  • Two years ago Pioneer DJ released the DDJ-FLX6, a 4 deck controller for Serato DJ Pro and Rekordbox aimed at the premium end of the home DJ market. Now they're giving it a refresh for 2022, with the new GT version featuring a different colour scheme, improved jog wheels and more software support. First started DJing with an NS6 back in 2012 or so, since then I've moved to a DVS set up. Wouldn't have started DJing in the first place if there wasn't a low price option due to the proliferation of controllers, opened my eyes to a whole different world of creativity in music.

You may want to get a direct box if you're playing in different places. Even though you aren't having any issues connecting to different systems, that's not always the case. You may definitely run into a problem with a system, and it won't work. If you plug into a system that only excepts balanced inputs, your controller won't work. Balanced and single ended operation are not compatible. You can't mix them. You either take steps to make both pieces balanced, or both single ended. That's what a DI box if for. It takes the single ended signal that comes from you controller and converts it to balanced.

Im still starting as a DJ but grew up with vinyl around the house as a kid. My mom would always watch me like a hawk when i swapped records but overtime she came around on me using her stuff.
I never THOUGHT I'd go to using just controllers or a going digital until i used my friends X1800 and acompanied sc5000's but that was when the light bulb turned on.

The only thing pioneer does for the last 10 years is selling you exactly the same gear over and over again. After denon dropped prime4 and sc5-6000s everyone was looking at pioneer's next move. And they won't let you down! No innovation whatsoever. Zero. None. The only thing that changes in these reviews is how slim sir Mojaxx has become. Good job, man!

I'd taken a break from dj'ing for years and in 2009 I bought a 2nd hand set of stanton turntables and serato and slowly got back into mixing at home/ A couple years after that my wife asked me to dj a halloween house party they were having and decided to buy a controller and settled with a Numark Mixtrack pro when serato support came out for it. Always wanted to upgrade it and almost bought a vestax vci-400 but I didn't and stuck with my mixtrack pro for years and did loads of gigs with it,mixed a dance show for a commercial radio station I was working for at the time too even took it to a couple of club gigs (got some looks but still rocked the dancefloor!). It lasted me for about 5-6 years until the jogs started to fail and finally became unusable. I upgraded to a pioneer XDJ-R1 (one of the last all in one units) which I still use today for gigs

Allen & Heath Xone:DX was the first controller I bought that I thought, holly shit this does everything my CDJ-800's do and I don't need 30-mintues to run RCA's/SoundCard if using ITCH and so on. Before that all the other controllers kind of felt like toys. Definitely ahead of it's time. First controller I had was a Behringer BCD 3000, back in 2007 whilst living in London. It was one of the only controllers available at the time (except maybe the VCI-100), and I didn't have DJ gear at my flat (as it was all back in NZ). Was super cheap, but ran Traktor no worries, and did me really well for a while as something to jam on. The VCI-300 was the first controller that really made me see the potential (those jog wheels are still my favourite jog wheels for scratching). My mate had an Allen & Heath Xone DX, and that thing was fun to play on. My all time favourite though, for size, built quality, decent sound, was my Denon MC 6000. That thing was a beast, and was great as it was the first one that I used that you could use turntables with.

Growing up in an era when controllers were becoming the defacto standard for beginners I can say that there were 2 devices that got me hooked up and it so happens that I owned them.
The first one being actually my very first piece of DJ gear was the Numark Mixtrack Quad, a really cheap way to get started and have 4 decks to boot was extremely nice and it served me for 3 years quite well, idk what’s up with that device, I may be inclined to track it down and have it as a piece or collection/hall of fame.

Must admit that I've never been comfortable enough with a laptop i can afford to use it for DJing, & certainly not out & about. As whilst this is $650 you also need the forethought of getting a laptop capable of running not only the software but recording & streaming capabilities too, as won't be long until you're wanting to do that and suddenly the £450 laptop you bought 8 months ago is now no longer giving you what you need. So unless I had a high end Windows laptop or Mac - which significantly increases the overall price for fresh new DJ's - then I wouldn't trust a controller set up and so have to confess i've never used a controller. My friend has a Mixstream Pro & i've used that and it's fantastic.
But then a £1k Laptop & this unit cost less than a Pioneer XDJ-RX3 so..............

Hi, I read that the DDJ-FLX6-GT's output sound quality is very poor. Even on a home sound system it sucks they say. I have an old pioneer DDJ-SX and a Roland DJ-202 mini controller and the difference in sound quality is significant. With the Roland the lows don't punch and are muddy, the mids are flat and the highs are flimsy and galling.
The problem I have is that someone poured his drink over the DDJ-SX and now it activates and deactivates loops and the output volume changes constantly. I would love to get a DDJ-1000 but since I don't have 1.5k sitting around this is not an option. So now, I'm thinking of getting an old controller 2nd hand but I don't want a DDJ-SX again.Ideally the one I'm looking for is smaller and lighter but with comparable sound quality as I occasionally play at private after parties and have to bring my gear.
Which 4 channel controller would you recommend?

Overpriced Pioneer junk, just with a can of new spray paint. Still crappy MergeFX, no XLR/TRS, tiny pitch faders, Mic not routed to the PC, etc... --> Denon for the win.
