- Elephant Fight! Elephant vs elephant - Raw footage of an elephant fight that caught everyone off guard. None of us were prepared for filming but we went for it. We rolled up to what we thought was a single elephant in the brush. That's when the two fighting bull elephants burst from the bushes just a few yards from our jeep. They had been at war for a while, both bloodied from battle. This is raw footage so be patient - there are some great moments but I think it is informative to see the way they back off, rest, reassess and then go again.

We had confidence in our guides and didn't fear they would come after us but we were afraid we'd get in between them or they'd inadvertently crash into us. You can tell by our nervous comments that we were not sure which way this was going to go.

the older bull elephant showed
remarkable restraint,
a forceful head butt
to the brave young bull elephant
then the foot stamp
& blowing of dirt to finish.
the music is not necessary
it is dramatic enough by itself

Bon Chance How do you know which one is older? They both look almost equal in height and weight.
@@jaredschmidt8013 As elephants age, their heads continue to grow, and their backs grow longer. Males grow in overall size, but those proportions I just mentioned are still apparent. As an elephant starts to pass his (or her) prime, he often starts to develop a bit of a swayback from the weight - similar to how older humans sometimes get stooped shoulders from the weight pulling down on them.
You can see here that one elephant (the one with the bloody trunk) has that swayback - as well as a slightly larger head, bigger tusks and overall greater size. Like humans (who may go grey or bald, or get wrinkles at older or younger ages) elephants have individual variation - but, taken together, they all point to the bloodied fellow being the older of the two.

There isn't anything "gorgeous" about a fight to the death...potentially!
But thats how a lot of animals decide mating rights, its a part of the natural circle and just as beautiful! Just like death is beautiful.

Some people don't like to see elephants or other male animals fight. I don't know what problem they see in this but I see a natural situation that shows that the animals are healthy and strong and that Natural selection is at work. Wish there were a lot more elephants, lions, tigers, etc.!!! But WE "civilized" humans are slowly destroying them all.

Makes me wonder what the old fellow was trying to keep the youngster away from...
Their body posture clearly showed that the older elephant was seeing the younger one off - but, despite the fact that the younger one gave the older a bloody nose, it seemed more like a stern warning rather than a pitched combat.
Also, the younger elephant was showing signs of musth, but the older one just looked irritated.
The whole scene of body-posturing all seems to rule out a mating dispute, and it seemed a lush time of year to be fighting over food or water. However the OG (Old Guy) was clearly barricading the younger one from going any further in that direction.
Did the guide give any guesses as to why the pair were at odds?
The guide thought it was territorial and also amped up due to a group of female elephants not too far away. Survival of the fittest in all its glory. I was happy to see the smaller elephant eventually left for any lasting damage was done

The guides chalked this up to a territorial dispute and while the younger one put up a good defense, he eventually conceded defeat and walked away peacefully!

Agree 100% Elephants fighting to the death in service of 'survival of the fittest' is nature's intent. Humans have been upsetting the natural. balance since they came on the scene. Fortunately neither of these beautiful creatures died. :-)

they signal their intentions very clearly to each other.
No one has lived to tell tales of an actual elephant fight. When those tusks start doing damage to elephant flesh, the elephants become unaware of anything and anyone around and are only intent on death and destruction. Their strength and speed increase exponentially with their rage.

That's smart! The guides we were with were pretty savvy with animal behavior and knew when to put distance between us and them. But as you can hear - we were pretty scared!
Even enraged by the recent fight, both elephants, once the battle is finished, show remakable restraint by not charging those stupid camera-totting voyeurs!

Yes,clearly evident, the taller fellow was more restrained since he was not in musth,but the shorter one was on ongoing musth,thats why he was challenging a much bigger and older elephant. Hope the youngster learnt a lesson or two.

Sensible to start that vehicle up, elephants in musth -they are fighting so I assume they are - will charge anything. Possibly two young bulls playfighting as I can't see the musth and two bulls amped up with testosterone don't tend to be so willing to stop.
