So you may remember Anduin as the golden boy, the knight in shining armor just a few years back and now he is looking like a 15 years older wretched blood elf dehydrated and looking like he was just saved from the desert, what really happened to this guy?
Some would say the Shadowlands happened, which technically is true but if you missed the storylinestoryline and some other hints from Dragonflight as well, let's bridge that gap. He has been missing for over 5 years and has apparently lost his light which is going to be a massive part of at least the next 2 expansions. So what is even going on with Anduin?

I think the War Within cinematic is setting the stage for Anduin to gain closure from his PTSD, and become the leader the Alliance will need to face the Void in "Midnight".
Imagine Anduin coming face to face with Xal'atath sometime late in War Within, saying "You know what? I've faced worse." and blasting her in the face with a good Smite.
Genn in a moment of RP on the docks of stormwind harbour at the beginning of Dragonflight states that the king has been missing for "Several years" so even longer than 5 years.
I would go for even bigger plot twist. I think Anduin would need a guide to overcome that darkness in him from Shadowlands. The best teacher for that will be Sylvanas Windrunner. Why her? Cus she knows how much darkness can dwell in soul and that it can twist one. On the outher hand she needs someone that will bring some light to her existence and at the same time can help restore Anduin power of light.
I thought as well about Alleria help Anduin but i think her knowledge about void however big won't help him, but could help players in journey.
My 3rd guess (propably wrong as those 2 before) will be that Anduin would undergo a change of class. Here is 3 visions. First: he'll go warrior as his father Varrian.
Second: if by some sort of miracle light return to him that would bring a chance for him to become paladin under Turalyon guide.
Third: I think he still has his shadow powers (as a priest) so maybe some sort of new class upcoming with void powers.
I think he is the 'Arthas' if Arthas had taken the correct path instead of one out of vengeance. He is almost constantly compared to Arthas. So I just think Anduin is the Arthas if Arthas had done good and not bad.
As for his looks... Well BFA to War Within is around 7 years later. It has been 14 years since the start of Classic at the start of DF, so he is 24.
In a nutshell, Anduin wasn't able to catch a break ever since Vanilla, and Shadowlands was something that broke him. The fact he hasn't gone insane by now is pure miracle
Techincally he hasn't caught a break since before vanilla. lol. The fact that he hasn't gone off and found some dark power and come back as Void King, or w/e. Is a testament to his willpower, even if he doesn't see it right now.
Dude, needs to be a freakin Paladin and grow some balls.
@@tonydak8573lol grow some balls. PTSD crumbles even the strongest.

This is the best tldr for this video
As someone who's been to war, I recognize that look in his eyes. I feel it. He's not crying, he's coming apart at the seems and it's all he can do to stay intact.
The community's lack of understanding Anduin's character arc are the same people who are oblivious to the veteran epidemic in the United States. If everybody had mandatory service, I am 95% convinced half of the social issues and miscommunications in society would be fixed through mutual understanding of pain and recovery.
Even not being a soldier. A viewer with any severe trauma can see the breaking in his eyes and face.
If we read all the books and play the games we get his whole back story and trauma.
I'm a veteran as well. Didn't go to war, but a lot of my friends did. As someone who was left out of the chance to fight alongside my brothers, the look in his eyes in that cinematic damn near broke me. It felt like one of my friends had been back for a couple of months and started going downhill. All I could think was "Let's go talk and have a beer, bro..." Like one of my friends needed me again. Blizzard nailed it.
I love how some "masculine" people give Anduin so much shit, how he's weak, naive and unworthy as a king.
Meanwhile all around him are warmongerers that try to fight everyone they see. Or schemers that lie and ruin so many life's.
And there is Anduin, someone who wants to break the cycle of hatred around him. And is as transparent as possible, even with his enemies, giving them the benefit of doubt. Because he has seen it's not always as it seems with people's actions.
Doing all that, through betrayal after betrayal, and seeing horrors at even would break God's. Then somehow remain intact mentally, is more strength than majority of the world's population could ever have.
I find Anduin as a good example of sticking to your principles to the end
Honestly yeah, I’m surprised he hasn’t gone corrupted or went out to become some big bad dude under the pressure of everything around him, One would expect that he’d become destructive of both himself and the people around him.
