    There is nothing I miss more than the Yankees and Phil Rizzuto, it makes me realize how old I am, but I'd leave it again in a minute

    Phil Rizzuto is the reason why I’m a Yankee fan today. I grew up watching and listening to his broadcasts as a kid.

      I grew up being forced to watch him here in Southern New England because of WPIX-11 but I knew at an early age the difference between good and bad announcing and so glad I never choose to be a Yankee fan.

      You can tell he really loved baseball. My grandma wouldn't watch a game unless he was announcing. When I broke the news to her when he retired, it was like a family member died. She told me she learned English listening to him.

    Bill White, Frank Messer, Phil Rizzuto on Channel 11 in New York in the 1980's when I was a kid. Sometimes the Scooter would leave the game early to beat the traffic on the GWB.

    That 76 Chambliss call is burned in my memory, I preferred watching WPIX coverage of the playoffs, a significant moment in Yankee history.

    Love that man. When I would watch Yankees games and he was the announcer.... I felt like I was watching the game with my grandpa!
    Such a genuine man! Salt of the earth!
    I loved his relationship with Tom Seaver.
    I miss them both. Great great New York baseball legends!

      Posting at 5pm et on 3-30-23. The Yankees shut out the Giants to open the season about an hour ago. Whenever the Yankees win, their current announcer John Sterling, crows, "THE YANKEES WIN," making sure to emphasize each word. Hope the Yanks at least reach the World Series this year. Many knowledgeable people are predicting it.

    My Dad Bill and his brother Frank, played sandlot ball with Phil, when they were teenagers. The park, Farmers Oval, in Glendale, NY, is still there, folks.

      Ironically, your relatives' names are the same as two of Rizzuto's broadcast partners: Bill (White) and Frank (Messer).

      @@torrjpct9492 Glendale is gentrifying, now. Many of the old businesses and restaurants are now gone. Lots of the old folks are still here, though. My Dad and Uncle did have the first names of great Yankee announcers, that much is true.

    honorable mentions to "thats gone, mr. october just hit one 9 miles" after reggie hit an upper deck shot in the 81 playoffs, and "thats where that big butt pays off" after cecil fielder homered, presumably he meant to say bat, butt was distracted by the size of something rounding the bases. i'd wager it was nearly 200 times he said "what a play by nettles!"

    The scooter an all time baseball classic an icon of the game !! Holy cow is right Phil !!! RIP your Legend Sir !! The voice of the NY Yankees !!! The best was watching Donny Baseball running the bases after he hit his 9th home run in 9 straight games !! I remember watching that game !! Mattingly was my hero as a kid !! Another Yankee Legend!! What a great video

    I had a Phil Rizzuto key chain. It fell into a hole and got covered with asphalt. Now every time a car drives over the patch you can hear it say, "Holy Cow."

      He wasn't joking though. The Yankees used to use him as a special instructor during spring training. He really did get mad when they screwed up a bunt. He was one of the best bunters in baseball.

    Holy Cow! I still remember the Big 3, Rizzuto, Allen, and Barber, announcing games when I was a kid growing up in Astoria. Three totally different personalities...Phil, the Scooter; Mel the Attorney (yes, he graduated from U. of Alabama School of Law), and Red, the Old Philosopher. Mel and Red were from the Deep South and Phil was from Brooklyn.

      Also during the late 1950s and early 1960s, Allen and Rizzuto would work the broadcast alone during away games that were televised because Barber worked only home games. The two would switch between radio and TV, and as a result would not be on together at any point.

      It was "It's Sports Time with Phil Rizzuto," but he didn't broadcast until later in the 1950s.

      Actually, that was Jerry Coleman on WPIX TV for the call of Mantle's 500th. Either Rizzuto or Joe Garagiolla did it on radio, but I don't know.

Joe's call of Mickey's homer was on a record given away at a twi-nignt doubleheader a few months later in August '67, the second game lasting 20 innings. "Holy Cow" LOL
