiber wrap for 15 minutes, then Professional leave-in conditioner and detangle with Wet brush. Then professional heat protectant.
Dry: Blow dryer on hot with ceramic boar bristle brush to shape. Make sure the scalp takes most of the heat focus, to kill yeast.
Between washes. Historic methods that protect ends and dry clean hair.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Limit handling hair to a detangle/style both AM and PM. Midday handling increases scalp oils.
Nightly, use homemade dry shampoo and a boar bristle brush to "dry wash".
Nightly, if root hair feels dry, lightly oil ends of hair. If root hair feels a bit iffy, do NOT oil ends of hair.
Nightly, style hair "up" (loose milk maids/loose bun on top of hair). If root hair feels iffy, the style should stuff the ends of the hair up at the crown (ends will soak up the oil and give my scalp an extra day.) Wrap head in a silk scarf to significantly reduce braid shed and breakage.
Morning, detangle with Wet Brush. only oil ends with a few drops of lightweight hair oil if they seem dry and dull. wear hair loose day one or two - otherwise use protective hair styles (Katherine has awesome videos on this.)
By combining methods this way I have had great success in extending time between washes and avoiding build up of sebum on the scalp or excessive dryness at the ends. I haven't had a trim in over a year and do not think I need one at all. My hair is healthy and has no split ends and usually makes it a week between washes this way.
I hope that helps someone with hair more like mine than Katherine's. I'm very jealous of the no-poo people, but that's for my dry-scalp friends.

Great vid! In February of 2022 I started picking out the dreads that had developed on my head over the really drippy cold winter and my once magnificent mane had been reduced to a very uneven bob. I'm just wanting to get my hair back to wild man length of just below my shoulders, and just about a month ago started researching. You were one of the first ones, thankfully, and then there's this guy called Blowout Professor. He had great info on the basic structure of hair, but since I had the good fortune of finding your hair oil recipe first I took in his advice on bottles of carcinogenic, endocrine disrupting sludge with a high dose of critique. He goes so far as to recommend heat on a regular basis, and then we can sell you bottles of sludge to compensate for the damage. He merely mentioned in passing that some people like boar bristle brushes, then took the rest of the time of the brush chapter of his video talking about plastic. Since I took on periodic oiling with castor oil, ditched my plastic wide tooth comb for dry finger only, and the boar bristle brush and my returning mane is coming out more shiny and not greasy, less frizzy than it was when I was 20, 10, 5 years younger. Also the growth is seeming faster what with the ends getting much better treatment than they could ever get with a plastic comb. I have yet to mix up a batch of your oil recipe and want to do that soon. Easier to afford in the near future is some clay and vinegar to finish off my chucking out of all the modern hair 'care' methods. Thanks so much for sharing these things! My beard is doing so much better also, soft, shiny and not at all frizzy.

I have extremely dry skin and hair. My doctor told me to take a bath, not a shower, once or twice a week at most. Since I'm sensitive to waaay too many chemicals, i switched to natural castile shampoo with an apple cider vinegar rinse some years ago and my hair and scalp are so much more comfortable now. I occasionally put 1/2 cup of crushed sage leaves in an old knee-high stocking and put it to soak in a gallon of hot water when I go to bed, then add it to my final ACV rinse the next day. This gives my white hairs a tinge of brown, just enough so the hairs are no longer transparent, as well as making the hair feel wonderfully soft and healthy. I grow the sage in my garden, the flowers feed the pollinators, and the leaves feed me and my hair!