@@blockedperfection9278
All he has been through doesn't need to turn him into a bad guy, it can simply be giving up on life, in some form or another.
Can be he completely hides away, where no one can find him, without notice, sort of like Thrall did on Outland, but more extreme. Or just end it, in some form or another. Anduin is a strong willed character, for me, done right. Just him actually trying to solve it, by being alone, but letting others know that, is a strong mind. And not pretending he's fine, like nothing wrong happened. How it ruined him, admitting something is wrong is brave and needed.
While also putting himself to the side, because he knows, even if he hasn't fully healed yet, if he ever can heal fully, the world needs him.
Yeah, but his father is proof that you can’t break the cycle through peace not always.
@@TheUnseenPath
If you look at Varian, the only time he got close to breaking the cycle is when he acted more like his son.
Yes it's hard to account for everyone following the plan, and sticking to it. Legion is a good moment to show both sides working together, but through a misunderstanding they broke the truce.
The link for each chain always had a weak spot, but through the expansions it got more refined with stronger parts.
WoW will eventually end with most likely all coming together, and it'll be thank to Anduin being one of the few, who didn't lose hope
welcome to the real world where kindness is mistaken for weakness. double so for women. being the asshole is more respected than being the peacekeeper
As someone who mostly gravitates towards the Horde, I like Anduin, he's kinda like a more strongly willed Arthas (before he became a death knight) in the sense of being a weilder of the light being manipulated then controlled by dark powers. And although Anduin wasn't able to break the grasp of the jailer over him on his own, it seemed like he almost did at a few points, and rejected the immense power it granted him. I don't think he's a crybaby. This dude's been through the wringer several times over, and when called upon to save Azeroth once again, he accepts. Sounds pretty honorable to me.
Same. Always main Horde but Anduin's aight in my book. The contrast between his BFA "Hopeful Noble Hero" cinematic and this "Broken Hero" cinematic is both amazing and sad.
He went from Young Man to Man.
He lost the light because of class change, anduin's a warrior now XD
He's a Warrior? that may explain the depresion
Dam priest to warrior does this next class paladin since what pally in theory priest throw together with warrior trained in combat
He isn't lol...the moment he start believing in himself, the light will come to him
He isn't good in sword anyway, light comes natural to him, and all his lesson from childhood and prophecies will play major role in future
My thoughts exactly.
@@Davew5183 Needs more rage.
All of people taking Anduin for granted. The willpower of this guy covers all of the expansions. No1 can compare.
I always felt Anduin got a bit of a raw deal over how many would rip on him for wanting peace. Here's someone who's gone through how many times Alliance clashed with Horde, not to mention how many outside influences coming in to start crap to where he desperately wants something different and ends up getting put through the wringer despite it all. He's about at his lowest point now from PTSD and Crisis of Faith and I hope he gets to recover and come into himself again.
He led the alliance in the battle for azeroth...
Yeah, he wanted peace but his father was more wise and he knows that sometimes that’s not possible
A wise king should never seek war but always must be prepared for it. Agree playing all the expansions seeing it first hand how it has changed him.
He was a naïve boy, and now he’s matured and understands. That peace requires strength to subjugate, to enforce, but most of all… to understand that being a pacifist is for pussies.
Whats crazy is that he was only 18 years old when he became a King , you cant ask too much to person of that age and the way he almost crying when looking at Thrall you can see he feels horrible for not being able to hold on and keep up and specially that he couldnt resist the influence of death no matter how faithful he was on the light
Alexander the Great was 20 when he rose to power, and he spent the next 10 years conquering the Europe and Asia. Anduin is a fictional character with magic powers... suck it up buttercup.
No he was 30 just like Arthas well Apollonia and Jaina are younger of course
I always liked Anduin, people who hate on him is closeminded imo, a king showing emotion is not 100%bad, it shows that he feels for his people and can understand their pain, maybe more than the kings in the past
I see nothing wrong with being emotional imo. The society is forcing men to suppress emotions, to be tough and suffer inside. But this guy expresses how he feels and its a good thing because this way thrall and others can help him. Its okay to rely on friends and family.
