  • It's not uncommon to feel anxious, sad, fearful or even depressed after a traumatic injury. After all, recovery can take a long time, and we're not sure how much mobility and strength will return after we heal. It's important to honor our feelings and find healthy coping strategies for dealing with any distressing emotions. In this video, I talk about my own fears and sadness after two wrist fractures and surgeries. I also talk about the importance of setting small, achievable goals to rebuild confidence.
Let me know how you find inner strength.

Man! I can't tell you how much these videos you've posted have encouraged me and helped me! I fell two days before Thanksgiving and broke my distal radius. A week later I had surgery to have a plate and screws placed. No one told me beforehand what the recovery time line was going to look like, so I didn't go into it realizing how long it was going to take. I started OT right after surgery, but I've had a lot of swelling and a lot of pain and progress has been slow. Dealing with the psychological issues while it seems that almost everyone around me really doesn't understand has been at least as bad as the disability ( and part of the pain). Everyone around me was "over" my right hand being out of commission and me struggling two to three weeks in to the whole process 🥺. People with distal radius fractures really do need a support group!!!

Thanks, Syl. I'm happy these videos have been helpful. It's awesome that you started getting therapy right after surgery. That's key for getting proper advice for your specific injury. Yeah, it takes a lot of patience to get through an injury like this -- and the psychological impact is huge. Take your time and give yourself grace. Set goals to challenge yourself, but also know when to rest. I made the mistake of pushing myself too much in the beginning, which delayed my recovery a bit. It's difficult to be patient. Take care and keep up the great work. :)

Mike, I’m so glad that I came across your video. On May 3, 2023, I fell off a mobile stage working my dream job and broke my right wrist in 2 locations. Surgery followed with the titanium plate inserted. I’m 40 years old and this was my first surgery ever. Aside from nervous and anxious feelings about the surgery, I was also concerned about my ability to ever do the things I love to do again. I’m now 3 1/2 weeks post surgery with a velcro brace and going out of my mind with not being able to work and do those things that make me who I am. Finding your video when I did has been a saving grace and has renewed my hope that I can regain full use of my wrist and return to those things that make me who I am. Sincerely, thank you!

Yes, you'll get through this. The first two to three months feel the worst -- but I was focused on staying health and getting strong. I had a great PT who provided me a lot of support and exercises to get my mobility back. I was able to start mountain biking again 6-months after my surgery. It hurt in the beginning because my wrist wasn't used to gripping handle bars and feeling the vibration of the bike, but my wrist and hand got stronger over time. I started doing pull-ups and push-ups again about a year after surgery. I'm feeling just as strong as before and grateful not to have any pain now. Please take care and keep me updated.

I broke my distal radius bone 3 weeks ago. Thankfully I didn’t need surgery, but I’ve got a cast. I’m really bumming because whenever I try to walk/easy exercise, my body retains water and my arm has been swelling up in the cast causing some really uncomfortable nights. Dr says not to exert myself. 😢 the depression is real. I also just started mountain biking about 8 months ago, and am so sad that I can’t ride now that the weather is getting better. I’ve been having anxiety attacks just walking sometimes cause i hurt myself walking and falling. Today, as that came over me, I repeated over and over and over aloud (and through the fear tears) “I have an excellent sense of balance”. Also I’ve tried to get a therapist to talk to during the weeks of immobility. It didn’t work to find one. But I’m acute aware of the apathy, depression/anger and isolation and how it’s affecting me. I can’t drive my stick shift, I don’t have friends coming to visit or inviting me out, etc.

Thank you so much! I am 1 wk out from surgery (plate and screws) on my wrist. The emotional part is something that is not discussed...it should be! During this recovery I am taking and appreciate all my achievements. Unfortunately my doctor only expressed to me is to simply wiggle my fingers until my post op appointment. I'm grateful I came across yours and others videos that stated wiggle is not enough. The swelling was intense and still have open wounds between my fingers caused from swelling. Simple and small finger exercises helped alot! Now I know I'm not alone when it comes to the emotional part too. Especially when before I escaped through exercising. I cant wait to do strength training again but for now I will start with visualizing and be grateful for small accomplishments.

