We KX85 Swapped a Harley Davidson | 2 Stroke Harley Davidson SS125 Build!

- We 2 stroke swap a Harley Davidson! My 1976 Harley Davidson SS125 had been sitting abandoned for years when I purchased it, and the original 125cc engine was stuck. We got the engine unstuck, but we had ignition issues and couldn't find replacement parts anywhere! So in today's episode, we're swapping an 85cc 2 stroke dirt bike engine from a 2006 Kawasaki KX85 on the motorcycle. The Harley Davidson was made in Italy by Aermacchi under the ownership of AMF. They were slow from the factory, so this 85cc will be a big upgrade!

Here's a tip I got from an old guy who restores brass era cars and early motorcycles- use regular Pinesol ( not lemon pinesol!) In the tank for a few days and it eats all the rust and will be ready for the tank coating aftrr a wash out and dry. I exclusively use POR-15 tank sealer. It bonds the best and will never peel off!
Ammonia! Pinesol is ammonia. Just the vapors will eat away all kinds of crap but it has to be outside or in a sealed container because the fumes will knock you over. And never mix with bleach products! Rinse thoroughly before the crap dries back onto whatever your cleaning. Ammonia is also the base ingredient in oven cleaners.
Thanks for the tip Ronin. I am working on a V65 Honda that needs both tanks cleaned out and Ill try this method. I just wish it would hold twice as much fuel.
Por15 is awesome. I like that you can weld to it also
Pinesol will also clean dried fuel and clean carburetor too. I use it in a heated ultrasonic cleaner then rinse everything in hot water before drying it.
That works but we always use lye and they always look new inside.
I own 2 SXT 125 Harley dirt bikes 1975 orange and a 1976 black. They aren't the most powerful things lol but fun to ride. The 76 I've had since I was 15 and I'm 46 now and even when I was 15 @100 lbs it was a slow tank but still alot of fun to ride. I've heard of people putting sportster motors in them. The Aromachie motors are Italian and fussy to maintain I can understand a motor swap. The bike itself is mostly True Harley-Davidson though. A cool fact is that the SXT 125 Enduro ,(not to be confused with the SS 125 )was the only Harley-Davidson to come from the manufacturer with a Left side tailpipe. HOPE YOU ENJOYED THIS .
I love the frankensteinism of combining things that shouldn't go together to make a disfigured monster roar to life again
Story of my life brother.
That’s how I was made
A tip from a cross country dirt bike racer, those 85cc engines tend to load up and foul plugs when not risen hard. I don't really recommend trying to use them for street use. You may get lucky and that engine be one that doesn't have that problem, but the small motocross bikes are bad about it. A good 125 is great for lugging around and never fouling a plug, but the 85 will likely need jetted.
Can't ever feel bad about cutting up a frame on something that would have otherwise ended up in a junkyard. You are saving this one which is awesome!
I liked this bike as soon as I seen it. Now with motor swap new tires! It's awesome.
Don't feel bad about cutting the harley, I had one 35 years ago and couldn't get parts for it then so I sold it. Anyone really familiar with these will tell you that it was a POS when it was made and anything to modify it will only improve it. I do respect you guys for originally feeling guilty about cutting up a classic, and its only rare because they didn't sell well and they were not dependable..
So in theory since the factory expansion pipe fits y'all could put a nice stainless fmf on there to broaden the powerband
When I was a teenager I used to have one of those, but mine was the SX175. I never got it running either, and it just needed piston rings, couldn't get any for it, and that was way back in the mid 80's.
I squirted oil in the cylinder and it fired of a couple power strokes once but that's about all I ever got out of it.
cant believe how nice that little motor fits right in there
Keep up the 2 smoke content love the sound of a 2 stroke at WOT!!!
Buy your selves a sandblaster makes restoring things a cake walk.
This bike was From the era that damn near put Harley Davidson out of business.
i grew up at this time ,, aways said i pushed a harley davidson further than i ever rode one,, still not a fan of HD today
"Damn near" ?
They went bust , government bailed them out .
Shouldn't of bothered
Shame they didnt got out of business - shitiest overpriced pieces of trash ever sold.
Japanese knock offs.
@@SamIam420 well... I'm talking about Harleys, tho. 😅🤣
So THIS is what you were welding in the background before mini Mayhem 👏😄
Like a normal Harley but it's faster more reliable and handles better
And it's still burning oil.
@@Just-InTimeRepairs but maybe not leaking lol
@@jeffreymoffitt4070 most likely leakage mitll be fine but definitely leaking after a nice break in it’ll be expected
@@Just-InTimeRepairs eh, fuel additives
That's the usual meme but the Aermacchi engines (the SS was an Aermacchi rebadge tweaked for the US market were decent for that ancient era and has some success racing. Vintage
road and dirt racers run many "Aermacchi-Davidsons" to this day because they work well and vintage racers need machines reliable and simple enough to maintain on a budget. They gobble up most SS stuff at swap meets.
