- [BlackTree TV - New York] Shawn Edwards sits down with Steve McQueen's "Go To Man", actor Michael Fassbender who gives a moving performance in 12 Years a Slave.
Q: What became of Northup's slave masters -- William Prince Ford, Edwin Epps and Mistress Epps?
William Prince Ford was forced to sell Northup after he experienced financial difficulties The man he sold him to, John M. Tibaut (called Tibeats in Northup's book and in the film) could not afford to pay Northup's full value, so Ford was in a way still a part-owner. This is why Ford was able to prevent Tibaut from murdering Northup. Ford was a prominent Baptist minister, serving several congregations. One of them, the Springhill Baptist Church, expelled him for heresy, partly because he had allowed a Methodist to take communion at the church (an example of his generous spirit). Ford wore several other hats: in addition to operating the lumber mill where Northup worked, Ford manufactured bricks and mattresses.
The woman Ford was married to while Northup was his slave, Martha (Tanner) Ford passed away in 1849, and he got married a second time, to Mary Dawson. Rev. Ford passed away on August 23, 1866 and was buried in a cemetery known as the Old Cheney Cemetery in Cheneyville, Louisiana.
Edwin Epps had wanted to contest Northup's removal from his possession, but his legal counsel advised him that the case was so clear-cut (due to documents presented in court in Marksville, Louisiana, which proved Northup had been born free), that he should simply give up Northup rather than incur pointless legal expenses, and he did so.
Epps gave up drink while Northup was still his slave, since Northup mentions that in his book. Epps continued working his plantation after Northup's departure. The 1860 Federal Census shows that he had assets amounting to over $20,000.
During the Civil War some northern soldiers sought out the Epps plantation as the army worked its way through Louisiana. They found many people, both black and white, who remembered Northup and his fiddle-playing, and they even located Epps. What Northup wrote in his book, Epps told the
33
soldiers, was mostly true, and in a back-handed compliment to Northup he told them that he was an "unusually smart nigger." Epps died on March 3, 1867. His place of burial is uncertain.
The house that Northup and carpenter Samuel Bass worked on for Epps still exists. It has avoided destruction several times, and has also been moved several times. It is now located on the campus of the Louisiana State University at Alexandria, and it has been declared a historic structure.
Mistress Epps, whose maiden name was Mary Robert, became the "Natural Tutrix" (or guardian) of her and her husband's minor children following Epps' death. However she died soon afterward. Many, if not all, of the children left Louisiana and relocated to various places in Texas.
Born in Germany, and raised in Killarney, Ireland, MICHAEL FASSBENDER (Edwin Epps) is a graduate of London's prestigious Drama Centre. His breakthrough role came when he was cast in the epic Steven Spielberg/Tom Hanks production, "Band of Brothers." His big screen debut came with Zack Snyder's hugely successful 300.
Fassbender's performance as Bobby Sands in Steve McQueen's HUNGER won large critical acclaim and, following the film's Camera D'Or winning premiere at Cannes in 2008, Fassbender scooped up numerous international festival awards including the British Independent Film Award (BIFA) and Irish Film & Television Award (IFTA) for 'Best Actor'; a London Film Critics Circle Award; and 'Best Actor' honours from the 2008 Stockholm and Chicago International Film Festivals. He was honoured at the latter festival the following year as 'Best Supporting Actor' for his performance in Andrea Arnold's FISH TANK. The portrayal brought him BIFA and IFTA nominations as well as his second London Film Critics Award. He was also an IFTA nominee for his performance in Marc Munden's miniseries "The Devil's Whore." I know Fassbender probably doesn't see it this way but for me, Fassbender as Epps is one of the greatest villains put on screen. While he did a good job of giving his character dimension, he was really terrifying. No disrespect to Jared Leto but I thought Fassbender deserved the Oscar.
Dallas Buyers Club is a fine film but no way in hell was Leto’s acting better than Fassbender!!!
Yes unbelievable, the two best at what they do bad guys, him and ben
Fassbender was too real. He was actually too real. And Leto is not even in the race for it.
@@sylvesteruchia5263 yeah fuck Leto he’s a dick. I wanted Fassbender to win.
