In honor of Black History Month, I wanted to shine light on this inspiring story. This video was meant to focus on the positives that Calvin Peete brought to life and golf.
..."positives!" He took care of his Family.🫀
Calvin Peete inspired me to take up the game of golf in the '80s. The head pro at the public golf course where I played and practiced was Pete Brown. Today I am a junior golf coach thanks to these two men. Both men passed away in 2015 two days apart. Thank you for making this video.
Thank you for watching! Great comment and story, really cool to hear how Calvin Peete inspired you.
He lead the PGA Tour for 10 straight years in driving accuracy .. I dont think people know how hard that is to do ..
Trust me! I’m a golfer and it’s insanely hard!!
Especially with a busted left arm!
What a great gentleman.
It was a great opening few sentences, so true.
I would have loved to have a quiet beer with Calvin Peete.
He:would talk and I would listen.
Agreed. Would be like a warm glass of milk before bed 😌
@@anaks247 🤣🤣🤣
Calvin Peete was way ahead of his time! He was truly loved and severely missed!
Thanks so much. This was a great retrospective on Calvin Peete. I didn’t know that he won so many times in the early ‘80s.
10 straight years the most accurate driver on tour that’s an incredible statistics
Cal was one of the very best...and a super guy...RIP.
thanks so much for another great video! great content! those 80-ish% fairway hits are absolutely incredible
And didn’t pick up a club until he was 23. Incredible man
How do you become so good only starting at 23 years old that’s god given talent right there amazing
No, it's not. He practiced a lot.
A true professional. Awesome video as always!
Just took my first golf lesson. Glad to learn about Calvin Pete.
Thanks for watching and great to hear you’re picking up golf more!
I have the same injury as Calvin but have a slice and no distance. Looks like i need to study his swing , I had given up on getting better before I heard about him , this has given me hope.
As a metro-Detroit man myself, he’s one of my favorite golfers. It just goes to show how important fairways are. About 260 average drive, but he still won 12 times on tour, probably having to hit long irons and fairway woods into par fours, meaning he couldn’t go for the right pins as much but he still got it done and made birdies cuz his short game was excellent. Every time I watch him I’m mesmerized. Fairway after fairway. It seemed like he couldn’t miss even if he tried. Such an excellent player. I bet the numbers would be in the 90 percent range if he was using today’s clubs.
The last time I saw Calvin Peete play in person was a senior tour event in Cincinnati, Ohio. He didn't miss a fairway in the two days I walked with him as a spectator. He was special.
Happened to meet Calvin, was a very nice man... and boy could he split the fairway!!
I followed the Nicklaus / Peete group in the '82 US Open all 18 holes.
Calvin was a cool dude, and a "real man".
I remember starting to follow Calvin Peete rise to stardom in the late 70s via Golf World Weekly. I kept noticing his name popping up on the mini tour leaderboards. What a great story he has. Thanks for sharing about the great Calvin Peete! Great video.
Thanks for watching! That must’ve been cool to see his career blossom from the beginning.
It truly was. I followed him for a few holes at the 1981 Memorial Tournament. He wasn't long off the tee but he could thread a needle with his driver.
Nice! Yeah, I knew he was accurate, but after researching more about him, those fairways hit percentages are just absolutely insane.
@@anaks247 yes he makes Fred Funk look like a wild stray hitter off the tee 😁
Other than having the bent left arm, Calvin Peete’s swing is very similar to that of the greatest ball striker of all time, Ben Hogan. I believe that is why he was so accurate.
Completely different
He had his own unique swing unlike anyone else.
I met Calvin Peete through Lee Elder I followed them three straight in Austin, Texas I thought I hit it Straight, shit Calvin hit the Ball stupid straight OMG, it was something to see up Close Thank you Calvin Peete ❤
Hell yeah, brother. What an inspiring guy- you could tell he was genuinely nice and humble even though he was a champion
Absolutely my role model, class, class ,class. Whatva stick
Thank you...A.K.A. MR. ACCURACY ETERNAL!
Always loved watching Calvin Pete on the PGA tour. Thank you for honoring him. Could you consider doing something about my favorite black golfer named Jim Dent.
Absolutely, I appreciate you for watching! Also, thank you for your input. I can definitely look into Jim Dent’s story more and possibly create a video for him in the future.
Saw both Dent and Peete play at the Masters
Great Video
This is one of the greatest and most inspiring and respectful videos I've ever watched...G'day from Tasmania ,Australia..
Really appreciate that! I definitely tried my best to pay proper respect... Have a good one from Louisiana, USA
Thank you for sharing this. Amazing content and history! He was special and his story is truly motivating.
Outstanding thanks
A Simply Wonderful & Inspirational Presentation, Thank you!
Thanks for this 🙏🏽
Thanks for pulling this together.
Great video. One of my favorite golfers for sure
My dad really likes Calvin. What an amazing golfer & character!
Thanks for the content
Honestly not sure why you don’t get more views. I love your content, especially your golf videos. Please don’t stop making gold!
Thanks for watching! Hopefully, the algorithms pick up eventually. But until then, I’ll keep trying to make the content the best it can be!
@@anaks247 also huge shoutout to spotlighting Black golfers. There’s not enough of this. It’s much appreciated!!
@@djhalfandhalf8538 Absolutely! It’s my pleasure, and I hope to do more down the road.
Great Job.
Definitely a ton more character too!!!
Nice video, thank you
Very nicely done.
Don't forget to mention, that he had only one, ONE OB in 1200 rounds of golf. Insane!
interesting the world golf rankings started in 1986. If they had started 3 or 4 years earlier he would almost certainly been a world number 1.
Awesome
He really remains THE BEST black player. Tiger had a privileged upbringing and never faced the adversity tyoical of black life in America. Calvin was a true gem.
AWESOME job, well done. Thank you for bringing this amazing truth to our attention and knowledge.
So he started at 2 or 3 like Tiger did. No wonder he was good. Oh, 23??? 😱Wth?!
Yep pretty wild indeed! 😄
Him and Jim Thorpe before Tiger
Jim Thorpe was a good player but he doesn’t have the same accomplishments as Calvin Peete
Only one ball hit OB in his career 12:22
Imagine if Cal Peete would’ve started young and had coaching and not broken his arm
Pretty much the only black golfer before Tiger? African Americans not even allowed into a lot of US clubs until recently? No official ban in UK but very few black golfers here either.
There was a few more. I mentioned Charlie Sifford, Pete Brown, and Lee Elder in the video. They were the most known pioneers. Some others to mention include Ted Rhodes, Bill Spiller, Jim Thorpe, Adrian Stills, Charles Owens, and Jim Dent. There also are many more who whose stories are relatively untold. It wasn’t until 1961 when Charlie Sifford was allowed to earn a PGA Tour card, and soon thereafter, the civil rights act was also passed. Slowly, from there, clubs changed their rules too. I partly hoped that this video would inspire more people in general to pick up the game. As said, Calvin Peete had every reason not to succeed, but succeeded anyway.
I feel like too many people feel sorry for the people that had obstacles in the past but I notice the people that actually endure the road blocks were just focused no matter what was in their way be it physical handicap, racism, or "how bad things may seem". Seems as if the younger generation of blacks are more sensitive to historical facts than the ones who succeed despite.
What happened to rickie?
👀
Great, and tanks for the memories Calvin bro
