- Hey all, been planning this one for awhile. I have been vocal about not liking certain word mark jerseys, though there are some I like a lot.

I seriously cannot believe the jersey jersey made it through all stages of development and no one thought how ridiculous it was
That's why it's good
The Jersey jersey has a bit of a retro feel with the stripes and the font used. I guess they wanted it to be as basic as it could. lol
I like it quite a bit tbh 🤷🏼♂️
I mean, the ad reads itself. New Jersey's new Jersey jersey was all the talk when it came out. Almost eclipsed the "that's just the black Blackhawks jersey with a wordmark"
They knew.
The Islanders one is an abomination
I don't think this comment can be liked enough.
"he ain't lyin!"
Yes it is and i goddamn love it
Looks like the Knicks
Netherland colors to represent the colonized “founders”
3:23 Fun fact: when the Rangers account made that tweet, the Canes account responded by calling them the "inventors of diagonal."
Then they signed as many Rangers as possible to complete their obsession
Inventors of diagonal? Was that supposed to be a "burn" of some kind? Because if it was, it failed miserably. Canes obviously copied the Rangers jersey. That'd be like if the Rangers came up with a fire flame "R" jersey and Calgary called us out on it, and we replied "You invented fire bro? Durrrrr" lol. Ridiculous retort.
I loved the "New York" word mark that the Sabres wore when they played the Rangers at Madison Square Garden for the first time after the 9/11 attacks. Was one of a kind, and was a special game.
very interesting piece of history i didnt know about, i did some researh and they were red, white, silver and black right? did they use them in game or was it just a pre game honorary thing?
@@thebandboy those were the goat head jerseys, but just replaced the logo with the word mark. They wore those for the entire game, but only that one game.
wow, I remember that game very clearly!
Rangers fan and I agree great jersey for the sabres!
The Rangers wore "New York" word mark jersey in the 1980s.
The Blues had a word mark jersey in mid 80's - with BLUES above the blue note
The white Canes jersey really surprised me. It might be my favourite of their catalogue now.
Teams that use a nickname for their nickname is just oh so stupid.
The white Canes jersey is so plain
There's also the Seals one from the 70's. Sharks should be doing a reverse retro with that this season
I believe you missed the sabres butter knives jerseys with "Buffalo" in the bottom stripe (goat head era and reverse retro) they also had a rangers style jersey for a 9/11 tribute game, as well as the Kings jerseys 1998-2013 with "Los Angeles" in the bottom stripe, and their 2020 stadium series jersey
I love Pittsburgh's 3rd jersey, I think it was a retro one. Looks so clean
I wish they'd use their late 90's jersey as a 3rd.
Buffalo also had a wordmark jersey back in 2001 when they played against the Rangers after 9/11. It was just their white goat head uniform but with New York logo similar to the Rangers logo.
Hot take, I really like the Robo Penguin logo. Maybe it's a result of growing up in that era.
Me too, I always wanted the Pens to bring back those jerseys, just eliminate the weird gradient stripe on the black one
It's a very sharp jersey.
The Blues did have a jersey that had Blues over the top of the blue note. 1985 time frame.
Most of these wordmarks don't look good, but there are a few decent ones. The Minnesota one is one of my favourites.
Don't know about best but my vote for the worst is the NJ Devils Jersey jersey.
Are you talking about the New Jersey new ‘Jersey’ jersey?
Ngl I unironically love the jersey jersey
@@evann-t2915 Yeah and Shannon's sigh sums up that New Jersey new Jersey jersey perfectly.
@@adamrbrewer1660 I love 70's station wagons with woodgrain panels, ugly is good to sometimes.
@@evann-t2915 dude, that is soooooooo jersey
I really liked the Red Caps jersey, and I completely agree with you 💯% on the Canes jersey. I just love red and white together.
I think both Rangers, blue and white jerseys are the best of the wordmark jerseys. I also like the Hurricanes away, Pittsburgh 90s away and current alternate, and Tampa Bay 2022 Stadium Series wordmarks.
You should have also shown the Predators 2022 Stadium Series jersey since that's is a wordmark as well, Smashville, but a wordmark all the same.
The blue Atlanta one is lit fire. Ik a lot of ppl hate it but damn they went out of the box as a new team new thing and I loved it. It's also a men's league dream jersey
The Minnesota Wild also had their Winter Classic jersey from this last season, with the MPLS. St. Paul wrapped around the state of Minnesota
With regard to the Colorado wordmark jerseys, the all-burgundy jersey was awesome (for a wordmark) because it really accentuated the primary color of the team. It is the only Avalanche jersey I own, and I wish it had been the one you showed. The blue one that followed was a monstrosity, in my opinion. In general, I'm not a big fan of wordmarks, but the burgundy (with just a bit of blue and black for accents) was nice.