He was so good at his role that if I saw him only God himself could stop me from harming him
Dear lord he is so handsome.
Oh yes.
I just saw the movie and I still have hatred towards him lol.. He is a good actor.
This is certificate that he's best😂😂
That’s proof he did his job as a actor as the real Epps was even worse if that can be possible yet it was .
If it makes u feel justified towards the real Epps and not Michael, .. Epps used to have the slaves lie in the pigs shit while they would count attendance. Messed up
@@elliemccarthy3487 Solomon in his biography called Epps the "Negro Breaker". An utterly horrific human being (if you can even call him that) even amongst slave owners. They made him less cruel in the movie than he actually was.
Omg not gonna lie even though this was a movie, I have mad hatred towards him
I don't think I could watch the movie a second time- I was so disturbed for days, job well done by all the actors - it was just such a heavy reality
Maybe we could watch it together a second time, it might help to watch it with someone who is cross eyed, that why any.intense scene u could just look at me and I'll stick my.tongue and u will laugh lol
+nancy marques Agreed on that. This isn't that type of movie you can watch over and over again. I really needed some time to pull myself together. I watched it, job done indeed. But dear God, I can't bare to watch it a second time :I
It’s important to watch. I’ve watched it 3 times and I’m black.
@@ghosty8210 it’s a heavy movie and reality - I give you props
@@agentcero4364 you truly believe you’re funny huh
when the antagonist in a movie makes you go cold with hatred an desire revenge for such horrific atrocities of an unspeakable nature, that's when you know you have a damn good actor. I love Michael fassbender, I don't know if this movie would have been as powerful without him
Fuck you!
hahaha ok then
Absolutely agree with you.
Daniel S Oh:( You poor slave. You know...you don't have to do everything Massa Hate tells you to do. Those heavy chains of ignorance can be broken if you just stop being primitive.
Daniel S Sssshhh...... I can hear your slave shackles rattling.
Outstanding job!! I hated and feared Epps so much, I felt it in my gut. He was terrifying, a nightmare!! Well done, so well done!!
He should've been awarded an Oscar for that role! True Talent!
Just watched the film a few hours ago. It was brilliant and yet horribly brutal in equal measure. For me, Fassbender's performance was the standout in this film. Exceptional. I hated his guts for an hour lol
i had difficulties with interview after that performance. he did such an amazing job
Michael Fassbender is hot
That was a very miss-placed comment, but yea for sure 😂
+Panther Assassin it's never a misplaced comment to say fassbender is hot 🙂
Exactly. He's fucking sexy......ohhhhh baby lol 😂
+Charlotte's Web --- if you were a famus person, you would have got a lot of criticism because of that comment... Very racist in the wrong context!
Charlotte's Web You're sick to get sexually excited over ANYONE hurting or abusing another human being. Get help, sicko
I think only due to the fact of him playing such a real life evil person that is why they didnt' nominate him for an award. I saw the movie and yes he was wonderful, Chiwetel, Lupita and there were so many of the other people that played Slaves that were wonderful in their roles. That woman whose children were taken away from her should have also received accolades.
4daluvofnikki almost agree with u 100%
Why almost?
BlackTree TV Why Almost?
4daluvofnikki I thought Adepero's performance was not as strong as others. (The woman who lost her baby). Also. Fassbender was nominated for every major award show, he just didn't win.
I could not agree more with your comment. In my opinion the actress you mentioned she gave an outstanding performance even better than Lupita's just amazing!
Michael Fassbender is an amazing actor. Love to you from Scotland Michael
His perfomance was a true masterpiece. Chapeau bas, Mr Fassbender.
I absolutely hated this guy in the movie and I will say plain and straight an absolutely awesome and great actor no lie the way he took on the role was awestriking and even as a black man I love his and all the actors performances
My absolute favorite show is Hannibal--the scene where Hannibal guts one of the other characters.....I can watch that all day, and to be crass--it's almost like I have my own cheering section because I freaking looove that show.......but Michael F. as Epps? I wanted to throw up from the moment I saw him on screen. I literally felt sick, deep in my stomach when he came on. I was cringing away from the screen and I just didn't want to watch. He should've won the Oscar for it.
