In an interview to mark the launch of his recently published book ‘Anger Management: The Troubled Diplomatic Relationship between India and Pakistan’, which contains a critical chapter on the Pulwama terrorist attack and India’s retaliatory strike on Balakot, India’s High Commissioner to Pakistan at the time, Ajay Bisaria, has accepted that we only have narratives but no proof of the success of the Balakot strike. He added “you’ll perhaps never know for sure” of how successful the strike was.

Karan had come with an agenda. The agenda is exactly what Pakistani position is. He tried to argue that (1) Indian government was responsible for Pulwama, not the Pakistani terrorists, (2) questioned the effectiveness of Balakot strike, (3) claimed that Pakistan might not have panicked and it was India that might have panicked during captivity of Abhinandan. These were answered by Ajay Bisaria very succinctly when he stated that there might have been five variables that could have influenced the course of events and the variables he identified as crucial was based on his assessment and his experience. Mr Thapar tried to focus on variables that would give credit to other entities such as Pakistan/ USA/ others and not to the Indian government or its agencies. In absence of concrete evidences ( or authority to share such evidences) it becomes a "I think vs you think" conversation and to that extent this interview was ineffective.

A good interview, Mr. Thapar like always. I am amazed at how blatantly Mr. Bisaria can dodge reality and your logical questions. The author must check the facts; you only report or write under your name, especially as a diplomatic official, which Mr. Bisaria still needs to do in his book. I am shocked to know the type of training and grooming of the Indian diplomates who have no integrity at all to follow the universal protocols of being honest and truthful professionals. Mr. Bisaria's expression and what the USA and Canadians have raised with the Government of India shows the lapses in the Indian diplomates training, calibre, ethics and Delhi's inability to select, train and send its diplomatic core professionals overseas in the essential places like in the USA, Canada and the arch-rival Pakistan.
India can save itself from the embarrassment of Balakot and assassination plots in foreign capitals by following a foreign policy it deserves to have as a five thousand-year-old civilization and the most populous country in the world, 1400 million people.

@@hj2711 I have a different opinion about Mr. Jaishankar and his handling of Foreign Affairs. No Communique after the G20 in India is just a recent example. India does not have a very good reputation outside India in terms of proxies and destabilizing activities from Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Nepal to Pakistan. India R&AW have been sponsoring anti-state actors in all these countries, the recent US and Canadian démarche in connection to plotting and executing plots to kill their citizens, the EU Info Lab findings, and many more Indian misadventures I cannot name here. The 2016 so-called; " Surgical Strike" was a shame for a country like India, and I am sure you must also be feeling some shame about your Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Internal Affairs and South Block's embarrassing and self-defeating narrative based on lies. Introspection is the right way of forwarding for the Indian citizens, who have the power to rein in Mr Modi and his incompetent team members, like Mr. Jaishankar, Mr Ajit Doval, Mr Rajnath Singh and Mr Amit Shah. India has a vibrant tradition of producing some of the finest statesmen, like Dr. AmbedKer, Dr. Singh, Mr. Narsima Rao, Mr. Wajpiee, Dr. Azad and many more; Dr. Tharoor is one more good example in your current parliament.

As for reports that casualties in Pulwama could not have been substantial as they would sooner or later have been reported by social media, the same was true of India's claim that around three hundred Pakistani "terrorists" were killed. What happened to their funerals which similarly could not have been kept secret for long if at all? Needless to say the first casualty of war is the truth. Karan: very disappointed with the level of evidence Mr. Basaria has relied upon to write his book. He can be credited for his loyalty to India, but when he claims to be an impartial analyst, his claim does not stick.
Pakistan was very hospitable to W.C. Abhinandan and returned him with courtesy and dignity. Everyone these days has a cell phone and his capture was recorded by one or more private cell phones, the recording/s later shared on social media, unsurprisingly. But for a seasoned diplomat to accuse Pakistan of violation of Geneva convention and then mumble when you challenged him, did not reflect well on Mr. Basaria at all.
I would pass on his book for he was not very forthright in his responses to you. He would be better off writing a book on nationalism, rather than a challenging and difficult topic that he picked.
    Great interview again. Thank you.

Karan I’ve been listening to your interviews for the four to five years even those that have do with India’s internal politics of which know very little but yet one would listen because your quest are unremitting and honest to the extent that Modi started crying half way through the interview, however, this character is a mealy mouthed baboo who is perhaps scared and/or angling for a post retirement sinecure in the government… I am wondering why did he even write a book in the first place? Every question that you ask him reading from his darn book, he either completely refutes it or simply says he meant something else and that something else he can’t explain to save his life. On the Balakot strike where it is now common knowledge that India crossed over in the dead of the night and completely either missed the target or was nervously only recording the fact for the international consumption that they did cross over and decimated the target, an utter comedic fib, because the coordinates the IAF cited were provided to the international journalist on the GPS who went there to see the damage if any for themselves. The next day the PAF responded in broad day light and rammed forward brigade head quarter and then fired a controlled missile at a target where the then Indian Army Chief was busy in a meeting, the pilot turned the missile at the last moment towards an ammo dump instead, just to make a point that it’s not difficult to send a chilling response and then they shoot down two of IAF’s fighters including that of Abhinandan Varthaman. Now this high commissioner is gleaning all those statements that are music to the Indian government’s ears but paradoxically dismisses other even from the official sources. Come on karan, it’s a fair and square dominance of the PAF and a more than a bloody nose for India and its aspiration of conducting surgical strike inside Pakistan…just see how Midi used that botched up strike in the elections but never dared to toy with the idea of a surgical strike. Karan this man didn’t deserve a seat at least at your interview table and we wish him good luck with his penchant for fiction writing but certainly not material for a Karan Thapar interview. Best
