- Every now and then you need to change the threading of bow. To do that you always have to change the leather as well. I do this on my self-made threading machine.

Again, another good example of making jigs & tools to make life easier & to produce a quicker & better outcome. I made my own winder too as it certainly makes it easier than twisting the bow to wind the wire on (as I've seen others do). I have found the masking tape to go rather tacky over time when I've taken it off other bows (from known current bow makers 'downunder') so I prefer to cut plain paper & glue it on with white glue instead. I usually just use white glue for the leather too but have tried the starting edge with superglue out of frustration with the leather not staying put in its starting position (it works OK when gluing onto plain paper). I usually use a 15mm Swiss steel knife to chamfer the leather but that razorblade idea looks quite effective. If I'm doing my own bow I have been known to continue the wire the full length under the leather, but silver wire costs, so I wouldn't do that normally for others (& if being particular about balancing the bow).
It turned out beautifully. Thank you
Thank you!
A very fascinating video, Maestro! These kinds of disassembly and repair videos give me such an appreciation for a luthier's work and also for a better understanding of my instrument.
Hello Meghann! Good to hear the you liked it!
Never knew my bow needed eyeliner! 😉
Seriously though, cool video! Never knew how that was done.
Everyone can be pretty!!!
Goot to hear that you like it!
Looking forward to seeing the next part of seeing the hair being done.
That video is already one! You can see it here: czcams.com/video/wWwvGOKC6K8/video.html
@@maestrokimon I have seen it but was also hoping to see this one being rehaired too.
Thank you for the video! Yes, a video of how the jig is made would be wonderful. What do you use to clean the bow and the winding?
Hello Jonathan. I will probably make a video about the machine. I use a product to clean silver that is used for jewellery as well.
@@maestrokimon Thank you!
Hi maestro, again wonderful insight in the art of bow making! I play cello, and always wondered if the silver wrapping has a purpose other than esthetics. weight balance ?
Hello Wouter. The silver and leather part are there to protect the wood of the bow. As you know the leather part is where your thumb goes and the silver is for the rest of the finger (approximately!).
Muy .pero muy buen trabajo sobre todo el arte de un bueen laudero felizcidadadedes
👍patreons🍒
Can you share they type (chrome tanned - veg tanned) and weight of leather you use for your wrap?
Please make a video of your wire winding machine.
Good do's. Where did you get the pipe clam with the metal thumb screw?
Thanks Marthinus! I bought it at a local DIY shop like Gamma or Praxis. I don't remember anymore...
Nice video, but i am waiting for episode, when you explain how many wire go get to bow if we have not old wire markings and general about calculating center weight point in bow. Please !!!
Thank you. I will see what I can do about this topic.
@@maestrokimon hello, i want to remind about this topic. I hope to see episode about it. Greetings!
Very informative, Thank You! Is the specific diameter of the wire important? What is the gauge or diameter of the wire you use? I have 3 bows to repair / re hair / regrip. Do you think making a jig will be worth the time?
for violin I use 0,25mm and cello 0,3mm. I wouldn't know how to do it without the machine. I think that it would be more trouble.
@@maestrokimon Thank You for your wisdom. I will make the machine!
@@maestrokimon thanks! I was also curious about the wire diameter
1:53 What kind of liquid did you use with a paper towel to clean the part of the bow where the wire and leather will go?
Hello Sir, would you be so kind to inform me, which kind of glue Titebond, you use ?
Ola, esse fio e de niquel? E 0,30mm?
Are you using all silver wire or copper wire? If with a copper core, how long this working until the silver is out to copper? And I also wanted to ask. Some manufacturers of violin bows cover the winding with transparent tape. How much is right? Indeed, when playing it is more difficult to keep.
I mostly put back what the maker had put on it. If it is pure silver, that's what I also put. Otherwise silver plated copper.
Why is the silver thread looking black and silver in the beginning and what did you use to clean it?
Hello Toon. It is a bit black because it was oxidised. I use a product to clean silver that is used for jewellery as well.
This was a very helpful video indeed, I will build one of those rigs for winding. Question where can you buy the silver wire?
Good to hear! You can buy the wire and other supplies at dictum.com
Why do we need silver winding? Wouldn't a plastic material be more protective and give better grip?
There is also plastic winding but it is more of an aesthetic mater that protection or grip.
Thick (2mm) plasitic windings exist as 'imitation whalebone'. Vinyl is common on cheaper thumb grips, but does not last as long as leather.
Some silver windings come with a protective layer of clear tape to slow the speed at which the silver tarnishes.
Silver is much heavier than plastic, so plays a role in the weight, balance and 'feel' of the bow.
For example, there are plastic and wooden violins. Also an Original KFC and a faked product.
Why not choose a plastic violin which is more durable And cheap fake KFC when a real violin is very sensitive And real KFC is tastier and more expensive?
We're talking about authenticity, Quality, Beauty, and what is desired. Not just functions, cheap cost, and copies.

