Daniels Mill (Shropshire) 10.06.15

Daniels Mill is a working water mill used for milling flour, located near Bridgnorth in the English county of Shropshire. The mill has the largest cast iron waterwheel in England, spanning a 38 feet (12 m) diameter.
The present mill worked until 1957 grinding all kinds of grain for animal feed, but ceased operation upon the death of the miller, who is the present owner's father. After a great deal of restoration work, the mill was re-opened in 2008.

Amazing mill, such a pity its not being used as a mill, the skill of running these great machines is slowly dying out. At least its being preserved.

Does anyone know whether, in the U.K., if your garden backs onto a river, are you allowed to construct a waterwheel there? Or, is there some typically British arrangement like… all river banks belong to the third male offspring of only the female line of the Duke of Ibmondsely?

Of course there are laws in England or Europe, which roots are since roman times. In the UK, I think these are the laws pertaining to water and waterways. Better ask your muncioal administration, how its handled locally at your place. Especially after Brexit, before that, it was and is regulated by the EU. I can only speak for germany, here are strict rules and also the right to build a wheel and for fishing can be a entail withhin the familiy. So in case of my family. Problem is we have the right here, but the stream dried out decades ago and there is no water 🙂. If you have not these rights, at least in germany it is a long and costly legal proces to get these from the muncipal administration 😞