Excellent insight into post trauma feelings! Almost six months for me too but I don’t feel like getting on my bike just yet. I was really sad at first as I felt as though I was missing out on my usual summer activities. I decided I would start up my running again about a month ago, but I’m quite nervous of slipping and instinctively putting out my hand to break the fall, which would probably not be good!! So I only go out if the weather is dry and it’s not slippery underfoot. Crazy really, as I’ve never slipped when out running…
I’ve definitely benefitted from setting little goals, and then logging these down. Then on days when I feel I’m not making any progress, I can look back at how much I’ve achieved and that keeps me positive.
Keeping focussed on better things ahead is key to recovery. Now the shortest day is behind us I’m looking forward to the spring and getting out and about more. Thanks for the video Mike and keeps up the good work!

@@MichaelDelgado My fall in March, was a Smith Fracture. I landed on the back side of my wrist/hand and shattered my wrist. Had surgery to put in a plate. I was told only 5% of wrist fractures are Smith. So, that said, you can land on the outside of your hand, with the inside wrist pointing upward and still suffer a major break. Most people do instinctively put out their hands when falling. However, my fall on ice in the road was so sudden, happened so fast, I didn't have time to react. Even if you 'train' yourself to fall a certain way, doesn't mean the break will be any less. Just a thought.

Mike, for me the trauma from the post surgery is actually worse than the actual accident. I was promised full anesthesia as in GAS ANESTHESIA, but only got a nerve block and Versed (amnesia drug). Well I have Ehlers Danlos, a connective tissue disorder, and people with it metabolize local anesthesia very very quickly. Previously I had 2 crowns placed and the dentist did not believe me that the 3 anesthesia injections into my gums were not working. I could still feel everything!! A nightmare!
But nowhere near the nightmare of this surgery. I have had nightmares ever since. I believe the Versed does not fully “delete” the memories but just puts them into your subconscious. When that nerve block wore off, the Drs answering service told me he would call me back. He did NOT. I ended up at the ER an hour away, begging for pain meds. Turns out that during the SIXTEEN DAYS I waited for surgery, my fractures had “completely healed “ and the ostomy wire was insufficient to cut thru so he had to use a ostomy saw (Bone Saw) to CUT THRU MY RADIUS! The pain and swelling was worse than the original accident! The Dr did not stick around to talk to me, nor talk to my partner. He left no instructions about starting my pain pills early so when the nerve block wore off, I was in immediately hellish pain.
I now have ZERO TRUST for this Dr.
Even though the Drs all knew this, they did not give me gas, I bet the whole surgery took him 5 minutes! It looks like his 20 something PA did the closing, my scar is UGLY! And I didn’t have a compound fracture like yours.
After the surgery for some reason they plastered my arm into a position with the hand SIDEWAYS. This was how it looked for 16 days as I awaited surgery. After 2 week post op, when he removed the plaster my hand was still flopped over like Lobster Boy! I attempted PT but everything so swollen and painful and the therapist made it worse by forcefully contorting my hand/wrist. Swelling and pain actually got worse! They then put me back into a full fiberglass cast after MANUALLY STRAIGHTENING MY WRIST WITH NO ANESTHESIA!! This Dr is a sadist. I am awaiting having ALL IMPLANTS REMOVED because I am allergic to most metals and the titanium screws are causing reactions. I don’t look forward to a second surgery, but the misery of leaving them in is worse. They lie and tell you it’s 100% titanium but research this for yourself, there are ALWAYS trace metals! And they don’t stay put. Studies have found metals from implants in the BONE MARROW on patients. A good friend has pain and swelling a year post op. Another has officially been classified as having an autoimmune disease. It sometimes takes a while for patients to connect the dots between symptoms and their implants.