Say this was a new bow that had never been wound before, or you didn't have wire of equal denisty to the one on the bow originally, how would you work out the amount of winding needed to balance the bow? I imagine you could also change the balance significantly by continuing the winding all the way under the leather or use a different density or thickness of wire? I always find this tricky, especially trying to predict the final weight of the bow when the hair is missing. That's one reason why I rarely dare to touch a bow mysself...
Hello Tobias. The weight of the wire is a very small portion of the weight of the bow. Threading one centimetre more or less won't change the balance significantly especially because it is weight added to the side where you keep the bow with your hand. Adding weight to the tip has a much bigger effect. The thickness of the wire varies between 0,2mm and 0,3mm, that 0,1mm more is also not significant enough in my opinion.
@@maestrokimon Well thank you, that's nice to hear. I can't say if I think it makes a difference, but what you say certainly gives me a bit of courage to try rewrapping a few bows and see what I think :-)
@@Tostra1997 As always, try ona cheap one, if you mess up, no regret!!!
@@maestrokimon Oh, don't worry! I never touch anything nice before I'm confident I can do a good job. Besides, I don't have many good bows, so... :-P
with what clean the thread?
I use a product to clean silver that is used for jewellery as well.
How’s the Pochette coming along?
Today I'm staring to film the upcoming video that will be online the 11th of July!
/////please show us how to build the machine.
Probably, I will. Thank you for the sugestion!
What are Differences between violin and cello bows?
The cello bow is shorter, heavier and thicker.
@@maestrokimon Is it possible to use the cello bow to play the violin?Or not the right thing to do.
It is not the right thing to do. A cello bow is to heavy for the violin. You will have problems with your arm if you do so.
Do you sell used bows?
Yes I have some bows for sell, can you send me an e-mail?
You should clean the silver wire with steel wool before it wraps around the bow stick. It'll look cleaner. Sure you cleaned it up but it still looks kinda dirty. Also, you didn't go into taking into account weight and balance of the bow when deciding the length of the winding. Probably because it's too complicated for youtube. Gonna teach a whole bunch of Grandpa Guarneris how to mess up their bows 😬

In my opinion, the end of leather is too close to the frog. 6 mm distance should be better. So that the thumb will never touch the leather.
The thumb should always toch the leather! The leather is there to protect the wood! Otherwise, the wood gets used and damaged.
@@maestrokimon Actually when the bow is tightened, there will be a space between the end of leather and the frog. So, the thumb will always touch the wood stick, rather than only touch the leather. I believe the point finger should rest on the leather, rather than on the metal threads. Therefore, there should be enough space between the leather and the frog.
It definitely is for the thumb as well. I have seen bows with a used leather where the nail had caused significant damage to the wood of the bow. And once there is a groove at that point, you can't repair it anymore, and the bow loses its value.
