🔷 ABOUT US 🔷
We're a DIY family building our "forever homestead" from 15 acres of raw undeveloped land in Tennessee. All of our content is family friendly and safe for everyone to enjoy.
In today's video we begin building our new front deck on our 1988 Palm Harbor single wide mobile home! We are building a wooden cantilever deck that is free standing and does not attach to the mobile home. The final dimensions of the deck will be 7 feet wide by 7 feet long. This kind of deck is also called post and beam. Today's video covers the deck footer digging, deck foundation cement pouring, setting deck posts, building a deck beam, and framing the deck joists for the floor with double rim joists. It also includes the various Simpson Strong-Tie hardware to make this deck code compliant to pass inspection. Let's go!

One of the things I like about this channel is the authenticity. At the 6 minute mark there are sandals, crocs, using a level to consolidate the mud, a truck bed trailer, and a broken shovel for mixing. Not a bunch of staged, faked, or otherwise pretentious content. Just working to get stuff done.
You go right ahead & put out a 4 hour long video. That just means it's time for popcorn- I know we'll all watch it- and learn that much more. We loves y'all.
Mr Sam & Ms Angela just got to say Love to see Free range kids having fun Outside!! Deck looks great!!
Lol! My hubby heard Sam say, " you can tell someone you know stuff, you watch Sam and Angela"! Hubby looked at me said, " you've been saying that for the last 6 months, almost everyday"! And just laughed!🤣 Funny part is, it's the truth!🤦😂Have learned a lot from y'all! Would have never got my wiring moved if it weren't for y'all! Thanks for sharing your knowledge, your wonderful personalities and such a great disposition!
Aww, we're so happy to hear that! It's always such a pleasure to hear our videos are helping people in reality. :)
@@sam-and-angela Helping!? Y'all are about to kill me!! That ol' saying, "if you don't know nothing, then you don't have to do nothing", is so true! Now that I know how to do wiring, drop in junction boxes and put light switches and plug ins where ever I want, I went crazy! But after y'all help me past that, I have got my second wind, a helper and we knocked it out of the ball park rhese past 3 weeks!! Angela, I'm definitely ready for that pot of pintos and a big pan of fried taters!!😄
Your oldest boy looks like a teenager on the go-cart. Good looking boys. Great job as always! Bless you all.
He sure does! :)
Love hearing the children in the background. They are so happy, at the end of the day that us what is all about. On the home front so happy to see you are a “step” closer to get into your home. God bless.
I actually enjoy seeing the boys playing outside like normal kids.
@US A I know! Right!? When my brother and I were kids, we got outside and stayed until it was dark! Mom would flash the porch light off and on....if we weren't in seconds after the third time, we would be in trouble!!😂 Dodging bath time or having to much fun, I'm not sure which it was!🤣
Tear it up boys. I did too and then I transitioned to a Yamaha 125. They will love it there. Those children will be a generation of intelligence young men. SEEING THEIR MOM AND DAD AS A TEAM.
LOL, i love your bloopers. The smiles on your lads while driving that go cart is precious.
These are the times you'll cherish for years to come...you guys are awesome and bring joy to us. Not to mention Sams humor is truly a fun time..
LOVE SEEING & HEARING THE BOYS HAVING FUN…
MAKES THIS GRAMMYS HEART HAPPY 🥰👍
GOD BLESS FROM WEST CENTRAL INDIANA FARMLAND ✝️🇺🇸🤗🚜
Love the deck! The bloopers are hilarious! The boys look like that have grown a foot! Tennessee agrees with y’all. One step closer to getting moved in! ❤️❤️❤️😂😂😂😂
So glad you enjoy them! The boys are seeming to grow daily now, too!
What a great couple, you work so well together, out-takes are hilarious.
Thanks!
I would like to save you some trouble later. Any level is a persicion instrument even inexpensive ones. However if the rails are not true because you rammed it into rocks or concrete it won't read true or be a straight edge. Do yourself a favor and punch out the vials and use it for a straight edge. And get yourself a new one. You and your wife are doing a good job don't cause yourself a problem by trusting you shouldn't. And next time remember they are fragile. Hope you enjoy your first BBQ on there soon.
@@johnson8950 Good morning, my brother and I framed houses for 12 years, (installed vinyl siding, vinyl windows, built decks) and that was something he was very particular about. He would not lean one against the wall and when I did and it fell, I had to replace it. He said they were very fragile and should not be banged around. I gasped when I saw Sam using it for a tamp! My brother would have kicked my behind! I figured since that was decades ago and that now they make them better. But I still treat mine with special care. Never leaning or setting it on anything where it may fall just because that was the way he trained me on the job.
