Lesson Twelve | The Problem with Progressivism

  • Starting in the late 19th century a new ideology arose claiming that human nature had overcome the problem of faction thanks to the knowledge of science. Because of this, we no longer needed the antiquated features of the Constitution, like separation of powers, that made government slow and inefficient. This new ideology, known as Progressivism, gave rise to the rule of the bureaucracy that characterizes our government today.
Discover the simple but profound truths of the Constitution in an entirely new way through Hillsdale College’s “Introduction to the Constitution.” Find yourself at the table with Dr. Larry Arnn, as he teaches his students the principles of liberty. Experience the lively discussions that take place as students explore the implications and beauty of our Constitution. To support Hillsdale free online courses, visit: secured.hillsd...

If you merely intend to pass through medical school before entering politics, you are wasting your time, your money and your health. And you will be taking a place of someone who is dedicated to his profession. You may become a great politician, but you won’t be much of a physician.

I do believe truth, right and wrong do not change with the times. As was said, if it was true then, it is true now. False then, false now. What seems to actually change is not truth, but perceptions, opinions and personal whims. If we are led by any of those three things and develop our concepts of truth and government from them we are going to have some very Shakey foundations indeed.

Looking back and living in these times I see how important it is for our young people be given the opportunity to be educated in an unbiased and unedited school system. I never saw this terrible transition coming. Now as I look back, I can see the major changes in our political, educational and environmental systems with major concern. Human rights, equality and freedom of speech are being restructured in a way I never thought possible. What does one do to try to make things right?

Progressivism sounds amazing. It's in practice where it's fatal flaw reveals itself: it's inability to rectify the constancy of man. If man's nature doesn't change, if he's an imperfect creature, then there will always be some flaws in any human society. The best any society can hope for is to know what evils are to be tolerated, and trade upward best it can in order to foster excellence.

Sandra R. Focseneau that isn’t necessarily true though. The stories of the tyrannical mother are very interesting if you have a chance to listen to Dr. Jordan Peterson describe them. Also, in Macbeth it is the wife that constantly pushes for power. Women simply tend to wield power in another way. Men use brute force whereas women use seduction and manipulation. Women are also much more likely to shame other women into conformity. Women seek control as well they simply use other methods.

From Calvin Coolidge's speech, given on the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
About the Declaration there is a finality that is exceedingly restful. It is often asserted that the world has made a great deal of progress since 1776, that we have had new thoughts and new experiences which have given us a great advance over the people of that day, and that we may therefore very well discard their conclusions for something more modern. But that reasoning can not be applied to this great charter. If all men are created equal, that is final. If they are endowed with inalienable rights, that is final. If governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed, that is final. No advance, no progress can be made beyond these propositions. If anyone wishes to deny their truth or their soundness, the only direction in which he can proceed historically is not forward, but backward toward the time when there was no equality, no rights of the individual, no rule of the people. Those who wish to proceed in that direction can not lay claim to progress. They are reactionary. Their ideas are not more modern, but more ancient, than those of the Revolutionary fathers.

Inalienable means cannot be taken away or given away, even by the possessor.
Progressivism is admirable and noble, but it becomes unlawful when it resorts to theft to achieve its ends. Therefore, any progressivism which relies on taxation is unlawful. The singular legitimate purpose of government is to secure our inalienable rights. Everything else falls to the private sector.
Moreover, the authority to take on debts and tax income as a means to support progressivism are completely unlawful because they represent authorities which no sovereign individual has the legal right to do to another. If it’s not legitimate then it cannot be delegated, and must be considered unlawful.
Something else to remember is that authority is delegated. It is not surrendered or abdicated. As such, there is nothing delegated to government which we ourselves do not also have the right to do. If the government claims a right which we do not also have then the claim is illegitimate.

Interesting observation, that people will change in appearance in 100 years. But people have already changed outwardly! The founders and their wives were much smaller than we are. Visit the hall of First Ladies inauguration gowns in the Smithsonian in Washington. I was amazed as a child to see how small the first ladies were. The tallest founder, Thomas Jefferson, was 6'2". It was remarked on, and remarkable. Lincoln was 6'4". Such height is no longer remarkable, though it is tall. Normally tall. Also better nutrition has led to healthier, better built people. But they are talking about human nature, which is unchanging.

