  • Join us on Friday, May 3 and Saturday, May 4 at 7:30pm when composer, performing and recording artist, vocalist, and WaterWorks Established Artist, Tamar-kali returns to Harlem Stage to present excerpts from the new opera she is developing, ""The Swann.""
William Dorsey Swann was the first known person in this country to identify as a “queen of drag.” A formerly enslaved denizen of our nation’s capital, Swann was also the first American on record to pursue legal and political action to defend the LGBTQ community’s right to gather.
The program concludes with a discussion featuring Tamar-kali and her collaborators, including stage director James Blaszko and Harlem Stage Associate Artistic Director and Curator-in-Residence, Carl Hancock Rux, who wrote the liberetto.