I dyed my hair for many years and it most likely did damage it, especially as I also had chemo a few years ago which caused some thinning. I then decided to go grey naturally and I've had soooo many positive comments about it! It isn't very evenly grey - I always had a much lighter streak from the top of my head but as the rest is going more grey this is becoming less noticeable. My hair is in much better condition now than it's been in for years, mostly because six months ago I started to follow a lot of the advice you gave on your channel. I'm so pleased with the results!
I think grey hair suits an older face, too. I think one's skin tone alters with age, and dyed hair can look so unnatural. During the latter years of my hair dyeing, I did go quite light, not trying to retain my original natural very dark hair. It was probably easier to go grey from this lighter hue as well. I celebrated my 70th birthday at the end of last month (still not sure how I feel about that! - huge milestone somehow!) and am now definitely celebrating my natural grey hair.
I have a filter jug for drinking as I can't stand the taste of our local water. As for showering I haven't investigated filtering this, but I only wash my hair once a month now so its effect is probably minimal. I also tend to wash rather than shower on a daily basis, concentrating on those areas most needing washing, and my skin is in good condition. I am convinced that too frequent showering can dry one's skin in the same way as too much washing can be damaging to hair. We are fortunate to live in a soft water area. I try to use natural soap as much as possible. I ration the amount of direct sunlight I receive too - I like to sit for about 15 mins in direct sun on sunny days for the Vitamin D but too much can definitely cause harm to skin and hair.
I do use an apple cider vinegar rinse at the end of my hair washing routine. I now use a DIY shampoo made from pure Castile soap with a little jojoba oil mixed in, with some peppermint and rosemary essential oils. I found I couldn't get on with a clay wash but this shampoo is gentle and lovely for my hair.
My hair has grown quite a bit since I started taking better care of it and I've gradually worked out the DIY products which work best for me. It is now below tail-bone length!! Lots of new baby hair growth on top and at my hairline too! This is definitely working!

Yay, I am doing so many things right! I have never dyed my hair and I have never used heat regularly, only for a special occasions, to achieve a certain look for an event or performance, and I think the last time I used heat on my hair was 9 years ago. (I try to achieve the same things with wet setting and other historical techniques, for those special occasions.) I have no gray hairs, but I do have a few scattered individual hairs that are pure white, and they are sparkly! So I actually like them. My hair is a reddish black, all my life people have remarked on the unusual color and asked me if it was dyed. I do not plan to ever dye my hair, however if the, "Magical sparking fairy hairs," I already have start to grow more numerous, I might have difficulty adjusting because my identity as being someone with long hair in my particular reddish-black shade would have to change, and if I find that difficult to cope with, I have a plan for using henna and indigo to dye it back to my original color. I won't use chemicals to dye my hair, only plants. (Well, technically there are chemicals in plants, but you know what I mean). Friends have been annoyed at me for not helping them dye their hair, but I do not want to expose myself to those chemicals. Use henna, and I wilo help!
I fortunately live in a rural area where rainwater or well water are the only options for tab water, so I do not have to worry about chlorine in the water. I am going to suggest to my sister, who has lime in her water, that she might want to try filtering it, though. I have been trying to get her to watch your videos, her hair is similar to yours and she is having difficulty with shedding too much hair when detangling.
Too bad that I am severely allergic to onions! I wonder if there are alternatives to onion juice that also work.

I have been watching your wonderfully uplifting channel for a couple of months now and am following your principals closely as it has been my lifelong dream to have beautiful long gypsyesque hair. I am 70 years old, so what! I don't feel my age at all. I am excited to find out about all these practices and methods of dealing with hair. I have never questioned my dull shampoo and conditioner hair routine at all I'm sad to admit until now. I have just over shoulder length hair that I have dyed at the salon a rich dark brown. It's done well and looks natural. I went white at the front and salt and pepper further back. It made me feel so old and just wasn't how I felt about myself. I had auburn hair in my younger days and then hennaed it to enrich the colour as I aged. My hair was much curlier and inclined to frizz and dryness then. Now, my hair has become a bit straighter with age and I like it much better as the curl is more relaxed, fortunately it is still thick. The processes I've employed since following you are working splendidly. I always believed that my hair wasn't genetically meant to grow past my shoulders. Already I'm seeing growth. It would be nice to go back to using henna and indigo to colour my hair but alas, I'm a bit too far on in years to start growing the dye out to replace it with those natural dyes. Thank you very, very much for all the research you've done on this subject. You have made me very happy. I also bought the Gua Shah face scrapers and rollers on your recommendation. They too are lovely to use. SO EXCITING!