Fassbender is Fantastic as Epps. I knew him from X-Men First Class and he is starting to become an iconic actor as he continues his film career. Good luck on your next film, Fassbender!!!
Best actor in the film in my opinion. Often the antagonist role is the best played; they make you hate them in the film....brilliant. Lupia deserved an oscar as well, but so did Michael in my opinion.
I'd say that the dynamic of their relationship almost took over the story of Chiwetel's character.
This was one of those movies that was fantastically done yet so disturbing for me to watch. As I watched I kept asking myself - how could these actors portray these evil parts without being mentally beat down by the subject matter. It was as if some part of my own soul was crying out about the injustice, so watching this interview really put the importance of such a role in to perspective. I have the utmost respect for the actors in attacking such a controversial part of our American history.
Interviewer's great. The interviewer didn't feel trying for the sake of entertainment but instead felt natural.
Michael Fassbender is one of the most versatile actors I’ve seen. His filmography is so diverse & his roles were very much different from each other. Most of the time I forget he’s the same actor from another film. That’s how good he is in every role!
Michael did such a good job in making us loathe him in the movie, yet still remember that he's only acting. Bravo!
Amazing Michael's performance on this film!
Epps reminded me of Amon Goeth in Schindler's List. What a terrifying amazing performance.
TL Pricescope yep spot on with that comparison two examples of the worst of humanity
great comparison
That’s what I’ve always said as well. Other villains and insane characters like Hannibal Lecter, Joker, Hans Landa, Patrick Bateman and so on are obviously horrible people, but they still can be quite funny and charming sometimes. You might crack a smile or have a laugh watching them brilliantly outsmart another person, or just them being a bit ridiculous. But Ralph and Michael in their performances, holy shit. It’s just sadism, sadism, sadism and more sadism. You literally can not watch these movies and not feel nervous and sad when they’re on screen. You already know it’s going to be brutal.
@@flavio7180 they're not real ppl. Whereas these were.
@@tahsina.c It’s mostly the acting for me. Even if Amon Goeth never existed, I’d be just as disgusted from this fictional character that Fiennes portrayed.
I just LOVE HIM. He seems so down to earth and there's no pretense.
That is what his co-stars says about him also.
He’s super honest and has no ego. Met him twice now
Michael Fassbender deserves MORE than on Oscar for his performance. All the actors were great esp N'ongo and Chiwetel too but Fassbender was so damn believable. He is going even further after this. Seen a lot if his early work.. Fish tank and Eden Lake two of his earlier roles..you could see where he was going.
He nailed it. Very talented.
Edwin Epps is a Spaniard 🇪🇸
He was English
I love you Michael fassbender!!
Damn! Michael Fassbender is ALWAYS serving best! He definitely deserves an oscar
He will get one
Salute Mike, I love the confidence you had for the role & your ability to pull through and succeed
I have not watched the movie as yet - I am not yet mentally prepared for it.
I was in Rwanda a few days ago and visited "Hotel Milles Collines" in Kigali for a business meeting with a few Rwandans. At the beginning of the meeting mentioned that it is quite significant for me to he at the hotel - knowing it's significance during the genocide. I then asked them if they had watched the movie "Hotel Rwanda" - they all said no. The room suddenly went quiet and i realized I had touched a nerve. One of them politely said, "no need to watch the movie, we lived it". This put me in check.
Well done, indeed, Fassbender, you're amazing!!
Man, he is my favorite actor
One of my favourite actors of all time.
Michael absolutely killed the hell out of this role, such a fantastic actor
i just watched the movie! Michael as epps was so hardcore! i really couldn't tell it was acting i actually felt the wrath he was unleashing on those people! seriously great job! takes a lot of courage to play such roles!
This dude killed it.
honestly micheal fassbender made the movie
They weren’t going to give him the award for playing a racist although he deserved it
Fassbender was probably better educated on the history of American slavery than most Americans are, honestly.
What a fantastic performance... I never once thought to myself.. oh he (or indeed the cast) were "acting"... Oscar possibilities for all three if you asked me.
I have seen this movie 40 times and every time I am overcome by a new emotion.
Personally I think his was the best performance of the year. He reallyyyyyy deserves an Oscar for this. Idk why everyone's talking about Lupita so much. She was great but Fassbender was absolutely brilliant.
