  • Consulting forester and Indiana Land Specialist Rob Haubry explains why post harvest timber stand improvement is a great way to help regenerate native hardwood species in a timber stand. Not only does it allow the native hardwoods to regenerate, it allows native forbs and other herbaceous species to grow - providing excellent food and cover for deer, turkey and many other wildlife species.

Great information, I have areas that are full of young beech trees. Most are 2 or 3 inches around. Would you just cut and spray? Or cut and remove most of them? Thanks

Cut and spray the stumps so that you don't have any re-sprouting. Don't worry about removing the trees you cut, just leave them lay. Thanks for watching!

I've started this about a week ago ( still not done ) but I'm doing 1 acre spots. I have done others spot in the past none looks anywhere as good as yours ? I even clean up the fell trees too ( brush piles ) , Don't know if that helps or not ?

It could just be the specific site that you're implementing these on as to why they might not look as good. In our specific example we would say 80%+ of the canopy was removed from the logging operation. Then the remainder of the mid story shade tolerant trees (mainly beech and soft maple) were removed. Allowing tons of sunlight to get to the forest floor. Either way letting sunlight into your forest should increase cover and browse in the timber! Keep up the good work!