AGREED!!!
I wish Tampa would take the blue Bolts jersey and put the logo on the front. The colors and striping are maybe their best. Even has black and silver.
I still have an away blue "NEW YORK" Rangers jersey from my childhood. It hangs on a blanket ladder I made for my daughter out of broken hockey sticks. She uses it as a jersey ladder. It's mostly Hurricanes jerseys but has that one Rangers jersey and my USA jersey I wore as a player on team USA. (See for you younger fans, the home jersey used to be white and the away was the darker jersey in the NHL) In 1955, the league mandated that teams wear colors at home and white on the road. That arrangement was reversed in 1970, when teams began wearing white at home. And then it was reversed again in 2003, when teams went back to wearing colors at home. The Rangers will always have the Iconic word mark jersey but as a Canes fan I do not mind that jersey.
Shannon, I know you have the old Seals jersey in your collection. I always loved that one, not matter what color it came in. I was especially fond of the 'pacific blue and gold' ones they wore the last couple of years in Oakland.
1:57 bruins had a yellow wordmark jersey in 1940-1944.
In the "college hockey look", there was also the burgundy Thrashers alternate. I know it looks more like a motocross shirt than a hockey jersey, but I remember thinking they were hella sharp back when it first came out.
Rangers is the best but canes away jersey is my second favorite word mark by a mile. My favorite part is the warning flag in the C. Such a clean design👌🏼
Love the Minnesota Wild 3rd jersey script!! It really would look good in white!
Off-white or we riot
I love the powder blue Pittsburgh word mark. I wish they had done a white one as an homage to the Penguins first season. Having said that, I thought the 'Jersey' jersey and the Bolts, Jets and Dallas were as weak as they come. As a rule I kind of like wordmark jersey's if their done right.
I just hope Pittsburgh does a throwback to that blue wordmark before the contact with Adidas expires. Wanna have the full color pallette collection of black, white, and blue, all in Adidas
The blue bolts jersey was my first and will always have a special place in my heart
Colorado had a sweet maroon based sweater back around 2000. I have a Forsberg version, one of my favorites.
I heard from some friends who thought the Flames wordmark jersey was like the jerseys that were sold at Canadian Tire or Target back when they were around.
There was a time when St. Louis had BLUES above the musical note in the mid-1980's. Wasn't a big fan of it. I think it said ST. LOUIS on the note back then too.
If you’re going to include the Screaming Eagle you gotta include the Buffalo Butter Knives jerseys and the Kings’ jerseys from the 2000’s decade
Also in the same vein as the Buffalo half and half abomination, the Nashville mustard jersey says ‘Nashville’ under the neck.
Also the Sharks and the Knights are going to have a wordmark on their Reverse Retros!
The way you're lit in this video, it looks like you're doing it in front of a green screen. Wild.
I would bet with the noise around Philly, and seeing the Eagles NFL team moving towards a new font and wordmark, I could see the Flyers do something stupid.
As a Flyers fan it hurts me to say nice things about the Rangers, but that wordmark is absolutely classic. I prefer the Lady Liberty since I was a fan of Richter (when he wasn't beating the Flyers) But that Rangers is just classic.
Aren't the Eagles going back to the Kelly Green jerseys? (As I call them the Randall Cunningham jerseys)
@@daved1535 they have a 3rd jersey or whatever coming for that eventually. NFL rules used to say you couldn't change helmets. But I guess that changed, so they can sneak it in next year.
The 2006-14 home and away jerseys of the Ducks were very uninspiring to say the least. Thank the hockey gods that they changed them!
As a sabres fan I always thought a cool reverse retro would be our buffalo script one in black with the goathead under it instead of the classic logo
I liked Minnesota's jersey the most. Only issue i have with it, is that red color don't go well with green.
The Rangers should have copy written that style so no one else could have used it. The script style sometimes works, definitely for The Hockey Guy, and just a few others. Not a fan of the shortened names… Canes, Preds, Sens, and especially Bolts, since they aren’t the bolts, they are the Lightning. Love the St. Pat’s for the history, but not with Toronto with it. Impressed but a little concerned of the number of word marks in The Hockey Guy’s collection. 😏
That Red Wings 75th anniversary jersey is killer, my first memories of the Wings they were wearing those
It's not from the NHL, but my favourite jersey is an old Halifax Mooseheads 3rd from when I was at Dalhousie, white with the cursive Halifax wordmark and the Moosehead on the sleeve. It's what I usually wear to games as a neutral fan and always seems to start conversations.
I knew I didn't like wordmark jerseys but this video really brought it home. Rangers and St Pats are the only ones I enjoyed. Guess it is good that I am a Habs fan lol. I mean ones with logos are varying but that's just because of the logo lol.