I love you Michael. You are a great actor and very handsome man.
Im in love with him♥!
Very nice and handsome :)
By the way, did Fassbender get an award? He deserve on big time. He was brillant in this movie, even better than the main character, in my opinion.
I like him as an actor, too!
Der Film den du mir empfohlen hast werde ich jetzt doch endlich anschauen..- Grüße!
Cool, der gefällt dir bestimmt! Hast du schon Wolf of Wallstreet gesehen?
he still daddy af
😂😂
That just ain't it sis 😣
@KinkyCurlyDiva16 he's a beautiful man (not Epps, but Micheal)
It’s amazing the acting abilities people have
Michael truly is a genius
I love these interviews with a subtle awkwardness
Michael Fassbender is one of my favo actors of all time im so proud hes European!
King Kobi He's Irish
Ireland is in Europe.... lol
stancexpunks glad you can amuse yourself - but take a look at a map sometime - it's not "In Europe" & no one there identifies themselves as "European.."
+james thomas That's like saying if you live on Malta, Sicily, or Corsica, or on one of the thousands of Greek islands, you're not European.
+Joker Guy are you implying that he is a bit of every ethnicity that the EU possesses? irish / german seems sufficient lol
He ATE that role! Killed his southern accent! and on top of that his seems very humble and handsome!
What hit me the hardest was when they were on the market and the black men that were bound in chains and had the facial stuff .. unbelievable. Civilization then was so different. Really hit my soul ... for days ! Outstanding movie !
He shines in this kinda roles
He is the best actor. This movie looks awesome!
Ehum I just finished watching the movie so this this really awkward! I really hated Epps, but Fassbender wow great performance. I really need some time to digest this movie, man I even can't stand Fassbender lol!
amazing actor
hes amazing
This is how you know Micheal Fassbender is a great actor. You utterly dislike him when you watch the movie that you totally forget the kind great man he is in real life.
He was robbed of his Oscar!
Seriously love me some him!!!
¡Muero por su sonrisa !
I had no idea michael fassbender was Irish! He puts on the american accent so well when he's doing movies!
he's even German-Irish-British ;)
*shocked face*
Most irish actors do. Colin Farrell and Cillian Murphy also have a perfect American accent.
Amazing actor, Im surprised he has no Oscar yet
It’s coming
Chiwetel & Fassbender were amazing in this film..
Edit: he should play Batman or Bond.
the way the movie was publicized, it was as if Solomon Northups story was shown on screen for the first time. Solomon Northups Odyssey portrayed the trials of Solomon many years before 12 years a slave. Again a realistic and harrowing portrayal of the lives of slaves and different varieties of slave owners. Fassbender however was terrifying.
Fassbender did a wonderful job I must say. I suppose he knows from Irish history( that some of the Irish were also sold into slavery too. I wont go on about it) and all other forms of slavery from other countries to some extent. The slavery in America is something that was very atrocious and horrifying indeed. I know it might be a bit bad in saying this but I myself haven't really looked into it before watching this film. This movie was very touching, and emotional. It truly is a film that leaves a impact and really makes people understand the horrors of slavery. Not just towards black people but as a whole.
He is fine
michael fassbender is so hot
very hot
Sasha Fierce he s hot af
Lol i noticed that in the movie
Assbender is one hell of a good actor.
fassbender is BEST ..
I just watched this film. About 1 1/2 years after it's been out. Oy. What a movie. It was SO disturbing to watch, on so many levels. The acting was off the page brilliant. But I truly hated Michael Fassbender's character. So much. I can't imagine what he must have gone thru to dig up those emotions. He was so psychopathic. And sadistic! OMG. I agree with what someone wrote below.. I couldn't even look at him right now! Such a sad story. Very well done... but it sure packed a brutal punch.
Please don't harbor any hatred for Michael. He is an actor and is NOT his character. He's actually a really nice guy.
Hey guys - no hatred intended!! Michael is a brilliant actor. Hands down. For him to get me to feel that way about his character? Wow. I think he must be a really nice guy, and well respected among his peers.
The interviewer needs to stop interrupting Michael!
This dude was terrifying in this movie i never knew magneto could be so ruthless
he is one of the best actor in the movie.................role well played.