I mean, people really love to complain and criticise everything. They dislike every character, they dislike everything Blizzard does, but well, they're still here. That's 21 century
he grew up, now he looks like a 30 years old men.
now he can be the real deal king, just like his father was
@@RealBullbear Society doesn't "force" men to suppress their emotions, men suppress it themselves. What other people contribute to this is seeing too much emotional behavior as a unreliable man in times of difficulty. Contrary to what many people say, this isn't completely bad per say. Posing a strong will is inspiring to other people to keep fighting whatever they need to.
What it looks to me is actually that men used to be able to be vulnerable in private with their family, almost exclusively with their partner, and they would be able to cry and release stress appropriately, but nowadays we have such a fucked up notion of family that we destroy every manifestation of it everywhere. So many broken homes everywhere could explain why there's so many people like OC described.
Leader must not be a cry baby, it has negative affect on people under him. No leaders cry and whine publicly because thats essientially admission of defeat.
Idk how but they seriously make Anduin look more and more badass with every expansion!!!
easy...actions and experiences are doing a Man
Thank you! I've been telling people that this is a textbook PTSD reaction. The guy has been through some guano and everything about him in that situation screams it if you know what you're looking at. My little brother was a Marine in the 1980s. He did some things, saw some stuff, and to this day still has the haunting memories. I've seen that stare, that over-reaction (seemingly) to things that didn't need that reaction (in anyone elses' mind but his) and the minute I saw Anduin's eyes, I knew. So yeah, great analysis, I just hope the folks realize this isn't the end of that type of reaction and I'm going to be very interested in how they deal with that and the storylines.
If he was held captive and systematicly abused for years i could understand but beeing mindcontrolled for abit does not warrent this state of beeing
@@Marcustheseer It's worse than being "mind-controlled for a bit." He saw everything he was doing and could not stop himself. He was also fused with the soul of Arthas.
@@Marcustheseer The very act of mind control means you have to wrest control from the person. That is abuse. And the stronger the person, the more force that has to be applied. Think about how tough this "kid" was, losing his mom, his dad (twice, three if you count the other half, LoGar coming back and having to fuse. He's not soft by any means even before this attempt, and tears are not weakness, they're an outlet for emotions. Have you ever known someone who got so angry the were going to kill someone, right up until the time and then backed off. All that pent up emotion has to go somewhere, channeled into hitting a brick wall with your fist a few times (breaking the fist, most likely), raging so much at future upsets that you pull the steering wheel off the column in the car (my husband did that back in the day). But some people will handle the emotions by letting them out, a cry. It's not unmanly, it's human, and a damn sight better than beating the first person you can reach.
I felt so sad seeing Anduin like this, Ive always liked him and his character. I thought Varian was a great king, but I also liked Anduin´s way of doing things and thought he would grow to be a great king as well without following his father´s ways. Its just really sad seeing someone who seemed so whole now seem so broken and empty, I hope he is able to rekindle his calling to the light, that he is able to heal and that everything that has happeend to him makes him wiser and as kind as he was, and not bitter and hateful.
Anduin is the great character. Humble and Just
After Sylvanas. Long live the Queen.
Bro skipped an expansion and came back as Stephen Amell. I am so excited for his arc to continue.
It’s no coincidence that he was also missing for five years.
bruh the first thing i thought when i saw this was wtf is that the green arrow playing anduin?! its CGI And it truly looks realistic for once, no uncanny valley, truly thought it was stephen
amell!
Looks closer to Zach Efron.
He had to grind torghast too many times
Torghast can take anyone’s sanity
Anyone that thinks he's a crybaby clearly don't understand what he's actually been through. I rather see a character like this that actually reacts than one that just shrugs it off like it's nothing.
Most interesting story point they'll probably take here is they'll probably use this a an analogy for PTSD that soldiers usually have after killing in war.
They did a fantastic job animating him for that trailer. That's a man with some serious PTSD, and they articulated it well.
Anduin is one of the most developed and human characters in the game. He actually displays emotions. Plus, he is also the only character that we (the gamers) got to grow up with. Everyone else in the lore is already an adult, he’s the only character we’ve got to see grow into an adult from a child, while we grew in our own lives. I think he’s gonna carry the next couple of expansions, the lore has enough bad ass warriors and cool fantasy characters, they can write that up in a day. Anduin doesn’t need to become some Chad, I imagine when he recovers the light he’ll be strong af.
