      It's not, though. Time doesn't end when you stop pushing buttons; it ends when the game revokes your ability to submit inputs. GDQ makes exceptions for TASBot because, well, he's not a legitimate speed-runner. Or a person. Or capable of playing games without someone telling him exactly what to do and when to do it. Still, that statement about inputs annoys me because it ONLY applies to TASBot. Can you imagine how many RTA runs would have been several seconds shorter if time ended when the runner just dropped his or her controller?

    • @ferociousfeind8538
      @ferociousfeind8538 Před 3 lety

      @@thatfield977 TAS and "real" speed runs are created and timed differently. A real time player would never be able to put the controller down and call time before the game says so, but TAS runs on completely different rules. Normal players typically start time on receiving control over the player character, and call time on revocation, yeah. TAS starts time on turning on the console, and calls time on the end of the frame of the last actual input- which may be frames, seconds, or minutes away from when real players get to call time. TAS standards shouldn't be applied to real players, and real rules aren't really meant for TAS either.

      I would be crazy sad if something truly terrible happened to TASBot himself like a broken neck. He can be rebuilt, we can make him stronger, but it would still be traumatizing. I did have multiple replay devices for the SNES runs, I used micro500's amazing TASLink board for both runs but I also brought a PSoC5 based replay device designed by total. I had multiple visualization boards made by micro500. We had multiple Gamecube setups. I only have one of micro500's N64 replay devices unfortunately but it worked OK thankfully. I brought multiple laptops and we had multiple copies of most games. We tried to install Hyper Princess Pitch on multiple systems but it only worked on a backup laptop where we had done our initial testing and when it failed we didn't have a lot of confidence in Hourglass behaving quickly.
      All that to say I have a lot different setup than I did at AGDQ 2014. :)

    So from what I know about these Tasbots is that it works by playing the game on a normal console. But the moves have all been pre programmed via tasbot. So we're not watching a video of the run. But we're watching the game being played in live time. Via a set of moves that have already been planned out.
    So what confuses me is how you manage to do things like get 2 critical hits in a row and leave yourself with 1 hp.
    As I could play pokemon on an emulator I can use save states and just keep reloading again and again until I get a critical.
    But Pokemon is set up in a way where that is random.
    So if getting a critical hit is random how do you make it a part of your run to garuntee a critical hit??
    Or is the game set up in a way that makes you think it's random but is essentially just hitting A on the correct frame?

    • @nighttyger3397
      @nighttyger3397 Před 5 lety +7

      Yeah, that last one, basically. Nothing in a video game is truly “random”, especially in the case of older games - generally, they’ll read some other variable in the game, such as what frame an input was made in, to determine a “random” outcome. A TAS programmer simply knows the numbers and formulae which the game uses to determine randomness and ensures plans their actions to ensure the randomness is always calculated how they want. It’s a lot like how that same run used seemingly random actions, like jumping off a ledge, to change memory.
      If you want a run that would maybe make the concept more clear, there was a run of a Fire Emblem game in a fairly recent GDQ - either Binding or Blazing Blade, can’t remember which - where the runner was doing randomness manipulation in real time!

      Which run in particular do you think would benefit from a more thorough breakdown? One thing I've been considering doing is a longer form presentation of some games where I discover how a TAS was done by playing it back with TAS tools so I can pause and rewind at certain points where glitches happen and compare what is going on to the author's notes and the game resources. There are some games that are so advanced where this would have to be a multipart series just to get through a single TAS but it could allow me to combine the discovery phase and the commentary phase as I work with my audience to unravel how something works.

    • @Seth4All
      @Seth4All Před 5 lety +6

      @@dwangoAC My comment was particularly directed at the Super Mario 64 section. 4 minutes is not even enough to explain what a parallel universe is, let alone how to exploit them over an entire playthrough. I've watched a fair bit of CZcams content related to the mechanics of the game and how to exploit it to insane degrees and even I was lost (though I'm by no means an expert). The discussion in the video was basically just a rapid fire mess of jargon. The action happens too fast and the audience doesn't have time to process any of it.
      The rest of the video is good. The Super Mario World rom hacks were great, I think partly due to the length of the game, which allows for more discussion. Pokemon could've benefited a bit more in talking about _how_ manipulating values allows you to execute arbitrary code. A lot of it felt like "I'm doing these weird things for a reason - trust me." Good explanations of small moments but not a clear picture of how they all fit together for the ultimate glitch straight to the hall of fame.
