      @Orange Manok no, oil pump is still stock. Install an external oil pressure gauge and if your hot idle oil psi is below 20 then upgrade, but if around 20 the engine should be fine as long as you use full synthetic 5w30, use motorcraft oil filters and change both every 5k miles.

He has a video to this effect somewhere on his channel. If he sees this maybe he'll link that. IMHO the cost for a high volume pump isn't that much more than a regular one so why not? • @okhotrodder
    @okhotrodder Před rokem +20

    I've been saying this for years. My wife says people don't want to know the details why their engine is making a noise. They just want it fixed. I'd say 95% of owners that go to the dealer or another shop instantly get told they need a new engine. I've lost business from telling people it just needs a timing set and an hv oil pump because they've been convinced by the other 3 shops that the engine is bad. I get told I don't know what I'm doing and no way I'm working on their vehicle. Just irritating when I hear someone say they spent $8k plus getting a new engine. Wish I could convince people to hand over money like that.
    A couple of years ago, doing 5.4 3v timing jobs was my bread and butter. I still have several sitting that just need a timing set, from the owners insisting on a new engine. Shops don't have mechanics with experience to know what the issue is, so they just say needs a new engine. And shops go with the flow with other shops to make more money. Meaning, when a customer says the other shop said they need an engine, they say yep, it does.
    I believe the 5.4 3v got a bad reputation for a few reasons. One, lack of maintenance or improper maintenance. Two, mechanics/shops shaking their head and saying needs a new engine. Three, people hearing stories about how bad their engine is.

    • @johnsonbobo2376

      Dude 5.4 3 valve is a horrible engine. MACK says so himself in a lot of these videos

    • @okhotrodder
      @okhotrodder Před rokem +7

      @Johnson Bobo The 5.4 3v may be worse than other Ford engines in some opinions, but every one of them I've had has lasted over 200k. I can't say that for other engine brands. If they are properly maintained, they usually give a full service life. I don't work on just Fords. I work on anything that comes in the door, and that includes Dodge, Chevy, Honda, Toyota, BMW, VW, Peterbuilt, Cat, etc. Also Briggs and straton, tao tao, and anything else.
      With all the hauling I do, the engine that caused the least issue was the 5.4 3v. In the military, I worked on mainly diesels, and I'd much rather work on a 3v than pretty much any other engine. To me, they are easy and not complicated at all. I never said he is wrong. I just know I use to do timing sets on them pretty often for customers, and everyone has told me they didn't have any other issues other than the filter adapter leaking, which was an easy fix also.
      A timing set doesn't make an engine the worst one out there. And Ford is having issues with timing components just like every other manufacturer is. Timing jobs are apart of maintenance. I still have several 3v's myself that run fine with over 240k miles. I can't say that for anything else I've owned, and I currently have over a dozen personal vehicles of different makes sitting here.

    My 2009 ford Lincoln platinum started doing that at 80k. I only have 132k as today. It would come on and off that noise and I had the motor 2 years ago in 2020 chemically flushed and cleaned inside out without taking it apart and then put new oil witch they never found any metal shavings or anything and the noise has been gone since then. I do oil changes every 3000k or every 4 months. It is the 5.4 - 3V as well. Love your videos. No one my town wants to put hands on them and the dealers keep giving no answers and just want trades done. Sick and tired of them. I may just have to do all the work my self and just change everything as I go. The truck has treated me great for all these years beside that noise for a while.

I'm in the process of getting enough parts together to build a longblock to replace my engine using the links you have provided in several other of your videos.
    I have two questions if you'd be willing to answer with your opinion.
    1. In a completely fresh engine with the melling pump, do you still recommend the 5w30 oil?

    Thank you so much for your videos and taking the time to explain things. I wish you were closer I would love to have you listen to my truck. 09 F250 with 153K automatic. Only at hot idle. I didn't learn from the last F350 with 218K on it, it had phaser issues which I solved by installing new ones with the lock outs. This one may be headed the same way before I send it to sale.

    Ive just replaced the lifters on my (AUS)Ford Falcon 5.4 3v thinking the knock was coming from the front 2 cylinders on the right (drivers side here in oz). Cams out and replaced them all. The old ones were very loose with no spring pressure as opposed to the new ones which were very hard to compress...............Still have the same knock...... Phasers and oil pump next i guess but cant buy oem parts anywhere in Australia and Amazon are sold out...Not sure where to get a reliable timing kit from. 5.4 3v isnt very common here. Great work Brian 👍

I’m on the fence about taking on this job cause I’m not sure what the total labor time’s are&she’s a single mom that doesn’t have extra money to spend. Please lmk a aprox labor time&what brand of timing kit you use. I really appreciate your time&video’s. Aloha from Hawaii🤙🏽

    Your channel is great and helped me out so many times. Was wondering what a blown lifter was like. Doing a complete rebuild and have two lifters that are not priming and not sure if I should just replace all or just the two. I know, if I have it apart, I should just replace them all. The old parts cannon gets pretty expensive though when set to full auto. Lol.

    Good video. Of course having a good scan tool so watch your timing PID’s is a good way to back up your diagnosis. Guess if you get to the point where a high volume pump is needed looking at cam journals and crank end float is key before you put the wedding ring on it.

    so if I have the second of these (stumbling at low rpm / high load) with some noise and ticking at start up... is that more likely solved by a high volume oil pump to get better pressure at low rpm, or more like a timing job needed? TIA

    Outstanding subject knowledge. Thank you. I think I've both noises. Not sure if it is phaser knock or bad followers. Really have the oscillation. Goes away if RPM's are raised, returns as it approaches idle. Need to pop the truck to neutral and rev the engine at traffic lights. You don't tell us the solution. Is it a phaser failure, solenoid failure or an oil pressure failure? Add a Melling oil pump and 5w30 solves the problem?

    My 2007 F-150 5.4 has always had the phaser oscillation noise since I bought it with just over 40k. I've had an oil pressure gauge on it for years now and when it is "oscillating", the gauge shows a steady 40 PSI. In response to you saying it's because of a low oil pressure issue, I think that's strange because if that were true (in the case of my truck at least), I'd think it'd be a lot lower than that.

    My 2010 Navigator does the off-idle rattle at the drive through, but is quiet at idle, that said I run 10w30 year round and that helps with it not being rough at idle. It also will rattle on startup sometimes, I'm sure the tensioners are blown out. Time for a timing job. I have gotten most of the parts but still need the phasers and solenoids.
    But I also need a new ABS module and some other stuff. Thing's getting to be a basket case. I will probably fix it, although the wife won't be happy about it, it's cheaper than upgrading.

    I never know what to think of these 5.4 engines. 😂. These videos make them look like the worst engine ever. There are millions of these engines on the road still and they haven’t put one in an f150 in 13 years. So Maby there are just 2 groups of owners. Ones that do maintenance and ones that don’t!! By the way I’ve got this engine in my 2008 plow truck with 235,000 miles and it still runs. It is getting more noisy but I think rust will take the truck before I ever crack the engine open!!! Great videos

    Yes my truck does the same thing, when about to go into gear it rattles, rattles on startup, and when in low rpm’s when accelerating after coming to a complete stop sometimes it will rattle a couple of times almost like it’s still trying to accelerate after my foot is fully on the brake.. but my fuel filter also needs to be replace unfortunately two of the three prongs are bent inside of the safety release…