During the Blizzcon, they made an emphasis on the old world and going back to it. I think Anduin is going to recover the light, and use that to mend the world, reverting it back to pre-cata. This will probably make him age rapidly, and by the end of the saga he’s going to be an old man because he used so much of his power.
He was also imprisoned by the dwarfs and a dear woman dwarf died in his arms in Cataclysm. But anyway, this video was so good, explained his story so well, good job.
I have nothing against Anduin, but the writers weren't able to build his burnout properly.
Before SL last cutscene he was more or less ok, and he didn't look broken even when talking to Sylvanas. He looked more conflicted than broken.
However, I think that people is getting tired about personal feeling taking the light spot in WoW narrative.
The dialogue in the cinematic (incredible visuals) is clunky and forced and sound like SW prequel trilogy.
In a real world, not everyone acts or thinks the same, so even without knowing all this background information for Anduin I never thought it was "bad" that he showed emotion. Just because emotions are involved in a story, it doesn't just automatically make the story bad, what makes a story bad is the skill of the writers involved and how they use those emotions to move the story forward and enhance it.
It will be interesting to see if some of major prophecies related to him will come into play in future expansion or not, in short story " Prophet lesson " on wow site, it's talk about velen seeing Anduin leading the army of light along with horde, dragon against darkness, if metzen and others still following that lore, then we know what's coming in so don't be tense, they are just building his story😅
I pity those who do mock the emotions of others. How awful it must be to deny oneself one a key human experience.
He’s a video game character, relax bud.
To me Anduin sure looks a LOT more like he is Arthas' son and not that of Varian.
That was not the look of a cry baby. That is the look of a man who was seen and done horrible things, things that haunt his waking eye, and is rapidly losing the fight to his demons.
I have seen that look many times in PTSD ridden soldiers.
Thrall may have very well saved Anduin's life by finding him just in time.
Daylies in The Maw ruined his mental health 😂🎉
😂😂😂😂😂😂yeah imagine going in and out of the maw 😂😂😂😂😂
What happened? same thing that has happened to every other soldier that's been the the depths of hell and came back.
Just like you and I, Anduin is human. Playing this game for over a decade, there have 100% been zones or moments even I had chills go down my spine. Leveling up in Duskwood, Ghost lands, and Felwood, seeing the horrors inside Naxxramas, seeing peers and heroes get poisoned to death by Forsaken. Now, we just played it. Anduin lived *through* it all.
Shadowlands traumatized all of us. I hated the maw. Stood on that ledge reflecting on my life remembered my near death experience in real life. I faught like there was no tomorrow to recite my pleads prayers and testimony so I don't go to hell on that cold resuscitation table. To jump in hell willingly hurt bad as my worgen hunter in game. But hey how many hunters had mount speed in the maw? I Know how poor Anduin feels man. I live with that guilty ugly past of mine till this day. I need to see him climb out of that bad place and dare to hope again. Just like this old broken soldier did eventually.
being enslaved by a death titan with nipples, an being consciously aware of how you slaughtered innocents…..that is what happened
This is just one of the faces of PTSD, it affects everyone differently and neither of them are good.
Asmogold called him "a little b****". He broke free, man. Arthas didn't. And now Anduin is just... broken. Who wouldn't be? Ffs I have ptsd after that expansion.
The thing about Anduin is... he's not a paladin. He might be wearing plate armor, but it's supposed to represent him stepping into his father's massive shoes. Just look at Varian! Even having lost his armor, he's a huge guy! A warrior through and through, forged in battle. Anduin, however, took after his mother, Tiffin. He learned to wield the light not to use it on the battlefield, but as a healer. Before BFA, he didn't wear armor, he wore cloth robes, ones a medic might wear while rushing between wounded soldiers, or helping at the church to cure the sick. He's always been a kind, compassionate character, sticking to his values to the very end. His whole monologue with Garrosh that ended with him being crushed beneath the Divine Bell was him begging him, giving him one last chance to change, and he basically got told to shut up.