    • @ScottRossProductions
      @ScottRossProductions Před 2 lety

People today are a bit taller but not by a significant amount and they are no way healthier. 4% of the world population is over 6 foot 2. 1% is over 6 four. More than 70% of Americans are overweight. Over 40% are obese. Chances are good that you are one of them. People on average were in much better shape and had much better nutrition in the past than the poison that people eat today. 100 years from now humans will be slugs withering on the ground with a computer screen implanted in their face where their eyes used to be.

There is no progressive epistemology to provide evidence that they know what the greater good is, and no evidence that they know how to achieve this greater good even if given all power to accomplish it. ... Progressive ideology ignores the greatest lesson of history: the means creates the ends.

the real problem with progressivism is that it is in fact regressive, not progressive.

Einstein pointed out that "religion without science is lame, science without religion is dangerous."
The history behind the Declaration of Independence, which this moderator hints is obsolete (it's not) was 1700 years of ruthless warfare by so-called "royalty" who professed to be God's chosen rulers on earth. But, did they actually fulfill Christ's definition of leadership?
" He who would be your leader must be your servant. He who would be your king must be your slave just as the Son of Man has come not to be served, but to serve....." ~ Christ
I find these so-called lectures by Hillsdale College are designed to promote sly subtle misinformation. The college's hidden agenda is imo to talk young people out of knowing their own God-given inalienable rights under our Constitution.
History shows that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. But, the federalist agenda taken to its intentional end would restore the power of oligarchy by undermining govt based on consent of the governed.

I agree, the truth remains true. THe declaration of iNdependence says "god given rights of life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. .. written by Thomas Jefferson, who had 180 slaves. OUr rulers were liars and hypocrites then, and are now. HE also said "all men are created equal"- the constitution stated that blacks had 3/5 vote of a white man. equality?
Next, I am about to challenge the world’s most esteemed documents, ones which have escaped a true test of scrutiny as to their righteousness; two which have, in my opinion, an undeserved reputation of being worthwhile and deserving the following of and obedience to them by the masses. It says in that particular document that certain “truths” are self-evident. Bullshit. That “obvious” statement is one from which I differ. No god made me, my mother gave birth to me nine months after having sex with my earthly father, which was his contribution to my “creation.” At birth, all people are equal, not in ability or condition, but in possession of fundamental rights.
These rights include, I will proclaim: life, liberty, and freedom from exploitation, deception, oppression, and subversion. The definition of a right is: 1Something to which one has a just claim 2 A power or privilege to which one is justly entitled 3 A power, privilege, or condition of existence to which one has a natural claim of enjoyment of. It is not given to us, it is an innate entitlement, as human beings.
Government is a form of public control used to promote human well- being. The truth is that it addresses the symptoms of the sickness, or the straying away from healthy existence. Government has been instituted to “care” for the people, and to protect us. That is why Washington was called “father” of the nation, as undeserved as that title was. I propose that instead of government or “gods” to “care” for us, that we promote independence and correct the behavior of the citizens.
Later in this book, I will include a blueprint for an ideal civilization. The “parenting” of the planet’s nations has transformed into mass deception, subversion, oppression, exploitation, and corruption of the “children.” It is time for us all to grow up to independent maturity, without need for this type of “care.”
Regarding the pursuit of happiness. To me, that is equated with a purposeful life working towards the benefit of human beings, in opposition to the widely perceived concept that the pursuit of happiness is best defined as the pursuit of money and/or possessions. I am content to be at all times helping others, to benefit mankind. In reality, for those who pursue money, their possessions in truth possess them, these possessions are so valued that the owners are in a sense enslaved to them. They serve the possessions to such an extent as to destroy a human beings life who wants a piece of their wealth. Rich people wheel and deal to the day they die. Billionaires and trillionaires never cease accumulating more, their fortunes are never enough. Have they achieved happiness? Yet, in the United States, leaders insist that the mere evidence of their wealth is “proof” of their intelligence, as if the two are related. It appears that they have concluded that all truly intelligent people desire riches. Is it that happiness loves company, or is it misery that loves company? Or, better worded, is it righteousness loves to influence, or evil loves to corrupt? The answer is… . all of the above.