It is such a shame that our modern society is so youth-oriented and we have lost the sense of the dignity of old age, and the respect of the elderly who have a whole lifetime's experience behind them which helps them grow in wisdom. @@readingdestination9025 Oh, I so agree. Shortsightedness is a problem across the board in today's society, fuelled by politicians who are not interested in long-term wisdom but only in staying in power and getting elected next time around. The attitude is "throw the old people and the babies on the scrap heap because they are useless eaters." Deeply shocking...
I value so much what I learned in my youth from my mother and grandmother. Because of this I love being an old-fashhioned home-maker and I am sure it is where my love of creative art and craft came from, too - we were always encouraged to make things, and my older relatives taught me to sew, knit and crochet, and I learnt to cook too - when I was tiny I would stand on a box to reach the table, and I had my little pastry set and Mum would give me pastry to roll out to make jam tarts. We'd lick out the cake batter bowls and have fun in the kitchen! We were blessed to have a mum who was there for us and spent quality time with us. My happiest childhood memories.
We never had a TV until I was in my early 20s and I often felt deprived compared with my school friends, but I'm glad now because the quality of our family life was better and we learnt how to be entertained by much more fruitful methods. We always ate together as a family too - so important for the communication between the generations.

if you want to have historically accurate styles you are more likely to have an accurate look using heat before the twetieth century (water setting is not really possible when powder was used and we have evidence of what irons looked like for most era which is harder to find regarding pin curling and rollers) but haircare (washing, drying and styling) was done much less regularly than nowadays and heatstylin seems to have been seen as more coquettish than today. Looking clean and appropriate had more to do with having hare dressed than styled, since we don't dress our hair as much as we did, that responsability of having styled looking hair has fallen to setting the hair, using heat for most people due to the percieved convenience of heat tools

Cold showers are just not doing anything except cool you down. I do believe in vinegar rinses to seal cuticles because it makes sense to me (haven't looked into it much) but i believe minimal open cuticles are just a result of wet vs dry or alkaline vs acidic hair and anything beyond that cannot be repared only concealed.

I enjoy your videos and agree about basic hair care. I'm platinum silver because, although I only used henna (color) now I use henna for silver hair which is strictly to condition. (Colora is an excellent henna product I've been using for years!)I have a blowdryer/diffuser that I use that blows with a cool-warm and then cool settings, otherwise I just wrap it in a t-shirt til dry. Big difference! I hate hot showers😂! I use a tepid-blood warm temp; it's comforting to me! Since I've subscribed to your channel, I've gone back to using my boar bristle brush and 50-100 strokes each night with a rosemary, tea tree and peppermint oil scalp massage. In just a month, I've seen a drastic change in my hair. It's a naturally straight curl, and it shines beautifully. I agree with you that, society has dictated how a woman's hair is to be cared for to look good and to be socially acceptable. As with many things including hair grooming, it pays to stay away from trendy hair care. I've learned to accept and care for my curly straight individuality and take pride in what I've been blessed to have! Keep up the good work, Katherine. Best wishes!❤

How do you dry your hair? Mine is almost tailbone length but if I don’t use a hairdryer it will take 10 hours to dry. I don’t want to go to sleep with damp hair. I’m going to start implementing your hair are routine. Also getting a boar brush. I used to use one . Then I started hearing how it was bad for hair. I agree that all these products are making our hair in a bad state. Someone is making a lot of money off of it.

My hair takes forever to dry too. I wash/wet my hair now, once a week, on Saturday morning. I use a shower cap the rest of the week. I leave my hair down on Saturday. I don't even brush it wet, I just finger rack it a bit to look ok. Pin up the sides just a bit to keep my hair out of my face. It will take all day for my dry. I will add oil and braid my hair before bed on Saturday night and brush it out on Sunday morning with more oil.