You could do a video on NHL vs European Jerseys as 2 of the 3 Bracknell Bees Jerseys i sent you have ads on them. This is with Ads appearing on NHL jerseys from this season. Honestly if the Ads/Sponsors are done right they can be decent. I say this as a fan from the UK. Keep it up bud
I really enjoy that atlanta jersey. Would be cool to see more asymmetric features on jerseys, it always looks cool
Lol the sigh on Jersey
Also, I met a guy who actually defended that Islanders jersey. He said it was cool. A grown, adult man.
I know a lot of other flames fans that hate that jersey. But I love it, I particularly like the secondary logos on the shoulders. I think they should bring them back every now and then. Or put it on hats.
Edit: Also now that I have gotten to the Rangers part of the video. I have to say its my least favourite jersey on this list. Its just boring af, the Pittsburg one is a close second, then New Jersey
Pittsburgh took yours and made it iconic.
@@christiankatic5408 yea right, that j is only popular in western PA and only kept it around for what? Four, five years maybe? Then dumped that for the robo-penguin and then the team almost left. Nothing about that screams iconic to me.
We did do it first and better than any team on this list. Go Rangers
When you said the "Nashville Predators" jersey was not as bad as what was coming up, I was expecting their "SMASH VILLE" jersey from earlier this year!
Smashville is as dumb as it comes
It's a marketplace slogan they have been promoting for years.
Did anyone else think it was the 'Nighty Ducks' before zooming in?
If Winnipeg did a Reverse Retro to the Atlanta sleeve word mark jersey, just had “Winnipeg” instead, HUGE win!
Seattle is unlikely to put a wordmark on their current jersey in my view. The only way they would do so is if they do a reverse retro with the Metropolitans logo & colors
I remember an old guy who went to Caps games in the 80s who wore a hat that said Old Fart on it. Does that count?
Btw, this video got a like once I saw the Aretnas jersey. It sounds like a team of eye doctors.
Too bad the Maroons didn't have a jersey that you could include in this video. Go Ms! Btw, where is the Hooley Smith video? Maybe the old man with the hat saw them play at one time.
I like the Rangers jerseys and the Seals. After those two the other teams all have much better options.
the subtle comedy is priceless
I was not a fan of the Mighty Ducks redesigned jersey, but it just caught my eyes today and I changed my mind. I’d like to see it worn in a game.
I love The Hockey Guy word mark jersey!
The original capitals jersey is my favorite of the word marks
what about the "Boston Bruins" one with the little bear on it? i could see you considering it more of a "logo" but in my opinion its kind of a wordmark.
I’ll have to go with the Rangers as my favorite and Pittsburgh has too many letters. There are a few that are quite ugly as well my second favorite would be the Jets
when i was a kid just starting hockey in the late 80s-early 90s, i thought that teams used word mark jerseys because they found no one able to come up with a good logo...then i learned that they already have a logo and i was just: .........then why?? its not baseball its hockey! ^^
The red wings winter classic against toronto from the big house has a detroit wordmark above the winged wheel and it works imo
It's really hard to come up with a good Detroit concept, especially for a Winter Classic where the regular jersey is already so iconic, but they really hit it out of the park with that one, I agree
I liked the rangers heritage jersey with New York in red diagonal on navy blue jersey.I hope we get the white liberty jerseys for the retro jerseys this year
I like the Bolts one, its a good changeup. Now they've gone through all the colors, at least.
Gotta do silver, now!
Mid 70s Rangers Had That Toronto Look Logo
cool freeze frame action with the Anaheim jersey. feels like Pokemon. you should do that for every jersey on purpose
I mean the upside with wordmarks is that you don't have to worry the logo potentially wrinkling up. Otherwise imo, there better a good reason for it or it better have a cool looking font
I didn't like the Colorado one when it released, but the burgundy one grew on me
I hate all jerseys with word marks except the Rangers. Word marks belong to baseball and basketball that's it. Hockey jerseys should only have the teams emblem on it
I tend to agree. There's been a few decent ones but in general the Rangers is the only one I like
Love this guy and his videos . In fact most of the NHL online guys are pretty good .. the Hockey Guy is the gold standard for Hockey however
St. Louis also had awful jerseys in the 80's with "BLUES" arched over a tiny blue note. It's truly awful.
Agreed. That was the beginning of a sad period when red made it onto the logo and the jerseys. Hated it. The red retro jerseys they had a couple of years ago are far and away the worst jerseys they ever wore, IMO!
Nashville Predz fan here ... that winter classic was such a disappointment because I wanted a new jersey ... I almost picked up the Dallas Starts Winter classic.
NOW ... you also skipped the SMASHVILLE one ... it's a WORD MARK ... ... and it also sucked.
I really want a non-yellow & non-white good looking Nashville Jersey I can pick up this year.
