  • Come along as we explore a new dispersed camping area near Forest Lakes, Arizona in the beautiful White Mountain Rim country. Rim Road is located about 30 miles east of Payson, Arizona along highway 260. Look for the exit south of the highway and go about one mile back to find the best dispersed camping in the area. Close to both Willow Springs Lake as well as the small cabin community of Forest Lakes, there is abundant hiking, fishing and Kayaking in this area as well as ATV trails to explore!

    I really like how you have the map and drone interspersed with the driving. It allows the viewer to get an orientation and feel for the area. It also gives you a feel for the road conditions and how far you are from the main HWY.
    Cheers,
    Kevin

    for some reason this is the one place in Arizona where a thunderstorm can roll in out of nowhere. we have learned to keep ponchos in our backpack while hiking up on the rim.

    My son was camping in that area last March. Needless to say, it was cold. He woke up to a loud crashing in the brush. Out came a wild horse.

      Oh my goodness, yes there are wild horses in the area all over in fact. We never had any issues with them just left them alone - except they drove our dogs crazy! They keep the Elk away too - Elk can also sneak around your camp at night as well. I guess on the plus side, the bears will stay away if horses are around 😉

    Watching this at my campsite on FR 9512, off of Young Rd. Been up here for a few days and I also checked out the Rim Rd where you camped. I call that the Black Canyon Rd. Some excellent sites there! Also 7700 feet so even a few degrees cooler than Forest Lakes! You're right, gas has always been higher at the station there in Forest Lakes. Not now! $4.49 a gallon, same as Payson and Heber. Best cell signal by far there where you camped! Enjoying your travels around the state!

      Wow, that's surprising! Our in-laws are still up there somewhere, they didn't want to come back until it cools down lol! Wish we could go back up tomorrow! Thanks for watching, enjoy!

    Just went up to Woods Canyon Lake this past weekend (first weekend of summer). Crowded, noisy. Generators running along the lake and boomboxes blasting out music. I was looking for a little peace and beauty. Didn’t find it there.

      Sorry to hear about that - I know how it feels! I really love the area and the Lake - but when it get crowded up there it can be a madhouse sometimes, they are suppose to have noise rules about the generators I thought? Maybe that's at night, daytime is different I know. The crowds are why we love to get back a little ways and disperse camp on the forest roads, picking spots that are more private and secluded. Even so, they can get crowded too. At least it's cooler than here in the valley right now, even with all that I'd still choose it over being here...

      It’s Heber, Arizona. (He-burr) a cute little place along the highway probably about 2-3,000 people there.

      I remember hearing about that, I was in high school in Tucson when that happened - all we ever heard was Snowflake area. My folks use to camp up here all the time too!

    How do you know if the spots are free or if you need to pay?

    • @HolidayForTwo42
      @HolidayForTwo42  Před 2 měsíci

      If you have to pay, there will be signage that will tell you it’s a fee area and price will be posted. Official Campgrounds will also have a host, or hosts at the entrance to collect fees as well as tables, fire pits and restrooms etc. otherwise, most camp areas along FR300 are free / dispersed camp areas with no services.