You need to build a frame table to straightening frames, you could use it on other things to.
Derrik at VGG could get at least 700 miles on that back tire
Haha right he could have went way farther with that tire 😂
After he pretended not to see it. LOL
@@baddawg3380 yeah right he never sees anything Wow I love vice grip garage you two cars and camera Great show
Charles looks to be thriving like I am right now. Recently employed to work for a company that you truley love and work on their amazing project with them. Helping to improve the whole process wherever possible. Doing something you love. ❤
This is an awesome and extraordinary build/swap. Love the video guys. Keep up the great work. “It’ll be fine” if something goes wrong these are the guys to fix it. I love y’all’s channel. Go CarsandCameras!!! 🏍️👍👏🤝🏍️
thanks guys -- long time ago I always wanted to put a strong 2 stroke in a Honda Ct 70 frame
With the new engine, the AMF will stand for "Adios Mo Fo!" 😎
What fun you guys have, find something alongside the road, in a shed, or someone “gifts” it to you to get rid of it and you make something fun out of it! Genius!👍🏻😃
Add a guard to the exhaust. I see you guys finding a rock and sending it through the exhaust pipe. Good job on the rest. Keep up the good work.
@ .56 I thought you were gonna say "as fast as it ever should," nice vid, keep em coming. Thank's again.
I've restored old seat pans and rusted out AC housing in old Dodge vans back when they were made of steel using epoxy resin and fiberglass mat. You can even use cardboard as a form to restore the original shape and cover it with the epoxy/mat combination laid up just like one would make a boat. If you clean the rust on that old seat pan it could be restored very nicely using this method.
Looking good. Back when I was young, I had a '69 Baja 125. I believe it was an earlier (and possibly better) model than the AMF labeled ones. I'm not sure when AMF bought Harley, but I think it was 1971 or so. I had no real problem getting parts in the mid to late 70's. I actually left 2 of them in the barn when I moved out of the old family homestead... Now it's a TW200 for this old man :)
I’m hoping y’all make it an even more crazy looking Harley Kawasaki hybrid by using the kx85 ferrings on the front
Then paint it black and green as homage to both companies
Here in the UK, a friend had one of these (a 1976 SX125), back in the early 1980's. Parts for these were non-existent even back then. There's more chance of finding a lawyer in heaven, than finding new parts for these today.
Some idiot will pay over £1000 on e bay for that just look at the money they are making !
If you look on ebay there's full piston kits . Gasket sets . Good cylinders and new cranks and bearings.
New decals New fork seal and sprockets
And tons more New parts
I would have just rebuilt and restored the oem engine worth 10 times more but still a nice build I guess
Glad you brought this bike back, very retro especially with that sticker on the fuel tank, love it
I asked for this and y’all delivered. I love it
What were you thinking? What are they thinking?!
I remember when AMF bought Harley. They either gave you a bowling ball with each bike or if you bought a Ball Bag and shoes they gave you a Sportster!
If you want to avoid headaches down the road, use Caswell 2 part tank sealer and nothing else going forward. POR15, Kreem, Redkote and all/any other 1 part sealers do not hold up and cause more problems than they're worth when they fail, it's harder to deal with failed sealants than it is to deal with any other problems you'd have otherwise.
Another great video guys. This Old Man from Washington NC enjoying. Love you Guys. 🛵🧔💝💝💝
Charles is the best person I have seen .. Lov all 3
I saw an AMF Harley 50cc moped here in Sweden at a local vintage car and bike meet. It looked used and loved at the same time. This however, it's about to be ripped!
Great video y'all, can't wait for the next one!
That's awesome guys! Looks amazing
I'd love to see you going on a road trip with this bad boy!
Never going to happen. Lol
Nicely done on the frame mods!
People need to stop worrying about re-sale value
Probably increase the value
Saw this at Mini Mayhem, super cool project!
hi guys, I've been waiting for this series for a very long time, but during this time I got to know better what you're working on, and even watched some videos of your friends) glad you continued working on this bike! it's a pity that you didn't disassemble the engine for repair, but apparently there were reasons for that! I'm waiting for the continuation, good luck to you!
Love this build can't wait to see the next video on it.
Love when you save the classics.
I love this build.
I don't know why. Can't wait for the hot laps.
I was expecting a drag rail episode but this was a nice refresh y'all. Keep up the good work buds 💪
I'm happy to see you made this video was going to ask about this bike in a previous video the old AMF Harley-Davidson Enduros were always interesting
Brown vinyl for the seat cover!! She is lookin mint!!