The beginning is painful, so give yourself grace (and don't push yourself too hard). Focus on the small wins along the way. I celebrated the first time I could hold a tennis ball in my hand -- and then celebrated again when I could move it around with all my fingers. Keep exercising in whatever way possible. I would walk a lot every day and then used a stationary bike. Thanks Mr. Delgado. I appreciate your willingness to share your experience. My non-medical opinion is the mental aspects of physical injures are vastly overlooked. Having been through two fairly traumatic injuries (the latest a distal radius/ulna/thumb break and UCL reconstruction) the sudden inability to be active, the burden of the recovery process, and adjusting your lifestyle are a lot for your brain to process. Certainly agree that an injury can lead to depression or frustration if you aren't equipped to deal with it. Coping with injuries can get easier over time; however, injuries are never the same and not knowing how successful or how long your recovery will last adds another level of anxiousness. I appreciate you taking the time to make this video series about your recovery. It helps those dealing with something similar to know what to expect with the physical and emotional healing. It also shows a progression over time and gives hope to those who need it.
My broken bones have been done on motorcycles. In my case, I draw strength from setting small goals as you mentioned, learning how others recovered from a similar injury to set expectations, and the determination to get back to riding again.

I fractured my distal radius 4 wks ago after a slip and fall on ice. My surgeon already approved for me to go back to work on light duty, however I am very frightened of injuring the injury and I’m seriously thinking of not going back after all. My thumb is not working properly, but there is a tremendous degree of improvement in other fingers and hand, since the swelling has mostly subsided. I only have pain now if I make a false move; even by a centimeter ! For sure this is not has been easy, and the fear and loss of independence is exasperating and depressing. I have to force myself to remain positive about my prognosis, otherwise I easily go into a dark space. All your advice is right on target and I look forward to heading back to the gym. Also going for walks in fresh air is so good. Hope to play the keyboard again soon but that sure isn’t happening now. Best of luck to you and everyone.

I have been in such a high state of stress and anxiety since I broke my wrist twelve weeks ago. In the beginning I was crying because I hated the cast. I have had claustrophobia. I called the doctor and he told me I could come in the next day and get it removed and get a splint instead. He said they do this for their claustrophobic patients. Apparently some saw their own casts off because they can’t handle it. I liked the splint because I could loosen the ace bandage and lift up the bottom piece now and then. I had it on for thirty days. I still didn’t like it. I felt like my wrist and hand was on a straight jacket. I used to pace from room to room in my home. I’m an artist so I started painting every day. I’m also a piano player. At first I couldn’t even press down a key. But eventually I could play but not as easily as before. Little by little I was able to dress myself without help, put my contacts in, tie my shoes, button my shirt. Today I washed and dried my hair myself! Today I was able to make a fist without using my other hand. I broke my non dominant hand. I can’t imagine what a basket case I would be if it was my dominant hand. So grateful for that. I broke it playing pickleball. I fell down hard on my behind and sprang forward with my arm outstretched to break my fall. I saw when the wrist broke. Prior to this I was playing three times a week. But I can’t risk it again because although I knew I had osteoporosis and have been on Fosomax I did not have a good appreciation for what that truly meant. My surgeon said he had a hard time getting the titanium plate fastened on because the screws kept falling out due to how bad my bone was from the osteoporosis. Now I’m top of the prescription med I’m taking Osteo-Vegan Rx that my chiropractor recommended to heal and strengthen bones. I kept telling my occupational therapist that more needs to be done to address the psychological aspects of a broken bone. My general practitioner prescribed six Xanax pills for me when I called his office to tell him about my anxiety. I only took a quarter of a pill a few times. I really don’t like taking them but I wanted them on hand. I mean that’s how bad my stress and anxiety were. My therapist tried to reassure me that I’m in schedule and to stop overthinking it. Easier said than done. I suggested they let patients see first hand proof that they will be able to move their wrist and fingers again. Your videos do that. The therapists should recommend them to their patients. I think I’m finally turning the corner. I still have some work to do. I’m not able to bend my hand back or put weight on it. I think once I can do that I’ll be thrilled.