EVERYONE tells him he's soft and weak, canon characters and playerbase alike, but he continues to stick to his principles. Through thick and thin, he's done so. Shadowlands was dogshit, but Anduin waking up to find he'd killed and murdered and corrupted not by his own will had to have been horrible for him to experience. It was like Teldrassil all over. He might not have been the one to kill them, but he was the one who let them die. He didn't fight hard enough.
I'm excited to see where he goes next.
The way I see Anduin now is basically He's gone a huge leap of time in a self-inflicted penance in the Maw after Shadowlands. I mean how can he possibly cope with his actions that even though he was under the influence of Domination, he can't bring himself to forgive what he did. All that psychological trauma the Jailer inflicted on him changed him. Textbook case of PTSD
Did he really attempt to call the Light though? I'm more inclined he refuses to wield the light, because he sees himself unworthy.
Well that's how the connection to the Light works. If he sees himself as unworthy the Light wouldn't respond to him anyway.
@@justinb7494 I don't think that's how it works, but more as the psychological state of the wielder that he can wield the light, is material in wielding the light, and most of the time, those who lose their powers of the Light, often does not wield the Light at all, rather than they're incapable of wielding it. He sees the light as a force of good, and is thus voluntarily inhibiting himself. The justification that Light magic is somehow sentient in choosing its wielders fall into the cracks whenever you see the Scarlet Crusade. The light is just another cosmic force, and the 'sentient' light is either just the whispers of a Naaru, or something similar, or that the Light is exerting its influence on its wielders like the Void, to slowly pull you closer and closer to its side, but nevertheless is actually unable to stop you from wielding Light Magic, since Magic in WoW, seems to be tied to the mana pool, coz if it isn't then logically, priest, and paladins should just be spamming spells.
He truly don’t want to sum the light….the guyz of the scarlet crusade are evils and still got the light …he is goint void priest next exp
@@rachellschezwrong, that's what light about... It's not about good or bad people, light will come for you, if you have conviction in yourself, it doesn't matter what scarlette crusade people were doing

guys, we only suffered for 2 years of shadowlands, he did his 5 years term
It's nice to see some gritty character designs in a franchise where most characters appear immaculate.
side note: I wonder if orcs suffer from dry skin?
His body may have aged, but his soul even more so. It hurts to see the boy-king so tormented. I really don't understand why people would interpret this scene as whingey/crybaby material, this guy is clearly suffering from PTSD. Right before he raises his sword, you can hear the sound blacking out, like Anduin's mind is blacking out, throwing him into survival mode. The artwork is absolutely phenomenal once more. I really wish we could get a WoW movie like this. (With the actual people we meet in the game, not some weird prologue. Henry Cavill as Varian Wrynn, anyone? 😉)
He has grown up. Legend says that when you grow up, your heart dies. Not completely, of course, but in the meaning that you start to face some pretty rough decisions and situations in your life. And it's true.
Whatever else he was doing all those years, he apparently still had time to brush his teeth!
The dude got some PTSD.
I mean, Shadowlands basically mind-rp'd him. No wonder he has PTSD.
As someone who played both hoard and alliance, it's easy as a hoard player to play off anduin as a silver spoon child. You just don't get a good perspective on him as a hoard charecter because it's more focused on the hoard POV. He isn't anduin to them, he is the alliance kings son, the pup to the wolf sp to speak
I think he showed a lot of strength in his restraint to be honest. He definitely had lessons to learn about drawing his line way further out which I believe he's going through now, but he certainly was not weak.
Thanks. I couldn't have put it better. Best!
There is crying … and there is crying.
If you ever see a father cry because he lost his child or a sergeant that lost his platoon… you know some wounds dont heal.
He was fully conscious while under the control of the Jailer. He experienced everything he did under his domination.
Very good opservations, and I agree with the thought about the tragidies piling up around him, in the end "brakes" him, but perhaps also matures him in to what destiny has in mind for him. "What ever that is." That will be the next intersting part to opserve I think. Will he regain control of the power of the light, or will he find new powers, that will obay him instead?
when someone is a kid they are quick to trust people by time people around them shatter their believes to pieces and they turn in to Anduin.
