  • Continuing on with the AKG Perception series, and this time we are sitting down to compare the AKG P220 to the P120.
See how it stacks up, and where are the differences?
Is it just the fact that you get a shockmount, or is there more to the two mics?

Hello, can you tell me how the P120 reacts in an untreated room in terms of reverberation / echo (if you shout or sing loudly for example). I have a strong hesitation between the P120 and the Shure SM58 (intended rather for the stage), it is the problem of the reverberation which makes me hesitate (for recording vocals and rap)

Hello! I am writing using a translator because I come from Russia, I hope it will be clear :) I choose between P120 and p220, I tested p120 with a friend, I record guitar and vocals in an ordinary apartment, I didn't like p120 because of dirty high frequencies, in particular the guitar rang too much. Is it worth overpaying and taking p220? Will it be better in this regard? How is he doing with the upper frequencies?

Hey man. Good review. I am looking to upgrade (on a budget) from a usb mic to an xlr condenser and I wanted to run two questions by you. 1. Can you get a professional-quality sound with the AKG P120 recording vocals for music/ doing voiceovers? 2. Between the AKG P220 and AT2035 which would you recommend for recording mainly vocals and some acoustic guitar?

      RE: P170.
Here in Aussie, the price difference between the two microphones reviewed herein is much bigger and as a career pro musician nearing retirement, I must be consciously aware of $$$. I have used the P170 for recording my flute playing. Compared to a Rode NT5 which I also had at the time, the P170 was a bit less precise, I'd use the term "wooly". It is also a bit softer sounding, hence my wool. The Rode NT5 is brutally honest, is a much better microphone for fine details but it can occasionally sound hard and clinical. The P170 doesn't give that kind of detail however it's very acceptable as an instrument microphone and I liked it for certain kinds of songs. It is miles ahead of some other cheap Chinese SDCs I've tried and moved on from. I also have a Rode NT1 to compare it to. The P170 is not as dark as the NT1, nor is it as clear but again, it's completely fine for home recording instruments. I have not tried recording anything other than my instrument so I'm really only helpful for giving the relative personalities of the mics. If I was to have a P170 and nothing else, I'd be able to make some lovely sounds with it and since selling it on, I've missed it and always kept tabs on the local used market to try and get another one. Good luck with your recordings.
