- In 1986, AVIA Communications launched its integrated marketing communications campaign "The Beauty of the Philippines - Shining Through" via television spot placements in PAL's key overseas markets. This was supported by an intensive print ad campaign as well as posters, brochures and other point of purchase materials in travel agencies, Philippine embassies and consulates and other channels. The beauty of the campaign could also be seen in the awards it reaped both locally and internationally. It was a finalist in the TV advertising and jingle category of the CLIO Awards, considered the 'Oscars' of the advertising industry.

The best Philippine Airline commercial and jingle. One of the best commercials in the Philippines. It never failed to give me goosebumps and shivers. Perfectly done. The lyrics, the musicality, the direction, the cinematography and concept we're all in point. It digs the Filipino pride in me.
I am with the Director of this advertisement right now. He, Dr Trevor walked us thru the whole commercial! What an honor!

Whenever I feel homesick, I just watch this ad. It's nostalgic and speaks what the Philippines truly is. I've been living abroad for nearly 3 decades now. Gone are the days when everything was simple.
This song should have been revived, instead of the new song from Sarah, Lea, and Bamboo in my very humble opinion. Mas feel ko ang pagka Pilipino sa kantang ito.
hindi na kasi "shining through" yung catch phrase nila e... heart of the Filipino na yata or something - so the connection would be lost kasi shining through yung theme nung song.. but i totally agree with you. i would always wait for this commercial on the TV when i was a kid.

Oh so true. Whenever I feel homesick, I just watch this ad. This is the epitome of what the Philippines truly is.
I've been living away from Pinas for nearly 3 decades now and there are times when I feel homesick. But there's nothing much to go back to anymore. My mom's gone, my lola's my brothers have their own families, my cousins are away, our neighbors have migrated to US, our helpers are gone... Basically, all I have are just memories to reminisce.
This ad reminds me of my elementary years. They were the years of simplicity, pure joy and love.

My first trip to the Philippines was in July of 1989 for my 4th birthday when I met my mum's side of the family for the first time. It's something that I have not forgotten. Since then I have travelled back a further 5 times, most recently in Jan-Feb of 2011. The Philippines is my eternal second home and I can assure you the Philippines shines through my heart. :)
This commercial reminds me of the era where Philippine Airlines is one of the leading carriers in the world... even topped cathay, singapore, and all other carriers that boomed lately.. such a waste for an airline which made filipinos proud for a while. :(

Oo. This commercial does the same to me. This reminds me of my childhood and the beauty of our country. Naiiyak din ako. There's something beautiful and very patriotic about this ad. Kaya siguro I love sunsets and sunrises kasi this ad has an excellent cinematography. I've been living abroad for nearly 2 decades now. Where I am is beautiful but I still miss Pinas.

I note this promotion also happened a few months after the Philippine Revolution that toppled Ferdinand Marcos, and his family from power, an event praised around the world, because it was bloodless, and historically unprecedented. With everything Filipino having the touch of gold now, (to encourage them foreign investment was at an all time high) did Philippine Airlines capitalize on this new interest, thinking it was now time for a brand new global promotion? I remember the ad in Australia very well in 1986 and as I've said elsewhere, the theme song "Shining Through" is my favourite one of all time, in an airline TV advertisement. They did themselves very proud.