You need to put the motor toward the back some the counter sprocket is near the swing arm pivit , or your chain tension will change drastically.
great stuff guys thanks happy turkey day
Putting the kawasaki motor in that AMF, bowling alley bike, just moves it slightly out of the dregs. Can't wait and see how the rest of this goes. Carry on boys, may the wrench be with you.
Looks great, all the best to yous and your loved ones
Our family have always called a hammer a "persuader" ;) x
Heck yeah! This is awesome!
Oooooooh baby!….that bike should rip once you get that machine running. Yee-haw!👍😄 Going to be a whole lotta fun!😊
What was a turkey, will now gobble up the trails.Good job stuffing that engine in so cleanly.I hope everyone has a safe and happy Thanksgiving weekend.
Great Build!
That's freaking awesome rock on
Good build guys
Can't wait for the next installment !!!
Great video!
If Mr.Worldwide was a motorcycle. An Italian Motorcycle with an American brand name and a Japanese engine
Probably some Chinese built parts on there too, all it needs now is some British built parts to piss oil out everywhere and it’ll be mint
@@garageofscrap sounds bout right Lmao 😂
@@garageofscrap it’s a 2 stroke, it already does that. XD
Dangggg that’s a super cool build
Ahh good 2 see yall Ben waiting for the video see yu next Monday
I like the build although I think I would put the radiator under the triple tree
They would get smashed or won't fit
@@ronniewilliz153 if they get a smaller radiator it probably would fit there are many vintage motorcycle that put small radiators there
Put the kx front forks and brakes on it
Johnny gets to ride his Harley soon..yeah!!!
The rear tire thread looks better than the rest of the tire, by a lot !!!
I love this Harley Saki-macchi! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
loving the build, plz don't wait too long to finish the bike
My dad fully restored a aermacchi Harley rapido 125. It’s extremely slow but super cool!
My girlfriend had one. It was awful so far as a rideable bike. The clutch lever was nearly impossible to pull in. Anything you do will be an improvement.
Good job guys. It’ll be fun to see it street legal.
I personally voted for the CT70, but I have to admit now, that KX85 engine on the Harley looks great! 😁👍
The way Charles was saying “scratch scratch” when he was putting in engine and exhaust parts in the frame😂 Also Ike’s segues are smooth and on point👏
It boggles my mind how insane it is that 80cc's can produce so much power for such a small unit. Then added on top of that its a reliable 80s production motor.
Hawa-Sakison
👏😆
Dividsaki
Or davi-saki
Great content love it just like all ur projects bad ass
I really enjoy the Road trip episodes. Those should be done every 2 months would be a treat.
Thanks guys and Happy Thanksgiving
Pretty sweet lookin ride!
This is a real good one!
This thing is gnarly, when I seen it at Busco, I was like, what's that
An exhaust extension is going to be a must on this thing if you value your legs 😂
Very cool bike
It's really cool that you're putting a two-stroke in there that should live in that bike up quite a bit really can't wait to see it fire up for the first time?
Well while everyone is low balling kx 80 and is 85,s on Facebook ect,,this why i have a few, best 2 stroke ever ,super facts
You should try Naval Jelly for cleaning the rust out of gas tanks. Just dump a bunch in there and shake it up on the four wheeler, wait a half hour and wash it out with water. Repeat if it needs a second pass but it should be mostly gone with the first. There's also Evaporust which is dirt cheap and flows smoother but isn't quite as effective from what I've gathered. Both are better than hoping for the best with rocks banging around in there.
My dad said he had a Harley when he was a kid and said it was a terrible trail bike but it was good for tricks. Don’t feel bad about cutting it up
Just so you know dents in the exhaust can really affect horse power and an easy way to get them out is to plug one end then heat the Dent up with a torch and put air in the other end so it balloons it out but be careful not to do too much or it will make a hole.👍
A Japanese engine into an Italian framed roller... Perfect!
Need to figure out how to get some German parts in there, but the frame might be in danger of switching sides mid-race.
HarlyDookieSan? Worthy of the particular brown of the tank!
Hey! I think you guys did the best thing for both the "Harley", and the Kawasaki engine, that's the perfect combination. I was just severely worried you guys were going to put a "2-stroke" in a Trail 70 frame, Thank you for not.... Lol.
I used to have an old Harley dirt bike just like that one.
I have a lil KX80 on my shifter kart. Fun lil ripper
Hey, just received my go or blow keychain. "this sticker" is awesome extra gift thank you. Almost missed the signatures! Appreciate y'all
This thing is going to rip!
I'm not a fan of this. I'm a Harley fan. But, I get that you couldn't find parts for it. What I'd really like to see is a Sportster engine on a Go Kart. THAT would be cool.
I think they should dip the whole bike in a horse trough full of vinegar for 3 hours. Then pressure wash it.
Call it a Harleysaki
@ M Rutherford….good one, I like it👍😉
Aermacchisaki more appropriate. 😄
