I suggest getting a sugar glider. I have a sweet little baby girl right now, and will be getting another at some point in the future. Sugar gliders live 12-15 years, and tend to be less destructive. But both are adorable and fun pets. ^^
We raised one a while back. She fell out of her nest after a hurricane, and our dogs snuffled her out of the grass. She didn't even have her eyes open. I carried her with me at school in a fanny pack so I could feed her regularly. :)

He would glide down to me from a high shelf and land on my shoulder. I really loved him but as I grew in to a teenager he sort of took a back seat... I felt guilty now as I look back but I was 10 years old when he showed up in our basement... We did find him a female mate but I'm not sure he was happy about that...still think of him 50 years later.

They bond with their owners like dogs, They will actually reach a little hand through the wires of his cage to try and be with you. It's beyond cute. And with a 10 year or so life span, they make lasting companions.

Get a container of powdered formula and then you can add water to it so you won't have to throw out a whole lot if you end up not needing the entire container. If you've got a young squirrel, do not try to feed any solid foods, because they won't be able to eat it.

I had a good friend who had a pet squirrel he saved and raised from birth, brought it to school upon the teachers permission (this was high school) and let the squirrel loose in class, it clung to him and ran circles around his chest and tummy, and then he fed it and it perched on his head, i myself have had aan opossum named charly (it was a runt and rescued from a mixed litter of 7 from two mothers) and some of my friends that rescue wild animals have a bluejay named jok, he steals cigarettes.

The syringe was given to me by his breeder, and I'm not entirely sure how much it held (can't remember), but I know I filled it up a few times and kept feeding him at least a full syringe every few hours every day until he was able to start eating solid foods. Just make sure you stop about every 6 seconds so they can finish what they have in their mouth to prevent any choking from feeding them too quickly. This is a very slow process, but you'll get the hang of it once you've done it a few times
@wanketta Flying squirrels have been domesticated for quite some time. They've been a fairly popular pet in japan for something upwards of 400 years afaik. There are very very few animals that haven't been domesticated in some way at some time. You're ranting at a person without doing the research. You can find breeders of these adorable little animals, You raise them when they're *very* young and they'll imprint on you and basically consider you their 'tree'.
How did you know how much to feed it? Just until it was done -- or is there a suggested amount? I don't have one and won't rob one from nature, but I had a chance to rescue one the other day but didn't due to not knowing it was even possible.
@wanketta have you considered the possibility that the baby squirrel was orphaned or injured and abandoned? have you considered that the caregiver may only be nursing the squirrel back to health before re-releasing it into the wild? Have you considered that there is such a thing as Wildlife Rehabilitation which is supported on a multi-faceted level by numerous organizations? I know this is your opinion, but it really is circumstantial.
Once i was walking to school, and i thought i almost stepped on a dead rat so i ran the rest of the way. on the way home from school i saw what i almost stepped on, and it was a baby squirrel! It was still moving, well and alive even after being chewed on by flies and who-knows-what. I put on gloves and brought him home, put him in a box and walked him to the vet. unfortunately, noone in my neighbourhood knew anything about squirrels, so i put him in the garage and covered him with blanket
Nope. Sugar gliders are marsupials from Australia. Flying squirrels are rodents. Suggies are social and bond well to humans. Their markings are totally different, and suggies seem to have longer tails. Since sugar gliders aren't rodents, they aren't destructive by nature, in the sense that the don't have to chew on everything to "whittle down" their teeth. They also aren't known to carry nearly as many diseases as most rodents.
@Kayelle1980 I love your answer, and I agree with you, I have one and we founded at work we work at Epcot (Disney) and some guest to be specific ADULTS GUESTS, start kicking the poor animal, so we take it home and now is relax here with food and his pouch!!!

We found an adult one and my daughter loves them!! Can you buy one from a breeder? Is it legal? We live in Minneapolis, MN and the Wildlife Rehab Center took him for a bit since he was sick and then released him.
@laurenaintborin9 No prob. My guy Faust loves me... & only me. He doesn't like anyway else holding him. If anyone tries to get him, he'll either bite them or jump on me. But if I'm around & the one holding him, even little kids can pet him (if they're gentle of course). He's a flying squirrel with an attitude. XD
@wanketta idk cause if i was a exotic animal, it'd be awesome not to be bothered by cats or hawks. I can't have my minature chickens running outside of a cage because a hawk was killing them. I think that whether in their natural habitat or being taken care of, there are an equal amount of pros and cons. Have you watched the discovery channel ? There is such thing as a food chain.
