  • I got home from ICAST 2023 and couldn't wait to get a bend in my new custom ‪@BatsonEnterprises‬ Rainshadow Eternity RX10 custom jig rod by Rellek Custom Rods on the Susquehanna River. I only had a few hours to test this rod and a bunch of new baits, but the smallmouth wasted none of my time eating my ‪@ZManFishingProducts‬ BatWingZ tipped skirted punch weight.

    What a beautiful smallmouth! Look at those prominent vertical stripes! 👍

      He was the biggest on that particular short trip.

    Tons of wild celery everywhere! You can see the leaves floating all over the place.

    That was a great fish. Yeppers, definetly setting that trap. Looking forward to the rod building videos. Thanks for all you Jeff. Much appreciated. 3%er

    One of my favorite presentations for river smallies is a 1/8oz jig and craw combo and having a good rod makes it successful. Unfortunately mine broke. Maybe another custom down the road in the future.

      The next build, a medium light fast should complement these two rods well. I’ll have medium heavy, medium and soon medium light.

    There are advantages to a stouter rod with bigger single hooks. You get a little more room for error on hooksets. And more power to torque those fish in.

      I picked up more of those smaller sized flippin hooks when I stopped by a really good tackle shop near Akron, Ohio called Fisherman’s Central. That set up with the skirted punch weight is so automatic!

    Always amazed to see your deadsticking skills, that's very instructive. However, I still have a hard time reproducing it on the water. I'm confused about what's the best way to let the boat sit still like you do. I tend to drop the anchor too often, which is both noisy and time consuming. The next option is to rely more on the motor as you seem to do, but I have a 401 which is rather noisy too… Maybe I should get back to use my paddle more and work harder to develop my paddling skills ? What do you think?
    By the way, your happiness at 3:30 is one of the best moments in your channel. 👍 Thanks for sharing.

      You can lower the anchor slowly. It’s quiet.
      I wasn’t sure how that rod would compare to the Loomis NRX+ or the St. Croix Legend Xtreme. To get that confirmation that it’s better is well, happy.

    REALLY interested in seeing your walkthrough of the custom process- it is somewhat intimidating to a newb to this type of fishing. Always willing to do more research and learning. I appreciate you doing what you do. What size spinner did you pair with that one?

    • @TheLittleStuff
      @TheLittleStuff  Před rokem +1

      The two next builds are a medium light fast spinning rod and a medium heavy moderate fast baitcaster. I returned from a business trip to see that everything but the two blanks arrived. I’ll be setting up a workspace soon!

    For you on a major river, even in an eddy like at 5:45, does dead sticking a jig like that mean that the current is still making it tumble slowly along? It seems that with my lighter jigs my braided main line going with the current would drag the lure sometimes, but I may be wrong. My sense for current and its effects isn't so keen.

    • @TheLittleStuff
      @TheLittleStuff  Před rokem +1

      It was stopped, but the claws on the trailer were still wiggling. I can feel if it’s moving. Feeling the bite is easier without the constant sensation of the jig tumbling along. You focus on that solid connection to the bottom, then when you either feel a distinct tap, or the hard connection to the bottom becomes a soft, floating connection, you know it’s in a fish’s mouth and need to set the hook.

    Have you found any lighter punch weights? Are the 3:8 too much in the shallow water?

    • @TheLittleStuff
      @TheLittleStuff  Před rokem +1

      3/8th oz is fine. I’ve been looking for lighter ones, but the 3/8th oz ones make it easy to feel everything. Also, with the long, cylindrical shape, as opposed to a larger lead round shape, that weight parts the jaw bones of a fish easier, leading to really solid hook ups. I bought more of the smaller (size 1) flippin hooks on a recent trip to a very nice tackle shop in Ohio called Fisherman’s Central. Those hooks hold them really well. Part of it is that the weight slides up the line instead of stays attached to the hook shank, functioning as a hammer head to swing and leverage the hook out of the hole as the fish swings its head or jumps.

      @@TheLittleStuff I wish now that I would've paid a little more for a Ballistic when I bought my Tatula. Very similar reels, but the Ballistic has some sealing that is useful.