I know you don't typically talk about rumors, but it seems like those VEGAS wordmark jerseys are gonna be the new Reverse Retro 2.0 jersey for Vegas. The same guy who leaked the new Sharks jersey (right before Teal Town USA put them out for retail) leaked the Reverse Retros in the same leak.
Not a big fan of word mark jerseys but some are ok. The Jersey jersey, Islanders, Dallas and the ones with the shortened or nicknames like “Canes”, Bolts…are just terrible. So far 2 reverse retros will be word marks and i’m ok with Vegas but Chicago’s will probably not sell very well.
Hot take: all word jerseys not from the rangers is terrible (see flames 'calgary' jerseys)
Rangers Definitely The Best
I know it wasn't very well liked but I really liked Calgary's from a few seasons ago. I am a Sens fan and people seemed to love the "Sens" jersey, I hated it. Rangers have the best one, a bonafide classic. Not sure why everyone loves the "Canes" jersey, It's a clean jersey but I just can't get behind abbreviated word marks. I like some of Dallas' word marks jerseys over the years too
Edit: also, the Smashville jerseys make me want to slam my head in a door until I can't read anymore
Bolts bit made me laugh
Has anyone else noticed lately a lot of video freezing issues with THG's vids? Thought it was my computer or youtube but it's only his videos and when I back up it freezes in the same spots. Like 11:22
Haven't check in others. But definitely happening here. 6:23 is another example, repeatable too.
Leave word marks to the MLB, logos only unless you're the Rangers because it's been almost 100 years at this point.
You missed the Blue Jackets! I understand the word mark is in the Cannon Third. However, with that being said the #CBJ really need a word mark jersey!!
The flames are incredibly underrated
Toronto and the NY islanders.
Bolts vs. Pittsburgh would be the wordmark rematch of the 2016 Eastern Conference Final...
The Hockey Guy jersey ranks middling to very good.
Hey! Don't bash that Stars jersey! That's my first jersey, and jersey they were wearing when I started watching. :P
As a Rangers fan, there was only one winner.
The ones that I dislike the most are the ones with the shortened name such as "Sens" and "Bolts" they are not your names...
The diagonal Canes is just as bad.
@@fantasticvoyage262 Ah yes I had forgotten about them
Chicago 1930s is technically outside The Warrior Logo
Can you do all of your IIHF jerseys PLEASE!
First time seeing the Jet on the wordmark jersey. lol still don't like it but nice touch.
I hate the "nick name" jerseys that were a thing for a bit. The "Canes", "Bolts", "Sens", etc. It just looks and sounds dumb to me. It doesn't help that most are ugly too.
What about the 2 awful stadium series jerseys with 'LA' and 'SMASHVILLE' on?
Pittsburgh was always my favorite
Was wondering if you are gonna talk about the really ugly RBC logo they added on the Habs jersey and other ads coming.
The New York Rangers are the ORIGINALS and still look the best, especally the White world mark jerseys.
2nd goes to Anaheim "Mighty" Ducks word mark jersey from 2005-2006.
3rd goes to Pittsburgh Penguins''s word mark jersey from the 90's.
4th goes to Colorado Avalanche's blue word mark jersey.
Uggliest goes to Dallas Stars word mark jersey
2nd ugglest goes to Detroit Red Wings's word mark jersey.
The Nasville & Jersey jerseys I'm not sure was ever real worn game jerseys for full season'
You missed the Seals and Thrashers 3rd jerseys.
Nobody cares but I have an AHL Hershey Bears t-shirt that says “B E A R S” diagonally and it is awesome because the chocolate brown is so sweet you can almost eat the shirt. Also I’ve never seen a Hershey Bears game, ever.
The Jersey jersey is actually clever. If you are not from the New York/ New Jersey Metro area you don't get it. As a New Yorker We always called New Jersey "Jersey" . You would say something like, "I can smell Jersey from here". Or if you ask someone from New Jersey where they were from they would say, "Jersey". Now living in North Carolina where everyone from up north has moved to, You still here people from New Jersey refer to it as "Jersey". The jersey actually sells to people who don't even like hockey. You see pro Basketball, Baseball, Football players from NJ wearing the Jersey jersey all the time. Rap stars and actors as well. It has become a home town jersey to people from Jersey.
What about the old purple/black/silver Kings jerseys with “Los Angeles” on the bottom jersey stripe? I will admit while I prefer that color scheme the addition of the word mark on the bottom makes it look too busy.
Wait. What?? You got Michael Bubl'es jersey? I think you mentioned before I just forgot 😁
In general, I don't like word mark jerseys. I find them very lazy from a design point of view. Which is why hockey jerseys tend to look better then jerseys from other sport leagues (i.e. NFL, NBA, etc..).
This is the best post I have read all night. And you couldn't be anymore correct.
Tampa Bay looks like somebody has misspelled VOLTS. LOL