That completed deck you haven’t completed yet looks (or will) great! 👍🏼🤣 Love the American flag straw hat! 🇺🇸
I love learning something new from you guys, and hammering in a time lapse always makes me laugh 😂 and the outtakes too.
Glad you enjoyed it
I love your beautiful work boots Angela, I never ever seen any boots with beautifully manicured, blue painted toes on them before. 😉🙃😉🙃😉😀
I could watch any length videos you make. Enjoy them very much!
Oh my gosh I loved my go cart!!!! Just a prequel to dirt bikes!!❤️love your channel!!
I LOVE THAT GO CART !!!!...............and your porch-deck looks fantabulous !!
I'm glad you said 'goat' ...i legit thought someone screamed and thought 'dang, sam and angela are pretty chill about that scream'. 🤣 'future sam and angela', great job on the deck. It looks fantastic...and that sucker won't ever blow/wash away! Big storm coming? just strap yourself to the deck! 👍👍 And, as usual, the bloopers had me in hysterics. One more thing off your to-do list!
Checking for the crown is so important. You wouldn't believe how many horizontal 2X4s were put in with the crown on the bottom in my neighbors fence. It's even dragging the pickets out of line. We have the ugly side facing us so now I know what fencing company to never use.
So much closer, each and every day, more and more progress.
You are doing an awesome job as usual and I do believe the boys have grown so much since you have been in Tennessee! Blessings for your family and living life to the fullest 💕
Thank you so much!
Your bloopers always give me a good chuckle! Good progress on your deck!
I love hearing and watching the boys play!
Keep checking to see what's going on, lol
Hope you all are able to gets some cool air.
Sam and Angela, I'm asking my favorite channels if you all would help 'Empty Hammock ' a boost over there.
Hard workers and nice folks.
They're in process of remodeling a large house for resale.
Barry and his dad Bill along with family are doing really nice work.
Whoever buys this house will be able to see all the detail they've done
No cover ups on their work .
Thanks in advance.
Your home is looking super nice.
I just love ❤️ this channel! You two crack me up!!!
My nieces and nephew LOVED their go cart. Totally worth the investment! My advice (from experience) is to have them wear ear protection. The engine on yours seems as loud as ours was.
What a great grandpa! Can’t wait to see the new deck!!
My favorite thing in these videos is SSS...
Super
Sam
Speed
;) If only we all could work that fast in real life. Lol 😅😅😅
You’re wrong! I could totally handle a 4 hr video! I LOVE YOU GUYS!!!
Hello Sam & Angela & Boys, Well Porch is Coming Along Nicely!❤(end result back their looks Super, not that I'm looking🤣🤣) What a PawPaw, those Boys are having a Ball !!❤❤ Your bloopers could be a Show of there own🤣🤣 GOD BLESS AND LOVE TO ALL, SEE YA NEXT TIME!!
I was just getting settled in cozy and comfy when the video was over
Sending so many well wishes from Beaverton Oregon. You both are awesome!!!!!!
Just so you know, I would watch a 4 hour video happily 😊
The boys look like they are having a blast with their new go-cart. I chuckled when you said their grandfather got it for them. That's what grandparents do spoil em rotten.
Aww summer, a go cart and wide open spaces make happy kids! ❤️
Sure does!
Nice deck! Love that hat. Looking forward to bloopers 😆
Great job guys, the boys should have fun time on the go kart.
I’m trying to not peek behind you 👀🙄🤣. But it’s looking so good!!!!
How nice for the boys to have a go-cart …. But Grandpa needs to gift Mom and Dad some earplugs !! 🤣🤣🤣
😘❤️❤️😘
😁
Very cool about the boys having a go cart now! And my grandfather on my mother's side - we called him "Papaw" too. He had a farm in Leitchfield, KY. I love the fact that we can see the finished product in the background too! I'm still going to watch all of the vidoes! Looks good so far!
From Breckinridge Co Ky. About 30 miles from Leitchfield Ky
Oh, me too! Still gonna watch the next video!😁
And from what I could see ....it looks amazing!😍
i am not to Awfully far from their..I think any way..lol. i also called mine papaw & mamaw ..the both have ben gone for 25-30 years & i still miss them both & think about them every day even after all those years But (They Raised me) pretty much !
Yes I get to build our back porch ourselves. And save some money. Love you both. Thank you for teaching me how to do this.
Happy to help!
I started watching this last night, but was too tired, so I'm watching now during a 2 hour layover in Atlanta.
Hey from Texas. We watch your videos most times during supper. Love following the progress since before the roof was redone. You two are great together, beautiful family, and praise to God for decent videos.