People get PTSD form a Loved One or a Job but they can't stand a Broken man who's entire family got wiped, and spent years in hell lmao WoW Fanbase needs cold showers
There's a problem in the narrazione tecnique: we have seen him face the loss of his family, and deal with it (legion and BFA) and now we have been told that he's seen something that has broken him.
The problem is that it happened offscreen, and in that last SL he was more conflicted than broken, and he made no reference to his losses.
This is why is not easy to empathise with the character: we are not talking about a person we've been talking to, it's a character we get to know everything about through (poor) narration.
@@francescoporcari8597 EXACTLY. I have exactly the same thoughts. Moreover, in real life the injury can actually get worse, but for the story of Blizzard... this is a very bad explanation. Blizzard gave us all hope that with time Anduin would get better. But now they tell us that everything is very bad and we will go to serious therapy together.
Anduin is probably dealing with ptsd and depression on a massive scale
The Jailer Tore is Soul his Apart, I would think he would have some PTSD after that...
Anduin worked for Blizzard... that's what happened to him
When you truely have ptsd like Anduin (not like many "claim" to have in the real world) your world view point would change, and not always in a good way.
Once I saw the color of the Gem, I knew this was going to be part of his journey back. The current color is Red, where it used to be Yellow, while his father had his balance and the gem colored bright orange. Anduin currebntly is so guilty, confused and angry, that Gem is going to stay red for awhile
At some point the cinematic shows the new hair cut Anduin while he was mind controlled in shadowlands, I don’t know why, as he had long hair at that time
I took it as him having difficulty separating the past from the present, he's constantly reliving the horrors of his time being controlled by the Jailor's domination magic & seeing Arthas' memories (it was this soul the Jailor imbued the sword with)

You think there be a story line about the traumatize raiders going to the Shadowlands for riches and glory, then coming back as a changed poeple or even traumatized because everything some believed in was Shattered like Anduin. Like asmon playing a lock 😂
I would love this next expansion, either a side quest or main quest where you help him recover from
The PTSD he got from Shadowlands. It would also allow the devs to expand on the torment he received to allow the player to know the depth of Anduin’s trauma, especially if we did it from his pov with “ghost” Anduin giving dialogue/information.
He went from falling off the titanic to getting stuck on an island and learning the bow.
Seriously though he looked sort of like a young Brad pit but this most recent cinematic has him looking like the dude who played Oliver queen in the CWs Arrow.

he hit puberty
I'm not into lore and I was never an Anduin fan, but dude been through some thangs. He is not ok.
Anduin is the before and after picture of the average player after playing Shadowlands.
I always liked Anduin... It's kinda funny because I was really young myself when I started playing WoW.
I was always like one or two years older than Anduin's canon age. So I kinda saw him growing up with me. I always admired how much he tried to keep peace and tried to talk things out. But in my eyes, it's really a pure miracle that after everything that happened to him over the last few expansions, he didn't lose his mind. Of course, he is broken, after everything. And calling him a cry baby for being how he is now is stupid in my mind.
I just hope people start seeing more in Anduin than just this child king, a lot of people still seem to see in him. He is grown up, he changed, he did and saw things just like we humans in the real world.
I think he saw the truth of what the light is REALLY about and since his whole life he looked to it for answers he is now lost.
Odlican klip! :D
Everyone thinking he's weak because he crys. Terrible way of thinking.
I'm going to need a full explanation on how he isn't aware of the World Soul... like, look, I want to forget BFA happened too, but it did happen... you can't just retcon an entire expansion.
As for what's going to happen to Anduin, I guarantee you it's going to be a 'woe is me' story where he will suddenly in a time of need, call on the light again in some intended 'heroic' moment. They literally took the light away from him so that later he can get it back. That's what Blizzard does, they make problems so they can give the solution later on.
2:25 - Someone compared Anduin taking over Stormwind to when Lenny is put in charge of the Power Plant on the Simpsons and I can't describe it any better than that.
He is known as Oliver Queen now
If you don't know what happened to Anduin by now, You are either New to WoW or you are just not Paying attention at all.
Dude was away 5 years to grow some rizz.
From looking like a young Brad Pitt to old Brad Back from the Pits of Hell
Bro had a worse life than arthas and then was forced to be another lich king but still resisted in the end. Anduin has my respect
