  • Dr. Craig Harper goes through a live demonstration on implementing forest stand improvement on a 1 acre block of timber specifically to improve whitetail deer habitat. He explains his decisions on which method he implements based on tree species, size, food/cover value, and the predetermined goal of the land owner. With an objective, a little knowledge, sweat and time, you can drastically improve the forest stand on your property for deer, turkey and other wildlife species.

    I love this mans knowledge of timber management, whitetail improvements and whether it’s Food trees, cover or both. Southern timber management improvement Videos on you tube are hard to find compared to northern states improvements. We don’t have aspen stands or red osier dogwood cover down here. We have acres and acres of pines, hardwood deserts, and grown up fields of small trees just like in this video. This is the perfect scenario for southern states. Thank you sir!

      We're glad you found it helpful! Dr. Harper is an incredible wealth of knowledge and we're happy to have him on our team! We will be doing a live seminar in a few weeks specifically on improving timber stands for whitetail deer - which should be very in depth. Stay tuned!
      Also, leave any questions you might have in our comment section and we will try our best to cover them during the seminar!

    i love seeing the walk thru video! not trying to be greedy but would love another one or 2 on the live walk thru and having to make the decisions on what to cut, what to girdle, kill etc on the fly as you are going thru. 8 acres in a day is getting it!

    What are some of the species that you would stump cut for sprouts versus girdle or cut and spray to terminate? Thanks for your helpful videos.

      Red and white oaks are two of the primary hardwood species that deer prefer to browse, while blackgum, hickory, and yellow poplar are also very high on the preference list. As you move north, species like maple (red and sugar), white ash, and basswood become more preferred species where they are more abundant.

    Would you fell or spray a large number of shag ark hickory? Removed many on a logging job but have a section of them less than 10 inch but pretty tall.

    • @Whitetail_Properties
      @Whitetail_Properties  Před 2 lety +1

      You could do a combination of both. Possibly spray and leave some of the bigger ones standing and fell the smaller ones…

    Will trees sprout whenever you cut them during the year, or is it best to get them to stump sprout by cutting them in winter or dormant season?

    • @Whitetail_Properties
      @Whitetail_Properties  Před 3 lety +1

      If you cut a tree early enough in the growing season it will most likely sprout that year. However, cutting them in the winter or dormant season will ensure sprouting the following growing season.

      @@Whitetail_Properties Not all trees/stumps sprout I've noticed too. Even same species at times. I have alot of hard/soft Maple - some stumps sprout others not. Any explanation for that? They normally all get cut in winter or early spring so - timing has been similar./ Thanks