I'm 76 year old disabled female who after a fall indoors broke the radius & ulna in my right dominant forearm 9 weeks ago. I had manual reduction, with a not very effective nerve block, that hurt like hell! 5 weeks in a cast; no check Xray before cast removed and a wrist support splint applied. I was discharged home with a physiotherapy leaflet showing a plan of wrist exercises. I was allocated carers 4 times a day because of my injury and my other disabilities.
Ive had pain all the time but now no pain in radius side of my arm but continued pain on the ulna side along with some sensory nerve damage I suspect. The problem I'm experiencing now is doing the strengthening exercises; I can't yet carry a mug of tea! Trying to do the exercises causes more intense pain; even when Ive taken pain killers & allowed them to kick in before starting the exercises! Rang the hospital physio department; left a message twice today and no one has got back to help offer me advice! Feeling very frustrated until I watched your video and realising the battle to get my independence back it going to be much longer that I thought!

I tripped and fell in June of this year over a fence.Distal radial fracture L wrist(my dominant hand) I had surgery but went through a lot of hoops to get proper care. The 1st clinic “disregarded” me and misread my X-ray! 2 days later I went to another ER as my hand turned black and blue 2 days later! Yep,you need surgery, see another Dr.! Dr.John Giuliani of Oahu performed the surgery 2 weeks after the break! I’m a soon to be a 69 yo woman, who is active: I play classical piano, have a granddaughter, do SUP and wingfoiling. We have 3 large dogs too. 6 months later i have some residual stiffness but I’m back playing my piano again! I was able to go Wingfoiling after 4 months and have resumed going to xfit class (scaled back moves)and riding my bike. During that 1st week i was able to ride indoor bike(w arm in sling)and superset that w chair squats.I couldn’t walk my dog for 3 months,I resumed my more advanced piano studies at that time as well. I’m grateful i had a good surgeon and especially my PT-she gave me guidelines as to what i could do and she was strict! I was real sad, tried to hide any crying and despair I felt. My husband wasn’t supportive all the time…he didn’t even want to take me to the er 2 days later when my hand was black and blue! I couldn’t drive or go anywhere and i was lonely ! I’m glad this is all over and seem to be doing well. I’m gunshy and fearful of further injuries too. I had to stay active best i could as I couldn’t afford to gain any more weight!

Sucks because I show my dogs and that uses my left hand! I currently am 2 months out and in extreme pain and swelling still in a hard cast. Can’t reliably hold a leash even for a small Pekingese. Missing the shows which are all I had for a hobby. Also missing yoga and all the other HIIT exercises that I can’t do. The atrophy after 2 weeks was extremely difficult to see. By now it’s beyond that. Sucks I worked years for that muscle.

Please know these feelings are normal. You've experienced a traumatic injury and surgery. It takes time to heal physically and emotionally from what you've experienced. I felt scared about my mobility and what the future might look like for me after surgery. During my healing journey, I focused on self-care and taking care of myself. I worked with a physical therapist to learn ways to help my hand feel better and get stronger. I also used this time to become more reliant on my other hand. I'm right-handed so it was difficult for me to do things with just my left hand after the break. I was very slow at typing with my left hand and moving my computer mouse. Everything took longer to do and I had to focus on being patient with myself and teaching my body to operate differently. I tried to stay positive and focus on getting better at doing things with my left hand every day while I healed. It took me a full year before I could do a push-up again, and by that time I had more dexterity and strength in my left arm and hand. If you have time and resources, I highly suggest talking with a counselor or therapist while you recover. It's super helpful to talk about our fears with a trained professional. Please take care of yourself and keep me updated on your journey. You'll get stronger through this.