We watch 2 homesteaders and 5 full-time rv'ers. We are retired now and moved further out into the country in Northeast Texas.
Finally got watch this on Tuesday, I fell asleep last night... sorry!
Like the go cart.
Both of you can come and build a deck for me. Only I want a floating deck. Awesome job!
I learned a lot good thing for your boys it gets them outside
Great use of a level. Lol. Porch turned out very nice. Great job.
Looking good!!!!!!! The boys look like they are having fun with the go-cart.
I know stuff....Sam and Angela are the best teachers.
I know you did a great job on the deck we can't see. Can't wait to see it! Lol! Love to watch you two working together. ❤️
Thank you! 🤗
Hi folks. You two are a fun couple. Love that you are always happy. Blessings 💕🙏🏻
Nice surprise to see you on Monday! I always look forward to the next episode!
WOwwwwwww as i see in the background a fully formed set of stairs superbbbbb, it has to feel so good to be able to get in with out a ladder .
Great job and video!, that's a great idea for letting everyone know that the Simpson brackets can be used with the accompanied screws instead of the nails !!, I was hoping that you would have a larger front porch deck for room to have seating outside, also, hoping you planned for a porch awning roof in the near future
Our back deck will be larger and the real entertaining space. :) No one to drive by and see us! LOL
@@sam-and-angela oh, ok, just wondering if you would sit on the front porch and watch the cars go by ! Lol 😆
So the old man and I are new to your channel. So far enjoying it. The old man says next time, put some glue between your boards, it will add a lot of strength, and then drive your nails in at 45-degree angles so that sort of cross. He said this will make it near impossible for them to come out. We look forward to seeing how you do things.
Looking forward to the video when you put a roof on.
I thought they put a roof on in North Carolina?
Hi Sam Angela & Boys, saw your deck & it looks awesome!Another great video. The boys have so much fun at their new home.Have a wonderful week! 🌷🌷🌷🌷
I love how the two of you work together. I need a Sam of my own.
I watch Sam and Angela and stayed at the holiday Inn. I know stuff.
That is one sturdy deck! 👏🏼👍🏼💪🏼👊🏼
Fun times for the kids 💙💙
THATS A NICE FRONT PORCH!!!! Love ❤️ you guys a million!!
I start watching to learn how to do something, but watch to the end for the bloopers…….they’re the BEST!!! 👍🏼👍🏼
Great job. once again!! You two are amazing. I am so excited when I see a new video pop up. It won't be long now until you will be moved out of the RV and into your new home. I'm so happy for you. God continues to bless you and your family every step of the way.
You do indeed work well together, which makes me think why aren't you working together in your small businesses. And maybe I have answered the question already. But on the deck side of things, I can't even imagine what it will look like. Can't wait for the reveal. As always keep up the great work. You are indeed the Incredibles.
What makes you say we aren't working together?
@@sam-and-angela I think you do work well together. And it's demonstrated in everything you have done on the house. You are a fantastic team. I just think maybe because you also have your time where you can work on your specific projects like the candles and the wood working you have found the perfect balance. Now all you need to do is bottle that and it is one more business for you. Keep up the great team work. Your videos remind me of everything that is good in this world. We need more of that. We need more Angela and Sams in the world
And the other side of this coin is that I am the king of assumptions. I can make assumptions as far as the eye can see. My wife loves it, one of my most endearing features. I am a keeper for sure
It's all coming together so nicely, I enjoy your videos❤️. Oh, I love Sam's hat, very patriotic 🇺🇸🇺🇸
porch is looking really nice! boys look like they are really enjoying the go cart they both growing way to fast.
Absolutely love you both. Been watching from the beginning and you both are the most genuine couple on CZcams. Keep going please xxx
That porch is gonna be super sturdy! LOVE IT!!
The porch/deck looks great! I like the number seven also. 😊
I need to redo my back deck but there’s no way I can handle an auger. I would be spinning around on top like a kid on a sit and spin. I need someone I can pay to ride it for me lol. Im so loving watching each thing get done. I will be celebrating when the juice gets turned on and you move back in. This turned out so beautiful. Dry set, do you mean adding the water to the cement in the hole? If so it does as long as you have the correct ratios. Dry cement will suck moisture from the dirt around it. But old school lovers resistant to change will always argue.
They are not hard to use but if you hit a strong root they can jerk on you. Otherwise you would be surprised how easy they are. If you have two people it is even easier. One on each side of the auger.
