  • In this video we share our secret for installing tubeless tires with a floor pump. We've been using this trick for over 10 years and are always surprised that more people don't know about it. It works on mountain bike, road and gravel tires and doesn't require any special tools. And it's a life-saver for difficult rim/tire combos!

This method is a lifesaver, I had spent nearly 2 hours of trying to pump up my rear tire with a small-ish floor pump, and I wasn't having any luck at all. I was about to go to the shop until I stumbled across this video, I seated half of the tire with my tire lever, pumped as hard as I could and BANG the other half seated like magic. If anyone is wondering whether to try it, trust me it works unlike many other tubeless installation videos. Thanks a lot to both of you.

Outstanding! I've always struggled getting tires inflated after unseating the tire beads either removing one side of a tire to fill it with Stans or today replacing entire tires with new ones. Your trick of using the tire irons to get the bead in place and removing the valve stems totally worked. What normally would have been a frustrating day turned into a fun 20 min.

Tubeless works so well, its nice to see a guide for the average rider at home! I set my tubeless system up with tubes for a couple weeks, before my sealant arrived. After I removed the tube and added the sealant and stem, I was able to seat the bead with a floor pump first try, front and rear! Having that tube in there to help shape the tire and bead to the rim seems to have helped quite a bit! The tire lever trick looks like a great way to dodge having a tube in there for weeks! Sometimes the tire needs to get mounted immediately!

O.M.G.!!! I was so skeptical, AND, not wanting to have to have a compressor. I thought there was no way my 59 year-old, super-abused and arthritic CMC and thumb joints could do this. BUT, worth a try! Once I figured out to go just little bits at a time with the lever during the pre-seating, all the struggle was over! The beads on my 27.5 Maxxis seated with maybe 30 pumps on the Joe Blow. Holy Cow - life changing! THANK YOU!!!

  • @roberthill3380

I just had to drop a comment to tell you both that this trick saved my ass. I fit some new Rene Herse Switchback Hills on my tourer since my old SBH's had run out of life, and while the old tires went up easily and without problem, the new ones were simply too loose to inflate. CO2, my tubeless chamber pump, nothing would seat them. I tried ratchet straps, I tried soapy water, I threw another layer of tape on the wheels. No dice. I tried this trick and it took me a couple of times to get the hang of it, but once I did it went up perfectly and easily. Went to the next wheel, nailed it first try. Thanks for the extremely clear and well shot video.
To anyone having issues with this trick, if your tires' beads are super difficult to get around all the way, the critical part is ensuring that you have both sides of the bead at the valve core well seated. I was able to get by with only about 8 inches of bead on both sides of the rim and then hit it with my floor pump and it popped right on.

My trick that I discovered by accident is to pump a bunch of "foamy hand soap" (brand doesn't matter) between the rim and bead around the entire wheel before you start pumping. The bubbles and foamy soap create a bit more "airtight-ness" while you are pumping and you don't need to be as sensitive about where the bead is on the rim - plus it's slippery. Warning: When the bead finally seats, "POW!" - foam will fly everywhere. It's actually kinda fun. Try it - you'll be surprised.

    • @marcg611
      @marcg611 Před 3 lety +1

Yup this is how I do mine.. helps lubricate to aid getting tire on and helps seal the bead. Years ago I worked at a auto tire shop, each mounting machine has a bottle of soapy water lube to lube bead and prevents tearing the bead.👍

OMG what a lifesaver! I have a compressor and have used it to seat tires on rims several times - no problem. I just got new rims and I could not for the life of me get the tires to seat. This video just happened to be at the top of my suggested vids list when I got on to see if I could find some help. It took me a couple of tries to get the balance between getting enough of the bean manually seated and going too far and having it slip back in the channel but I finally got enough manually seated, hit it with the compressor and got the BANG, BANG of a fully seated tire.
Thanks so much for this. I really like this channel BTW. Very down to earth and unpretentious. Well done.

This is totally working! Thank you for amazing video and tips, it worked the first time on both wheels! :-) With tire tool that I have it was very difficult to pull the tire, it slips off. So tried and noticed that if you manage to seat the tire 20cm around the valve on both sides it's enough to inflate it. I guess top priority is to seal around the valve so that it doesn't bleed out right away.

That's a great trick - it accomplishes the Bead Seating on the Rim Bead Bench (Syd&Macky TM ;) completely on side of the tire!

If your tires are tight, install a tube, put the wheel in a hot car or out in the sun. Thermal expansion does its thing and the tire stretches a bit. Now seat your tire WITHOUT sealant. Make sure it holds air for at least 15 minutes for reliability BEFORE you put the sealant in through the valve. .
KNOW that some tires simply don't work on some rims due to manufacturing tolerances. Reality just is.
Avoid WTB, nice treads, BUT their quality is inconsistent, suspect and not worth the price. We
see more issues and return with WTB than any other brand we sell. I only sell them to my customers
who insist. There are lots of tires actually worth their price!

@@rollinrat4850 agree with the WTB tires, even when you get it seated, with sealant, the sidewalls are thin and seep

@@EVM-YT Haha, Ive seen that with the non Tubeless tires I set up way back when tubeless was a DIY thing! I see that lots with WTB now. It makes a nasty mess. Their tires often fit real loose or really tight and show issues trying to get them to bead up and or seal. I Also see wobbly casings a lot. I see it with the better brands much much more rarely.
If WTBs cost maybe 1/3 less I might cut them some slack. They're not cheap, but the quality is.