I broke my distal radius the exact day you did but got my surgery on the 27th (13 days post injury). What my orthopedic surgeon told me right before they put me to sleep was, immediately move your fingers, do it all day every day and he said if I can make a complete fist at my 2 week post surgery appointment (13 days post surgery) that I would not require physical therapy. I am currently 8 days post surgery and thank god my hand swelling went down because somehow I am about 95% able to make a fist right now. Keep in mind that many like myself have systemic metal allergies and having metal implants is guaranteed shit QOL. Don’t believe the 100% titanium no one has ever reacted to it, blah, blah blah…..the truth is there’s no such thing as 100% pure titanium implants. They always have trace metals whether intentional or during manufacturing process. My surgeon found me a polycarbonate plate but had to use titanium screws. I started reacting the first week! Misery! Counting the days to get this crap removed! Many don’t realize that issues such as fatigue, headaches, General edema, pain, fibromyalgia etc can all be symptoms of reaction to implants. Most aren’t tested for allergies before surgery. I was lucky so I had lab tests to prove my allergies and still had surgeons in denial. Some may become allergic later after the foreign object is in their body. You can still rebreak your radius even with the plate and/or screws. It will just break in a different spot.
Despite the absolute HELLISH PAIN of the surgery (I was promised FULL GENERAL ANESTHESIA BUT GOT A NERVE BLOCK AND SOME VERSED). The nerve block wore off and I ended up back in the ER due to pain. No thanks. Next time FULL anesthesia and FULL supply of post op opioids.

Healing takes time. Be patient with yourself and keep talking with your doctor or PT about your progress. I kept focusing on trying to improve my mobility a little bit each month. My problem is that I was pushing myself a bit too hard in the beginning, which slowed down my healing process a bit. This is why talking with a PT can really help with figuring out the right balance of how much rest and how much to push yourself can help. You'll get through this.

Same here. That nerve blocker was so troubling to me. My arm was just dead weight and kept falling out of the sling 😫 But 16 hours after surgery the blocker was gone… but then came the pain and oxycodone 😮

Not me! I refused the nerve block. I had one once before for a capsular release on a frozen shoulder and I hated the way I felt when it was wearing off. It felt like my finger tips were on a block of ice. I started flipping out and had to take two pain pills, a muscle relaxant and something else per doctor’s instruction to knock myself out for the night. The next morning the nerve block had worn off and I was fine. So when I got the titanium plate put in they kept trying to understand why I was refusing the nerve block. They woke me in recovery and the pain was excruciating and the doctor said this is why we wanted you to get the nerve block. But that real bad pain settled down pretty quickly with my pain meds and I didn’t have that fingers on the ice feeling to cope with.

I had a non-dislocated distal radius fracture and an ulna fracture (?) Not a bad break they said..They put it in a splint and said to follow up with Ortho in 3 days..No insurance..5 weeks now in same splint..it stinks and is getting somewhat dirty..ugh..I imagine this was meant to allow for swelling the first few dats then they would have done a plaster cast...Anyway I need to get an xray soon to verify that it is/did heal...$$$..ugh..I can attest to the depression, fear sadness..you name it I felt it!! very scary feeling to be alone with nobody to say it's going to be ok then hug you..I can barely put my underwear on!! my socks! I drive a STICK shift! Thank God it was my left hand! So...how long after a fracture like this can I start to move it and do some excercizes? I guess an xray would determine this? I would hope that after 5 weeks it would have mended? I would know if it had moved or dislocated between the xray on day of injury and 5 weeks??!! I had little to no pain up until now..past week any exertion makes it kinda sore but overnight it goes back to no pain..HELP!!

Please take care of yourself. Definitely follow up with your doctor to get that x-ray so you know when the bone has healed. It will take time to get mobility and strength back, so be careful when you get the approval to start moving it again. I share the mobility exercises that my physical therapist had me work on in the previous video.