The only heat I use is for my bangs to curl, I only have to curl them once a week usually after hair wash day and it’ll stay up and curled until next wash day. For styling I use water, salt/sea salt water the air drying, or a light amount of oil. I wash my hair in the sink, I use cold cold water on my hair and it never gets on my skin which means I never freak out.
And for fun hair, I use wigs! Pastel pink my go to now. I already got my hair dying fix (dyed my hair the whole rainbow!) and now I use henna to keep my hair red in a healthy way since henna is extremely good for your hair and very very permanent so you just have to do your roots. It’s more permanent then hair dye tbh

Depends on the plant. Not all plants are the same and some are stubborn. My natural hair color is literally sh!t color so I color it blonde, red or silver. I love silver hair because I can do the 18th century French hair care routine, which has done wonders for my hair and me. After the coloring process, I go lazy using powdered cleaning method and using bristle brushes... just be lazy until the next hair color treatment in two months later, which I use well water or the filtered water from my shower to wash out the bleach and two days later to wash out the color dye. Anyways back to my natural poo hair... I am not kidding... it is the ugliest ash gold brown you had ever seen. NO THANK YOU TO THE NATURAL COLOR POLICE. To each their own. And I have more hair than most women in my family, so my hair is as stubborn as the oyster purple green plants that thrives on concrete and sand. Lots of young gals would want to have my hair even though its natural color is caca. 🤣🤣🤣 I will agree some people go crazy with it, and I had been guilty of experimenting with my hair like they did before going back to dying silver and embracing the 18th century French method of caring my hair, which has dramatically caused it to grow from just 1 inch per month to now almost 2 inches a month.. and I even grew more hair around the front filling in the fathers hair line. Our ancestors (before 20th century) knew what they were doing and this is from someone who bleaches her hair to get the silver hair.

my hair has stayed at about the same length off and on for many years. i used to dye my hair with henna & indigo, however my natural color is very similar to yours (dark brown) and therefore didn’t have extremely drastic results. i’ve always wanted to have red/copper hair since i was a little kid and i finally decided to do it a couple years ago (first bleach, now permanent dye). i honestly haven’t noticed a huge difference in my hair health, as i have always struggled with split ends and breakage for as long as i can remember. but i’ve been wanting to try a shower filter for so long ! also trying some of your other tips that i haven’t done yet to see if i can finally get past this growth plateau !
ps. to any magical silver / grey / white haired people: genetically my family gets very little grey hairs which makes me bummed lol cuz i really hope i can have a full head of grey hair when im older ! i think its so stunning and whimsical. cheers 🤍

Meanwhile my hair is more healthier then anytime I dyed my gray hair with chemical dyes. Professional or otherwise. It doesn’t make sense to me. The only thing I can think of is the encounters of clients with fake henna, or people wanting to change their hair color frequently. Also the henna brows being offered as a service now isn’t real henna at all. These things make me crazy.

My dying hair journey is I have only died my hair once all over and once with two streaks in the front in my late teens in the late 90's.
I say if you can't get your hair colour in a bottle why die it. I cant find my colour directly in a bottle. As my strands are not an even colour. As if you colour your hair and hate colour you chose. You cant get it back with out chopping it off. If not in a bottle.
Colouring hair is fine for people who like to do that..
But lighten hair. When you die it lighter it will strip the colour out. Going from a dark colour brown (like you have in video) to blonde is silly. to much of a colour lightning. But the worst hair colour is to be is say is in the greys. As it strips out all the colour from your hair almost. This colour is for when it to naturally turns and most don't get grey at least until any time after 60 anyway.
I relay if ever use heat on my hair. As I don't think it is necessary, Uunless it takes all day to dry. But if must don't fully dry it. Will help out.