From Fassbender in 12 Years a Slave to Fiennes in Schindler’s List. We thank our actors who give it their all to bring these monsters to life so we can truly understand how corrupt and evil they were. It must take a lot to put aside your moral conscience to allow yourself to make your performances of such evil hearts come to life.
I love Michael. He is a beast of an actor, just insanely talented. And he's gonna make me HATE him in this film, and only top tier actors can do that! PS. Toronto my hometown whoo! :D
not even black, but my forefathers were kidnapped from the Indonesian Islands for resisting giving up their religion for that of the Dutch and brought to South Africa in the 1600s, we were treated better than the local blacks, but man.... this hits home for so many of us historically.
I feel better that he's Irish, but man I just finished the movie... I don't know if I can really like him yet now because of it
Super awkward interview, I know why he gave up that seat to the movie... it's not why he said
one thing i loved about edwin epps was the beard and he was played by mike
fassbender's an oscar lock after that performance, place your bets now and thank me later
get the fuck out of here dipshit!
Damn it Humbert, I lost everything.
he should win oscar for supporting role
Wish the interviewer would stop interrupting him.
He is a great actor I was so angry watching him it was like it was a real thing
Why would you say that? did you experience the real thing?
I favorably compare his Edwin Epps character and performance to Ralph Fiennes' Amon Goeth from 'Schindler's List'.
If a movie makes u personally not like the actor you kno they did a good job 😂
Just saying, but everyone (me included) is here in need to see this guy out of his character because his performance was so good it seems crazy that he is not actually like that
He is ridiculously good looking wow
I cannot look at him the same way
Omg he goes from heart throb Edward Rochester in Jane Eyre where I just wanna kiss him to Epps the mean bastard. Man he is hot. X
I don't think Michael saw it a second time, he was just asking questions to make the interviewer uncomfortable, but it failed obviously. lol
He made you hate his character. And That's what makes him great. Even Leonardo in said he had a hard time making DJango but he was able to pull it off with the same reaction from the viewers.
He takes villanous roles though that makes people anger more, he has a guts to do that. From a villain, into a greedy hot-headed CEO, to a slavemaster, to a trevrep, etc.
What movie in which he played greedy hot headed CEO??
That whipping of Patsy was horrifying! That comment about his property was hunting!
He was fantastic in this movie. He was sadistic. And his obsession with Patsy was crazy. I wonder what it was that him crazy obsessed with her. Its like he loved and hated her all at once.
Chiwetel Ejiofor and Michael Fassbender made an magnificent acting. Btw both are Europeans.
Killer looks
I loved and hated him!! Loved looking at him and wishfully thinking
Wishfully imagining I was in his arms but not to be beaten though!! Lol!!!
This is a fantastic film. But I still preferred Shame.
Why have you come back again to say that? What's the point
I wonder how the spirits on the plantation felt about this
Everyone acted their ASS OFF yo
I let my children watch it; albeit, being based on a true story. We read a lot of Alex Haley's books and watched Roots, Queen, Belle, Harriet, Amistad, and other historical movies/books. I'm glad that we talk about these hard truths, especially before 2023, while these works of art are being banned across America. Definitely upsetting, but it is important to know history, American history. Tulsa, Black Wall Street, Rosewood, Emmitt Till, Fredrick Douglass, Langston Hughes, Malcolm X,......And the list goes on and on and on. Black Americians have a right to be learned about, despite how people feel about slavery or the civil rights period. This is history, NOT CRITICAL RACE THEORY! Young adults learn CRT in college, if they choose to. Thank you.
He's like Ralph Fiennes as Amon Goertg
Is it weird that I'm a guy and Michael Fassbender make me blush.
Fassbander is really hot, but i love how he did his character so scary that we didnt romanticize it (there's nothing to romanticize, but you know how everyone roots for villains sometimes even if they're fucked up) , in this case he legit just was terrifying and i just wanted him to pay
yes i agree. he is a great actor. i love how they didn't try to use his good looks to romanticize his character in the movie by painting epps as a cruel person but with kind or romantic tendencies or something, or like a soft side, instead we saw him frequently disheveled, raging, abusive and drunk like the disgusting person he is.