@@MichaelDelgado I decided to unwrap my splint to take a look since it's been almost 6 weeks..I'm working on finding a self pay x-ray but I did buy a velcro wrist brace to take the place of this splint..so I started taking the wrap off and once down to the bare skin and soft gauze lining all dirty my wrist felt funny..I guess it would after being wrapped up for weeks! It felt like it moved some which was odd like a bone moved? I dont know but that scared me that maybe something came lose? I would think if I had dislocated it between the initial break and now that I would have felt that!! I think I would have had a lot of pain! I guess i should get that final x-ray before I take it off??!! Thank you for all the encouragement! it truly helps!

I'm going through the pain tht u went thru 😢 watched all your videos looks like you went through exactly what I'm going through right now. The only thing I'm worried about is my doctor because he doesn't seem to be much cooperative. he's like surgery is done now it's my responsibility to get it moving or get back the range of motion 😢. I'm a gymrat and really worried about how am i gonna lift weights. Also, i wanna ask about the excercise for mobility. it's been around 15 days since my surgery took place but with the recent appointment with my doctor he moved my hand crazily told me to do tht quite often but when I'm doing that at my house i feel like something stopping my wrist from moving specially it feels like my bones are getting in the way while moving it. I'm really worried tbh, when i got into tht accident and saw my hand the first thing that hit my mind was gym that I'm never gonna be able to go back to gym. i used to be a skinny kid after joining gym my personality literally switched but now looks like I'm gonna go back where i started 😢😢😢i really don't know what to do

Since I was worried about the recovery, today my stitches were supposed to be removed and they did remove them. However, the doctor told me to have an x-ray. So, after looking at the x-ray, he told me that there was a bone that was supposed to be attached back but he 'doctor' missed it during my surgery and told me to have the surgery again. Oh God I'm literally shattered 😭😭 Don't know what to do. Why do I have to go through the same pain again and why after around 15 days😭😭😭😭I'm devastated

Please take care of yourself. It takes time to heal and gain mobility back. I worked with a physical therapist to get some exercises to improve mobility and used a heating pad before exercises to warm my hand. Once I had better mobility, I started to do some strength-based exercises, which were painful at first. I didn't do pushups for at least 8 months, but I started with wall push-ups first. Give yourself time and don't push yourself too much. Your body needs to heal. I made the mistake of trying to do weights too soon after surgery and that made recover process take longer.

I have my strength and mobility back -- but I do have some pain sometimes. My doctor says the pain is from tendonitis that developed from my previous wrist brake. I've been mountain biking almost daily -- and even got back to roller blading. I'm grateful that I can do all my normal activities pain free. I hurt my wrist three weeks ago when trying to use a wrench to twist off a bolt. I had to push the wrench in an odd direction that put too much pressure on my wrist -- and that caused a lot of pain. I need to be more careful when using a wrench or twisting off jar lids.

It's awesome to hear that your mobility and strength have since returned, even if it's still painful sometimes. Hopefully, perhaps even that too will eventually go away. While I really appreciate Mike for these videos, I would like to say that everyone is different. I broke my wrist 2 and a half weeks ago, had surgery 5 days later. It's been 11 days since surgery and I am able to touch all my fingers with my thumb. I do appreciate the section on repeating the activity that resulted in the wrist fracture because I am scared to death of falling again. So I will work on that. Just a funny note, innocent me, I watched your first 2 videos a couple of days ago feeling pretty good to start and I almost fainted because I could feel your pain from those first few weeks. I felt light headed and very faint! Luckily for me it hasn't been my experience but I do really appreciate the heads up so I have an even firmer intention to avoid it! Typing with one finger sucks though!! Thanks Mike.

How are you doing now? I was in a splint for five weeks after surgery and the bottom of that splint was just below my fingers. My thumb was not able to move because of how the splint was on. No way I could touch it to any fingers. Then when the splint was removed at my first occupational therapy session I was given the exercise Mike talks about. I remember it being so painful but I could touch each finger with my thumb. But the tip of my thumb wasn’t bending all the way so I couldn’t form an O with each finger. Eventually my therapist got that end of my thumb bending and then I could make the O. So I think this all depends on how much restriction one has after surgery from a cast or a splint and how long their surgeon wants it left on.
