My ECU was playing dead!

  • When replacing the upper ground strap on my 2009 BMW 328 (N52) I didn't notice that the main grounding point for the ECU also runs to the same grounding point in the engine bay. The cable fell off when I removed the upper ground strap and so my ECU stopped getting power.
    If your car appears to be turning on, cranks but won't start, attempts to crank, and your fuel pump appears to be running continuously it may be that your ECU is not turning on.
    I could tell there was a problem at the ECU because when I scanned the car other modules were getting power however the ECU was not responding.
    This is a 2009 BMW 328xi Touring with the N52 Engine running the MSV80 DMW (ECU).
    If you're in the Greater Toronto Area and have any issues with your ECU / DME give Russ a shout, he is a legend and spent two hours working on my car only to realize that I'm the idiot that left the grounding cable.

    OMG man thank you!!!!!! I just spent $1000 and three days fixing up a cheap 328xi I bought and when I go to start it....this happens. I remembered I took those wires loose to do the valve cover and couldn’t remember how they went and had no communication with the ECU with my scan tool. Hooked up the wires like you showed and BOOM BABY! Again thank you thank you!!!!

    I dont get why you dont have more suscribers, I actually really like your channel. My car has a similar no start issue, it cranks now but i noticed when i tried to jump start it the front positive terminal post did not spark. Also, blower motor failed and caused a short. Car is currently parked and has a severe power draw, kind of losing my shit trying to figure out how to get it to crank. Your video was the closest ive seen to my exact issue!
    Please let me know anything you can think of that i can check, i would really appreciate it!

      @rackintosh  Před 4 lety

      Carlos Reyes my channel is fairly new and I haven’t been uploading as often as I’d like.
      If no spark at the positive your power distribution block in the engine bay could be fried.
      I’m not great with electrical.
      You may need to find someone local to give you a hand.
      Best of luck!

    Bro, in regards to your smoke issue, if it’s not your valve cover gasket leaking, check that your PCV on the valve cover is not busted and working correctly. That problem will lead to all kinds of oil filling into your intake manifold. How did the old manifold look when you removed it? Cheers for the video. Really like your honest video logs.

      @rackintosh  Před 4 lety

      Asim Khan whelp, it’s been a year since I n54 swapped it and I did the swap because I thought I blew the engine. Turns out the manifold was in fact full of oil.

    anymore exhaust videos? I am thinking about doing a PE mod to my 328ix.

    • @rackintosh
      @rackintosh  Před 5 lety +1

      FatalNukeZ there are a ton of videos on the PE mod... I’ll be doing something a little different with the wagon.
      For your car if it’s a coupe then it’ll have an x-pipe in place of a resonator and will pair very nicely with a PE-mod.
      If you have a sedan or wagon then you’ll have a resonator and you can do a resonator delete which will definitely give you some more tone.
      I’ve found the PE is great for getting a more aggressive sound without too much drone. Definitely worth the added cost over a muffler delete.

    • @rackintosh
      @rackintosh  Před 2 lety +1

      Is it the radio or the amplifier?
      If the radio unit doesn’t power on at all you’ve probably missed a fuse.
      If it’s on but you don’t have sound your amplifier in the trunk could be fried.
      Best of luck!

      @rackintosh  Před rokem

    BMW E91 320D M47. Tried jump starting the car in -26C. Since then ECU has been dead with no communication when scanning for codes. Cant find any bad relays or fuses. Help me, its been over 6 months now since it last started. Fuel pump is constantly going when ignition is turned on as well. Ecu box looks pristine on the inside.

    • @rackintosh
      @rackintosh  Před 2 měsíci

      Sometimes when you jump the car (especially if you jump off the battery and not the posts in the engine bay) you can fry the CAS or FRM modules.
      Try scanning the car and see which modules aren’t responding.
      You’ll probably have to pull them and take them to someone to get them repaired / cloned.
      Hope this helps!

      There’s is a mofset failure common to the n54 ecu. That could be the issue.