Love the videos. We've been watching for a long time now. Just bought just over 2 acres and about do clear it to build phase 1 of a barndominium. Due to us having at least 20-25 years on y'all, and a few health issues we, we can't do as much 'hands on' work anymore. We enjoy your willingness to put in the time/effort. I have to say, as one who has built decks, boat docks & piers for years, that is the most usual foundation for a deck I've ever seen. But, hey, if it works, (which it should) that's all that matters. Keep up the good work. Can't wait to see the finished product. Y'all won't know what to do once you get to that point!
Go cart! And all that land! Those boys are living the life! 😁
And I liked “I know stuff. I watch Sam and Angela”. That sounds like a great tag line.
Looking forward to part 2!
Cracked up all over again over Angela's vodka just thinking about it!!! I will never forget it! NEVER!
Hehehehe
I love the visual. I am very visual or visual learner. Hey I know stuff I watch Sam and Angela. Lol
I knew exactly what that sound in the background was! I know two boys who in heaven on earth.
We live in a 1998 Palm Harbor double wide. I like to say double wide cause it gives me class. Wife says I don’t have any. We do have regular home electrical boxes and we have 6” exterior walls but some of the things you’ve uncovered scare me. Love your channel. You guys rock.
Well hello Mr. Fancy Pants!! :) Palrm Harbor DOUBLE WIDE!!! LOL Sounds like yours is well built -- 2x6 walls are awesome!
Loved the new little front porch entrance. But, living with the same on my side porch. I would find it more practical to make it 3x the size. If you have 1 or 2 chairs w a tiny table, it leaves no room to walk or stand. Very nice strong job.
This is not our entertaining space, it is an entryway into the front of the home. We're very happy with the large size.
Hey, wait a minute!!! I've been watching your videos but I do not recall the instillation of the skirting. Did you cover this at all and I missed it? Or is that something you have not yet posted a video about? I was totally shocked to see it was up and would like to know more. Thanks
I think I remember hearing them say they have several videos to do and will do them a little out of order to show a complete project rather than skipping back and forth. Caught me off guard as well.
You missed it😝
There was something about they contracted masons to put a more solid, air tight brick wall structure instead of standard vinyl skirting usually found around the bottom of mobile homes
Me too
They mentioned not filming it because they hired it done and didn't want to put cameras in the faces of the guys doing it.
Another awesome project!! The boys are definitely having fun.
Future project. Shocks on the go cart. 😀
I just went back to the boy's bedroom video from a year ago and Man have the Boys grown ! I'm sure they'll feel like they've gotten their new room all over again once you get to move back in!! I can't wait!
Y'all got me hooked! I'm excited for when you're moving in!
Yay! Us too!
I forgot to mention that I once had that same Paslode. I got rid of it and the other Paslode finish nailer because I picked them up one too many times and they were out of gas. They lose gas when just sitting around. Get a good battery operated one.
You guys know how to do it all. Love watching, learn a lot, Angela has learned a lot, putting fans up,not many ladies can do that,my daughter can two of them, one’s an architect so I enjoy watching. You two. Work so great together, love the boy’s. GOD’S BLESSINGS.
Nice job yall!!✌💚🙏🤗
Love the porch! Amazing job
Looks very nice! Great job Sam and Angela! Nice go-cart boys have lot's of fun be safe!!
I never knew that thing with the little bubbles was used that way
Hi love your boys looks like thay
Are having a blast with the cart 😄😍😍😍😍xxxx
Hi Sam & Angela
From what I could see behind you the deck looks great.
I see Sam is another one of those people who multi -use tools.
That's the first time I saw a level used for poking concrete. But if it works, why not.
I think Angela tried hammering with a drill one time. She would probably tell you. You use whatcha got.
The place is looking better all the time.
Wishing you the best
Stay strong and safe
The level was just laying there, not being a team player so I blew the whistle and told it to get some skin in the game! No worries, it got a good cold shower afterwards and is cleaned up for leveling again... or concrete... never know! :)
Ich freue mich auf jedes neue Video und ausserdem habt Ihr wirklich wunderbare Söhne.
Really appreciate your explanations as to why you do things - very clear to understand!
I beg to differ I would watch you guys all day 😃 your just down to earth kinda people love your channel I also have a single wide trailer and with your renovations on yours I have been able to use the same thx so much 😊
Love the H a t ! 🥰
Looks great! Very strog construction there you did Sam. I personally would have made it bigger but Looks great anyways!
Love the deck and the boys on their go cart! The multiple trips to the hardware store is so familiar-when my husband starts a building project it means no less than 5 trips to the store!
So true!
You forgot the one new tool that is "essential" to complete the job, in addition to all the trips to the hardware store!
Hi guys. Another informative one in the books. Stay safe and cool on these HOT days.
Thanks, you too!
