That's honestly savage. A lot of people just can't let go of something they're best at. Especially in chess where most world champion hold their titles for more than a decade yet here's magnus just letting it go and seems done with it(in a good way).
No it’s just called quitting, chess isn’t easy.
I totally understand, honestly. Chess fans deserve a competition between candidates who are trying their best -- if your heart isn't in it, I don't see how you could come away feeling like you've truly honored the spirit of the WCC
It's happened before. In the 1700s the top chess player quit because he literally destroyed everyone even top players at the time.

The irony being that he's been in contention with Gary for greatest player of all time and one more world championship would have probably been the tipping point in solidifying his place. I think hes getting rusty and he would rather pretend like hes too good to care anymore than actually be defeated by another contender.
@@user-tw4kt8du9t I firmly disagree. World Chanpion status has to do with who was around at the time. Carlsen is over Kasporov because Carlsen has the highest ever rating. Kasparov didn't have to face Nepo, or Cauruana, or Ding. But even still Carlsen could win another championship. He simply doesn't get the hype of playing against one person 10 times. That's like playing 10 superbowls to decide an NFL championship. Chess should have more vairety than a 1v1 for so many rounds
@@arogueburrito Im not going to jump around on this topic. Based on your logic, if someone is world champion once and peaks higher than gary once, then he can quit and call himself the best of all time? I don't find that to be sufficient. It doesn't take away from that accomplishment but it doesnt let you make that claim. Also its literally not about superbowls or championships in any sport... dude... we are talking about individuals. There have been lots of people in history who have quickly peaked and then taper off. They are not considered the best of all time. Brilliant yes. but best ever... no. Being the best ever... you cant just "beat" gary in elo and call it a day. You have to prove that you did more than him. We know that players today are much better than those that preceded them but it doesn't give you carte blanche to barely beat gary in elo and say you are securely in the front seat. I agree to with Carlsen's reasons for dropping out, it makes sense with him basically being like I've done it, I've been champion for a decade and I kind of want to live my life and just have fun, still play chess but no competitive world championship. One thing though that bothers me is people who are saying this current Ding Vs. Ian is not a real world championship because Magnus isn't there. The contenders can't help that magnus stepped down and they've put a lot of hard work to reaching where they are at, and to say that whichever one wins is not really world champion is disrespectful imo, they've trained like crazy and honestly might beat magnus right now in classical because they have prepped and magnus hasn't. Just my opinion I don't like the hate towards this current championship
Yeah I agree, hopefully the current WCC will be suspenseful so people stop complaining 🙏
I already accept that who ever wins this world championship will the next world champion (wow crazy) but to me magnus will always be the final boss. that lurks beyond the horizon.
As many people said, world champion in chess is not necessarily the best player in the world. When Kramnik beat Kasparov, Kasparov was the highest rated player in the world, but Kramink was world champion.
Well he reached the top and had to stop and that's what's a botherin' him. He wants to be like you man cubs and stroll right into town. Not play chess with serious Ness, so why must you all frown. Shee do be do....... woo woo woo....
Exactly, so nicely put.
I find myself recalling an interview of an older Bobby Fischer, and he was saying he hated chess. The interviewer reacted with disbelief, but he was probably not pulling anybody's leg. The amount of prep you have to do for these games is incredible. I've always wondered if he'd have liked it more or less in the age of Stockfish.
Yeah I saw that interview too somewhere, I will make it a Short and post it soon 😊
No need to wonder. He hates chess engines and said as much (he only died in 2008). Prep and ability to deeply prep with engines "discovering" optimal play for you were his biggest irk. I think he (and even Magnus at times, maybe more than halfway seriously) have suggested that Fischer random is the true way to play chess.
@@andersj91 can you explain this a bit more for us laymen? What is Fischer random?
@@AA-wb6qz it is a variant of chess in which the order of the pieces on the back rank are completely randomized every game. This results in purely intuitive chess games that cannot be feasibly prepped for.
@@andersj91 Interesting. I never saw him talking about engines but I can totally believe what you're saying. I guess everybody's introduction to Fischer random was brief history of what Fischer found frustrating about the game. And we see Magnus having the same frustrations.
I believe he also wanted for the format to change. Right now, if you are the WC, you don't need to play candidates and just wait for some challenger and defend your title. He wanted for the WC to also be included in candidates every year and top 1 and 2 should be the one playing the WC match.
I completely understand him, many people have the exact same feelings about their everyday work situation.
No, you dont. And they dont either. Youre the best at nothing. You cannot say a single thing that you are the best in the world at. Dont compare yourself. Strive to be the best, but dont pretend you are.

I feel that this always happens. I’ve known a lot of collegiate athletes who end up just hating the sport they shine in because of the constant consumption of their life from that sport. When fun starts to become a chore, or feel like a job, it starts to lose its magic that drives people to play it

Makes a lot of sense. Magnus is in a league of his own. He's waiting for that worthy opponent. Honestly at this point there's no worthy opponent in chess who can challenge Magnus. What a genius and a Legend.
I think the motivation he is looking for is to play the candidates, come out on top and then play against the reigning champion and beat him. He wants to be world champion again but feeling again the thrill of coming from below beating everybody, not just defending his title against one opponent.
Carlsen in the candidates again would be awesome
@@BlindBishop Absolutely. I usually don't follow it, but if Carlsen is in it, I would watch every one of his games

he did what he came to do and now he’s ready to do other things and let other people shine. i think that’s the sign of a good person.
I can somehow relate. It feels different when you become the one being challenged, as compared to when you are challenging someone. You really gain nothing but stress, burden, and excessive expectations from the others.
In analogy, it is like you reach the top of the ladder and are expected to never climb down. There is no way up or down, simply just stuck there.
100% understandable, just hope the winner doesn't feel empty about having the title.
yeah, that kind of puts a slightly diminished feeling on winning, doesnt it? This is a little bit sad, however, this could mean that Magnus is losing the ability to defend the title. Running out of steam to put in the work to stay on top of the game. Basically, he is worn out and smells defeat on the horizon. It is not worth the effort. Payoff is too low. It might not diminish it after all.
This is what happens when you become the best at what you do and no one can overtake you, you lose motivation because you are so good. Hopefully he doesn't go down the same route as Bobby Fisher and still plays the game but not as seriously as few years ago when he became World Champoin for the first time
Bobby Fisher went that path mostly because he put his mind and soul to be the best chess player and saw on horizon than all his skills wont mean much in the wake of the engines and saw how Chess is becoming stale => His love become useless nothing and he went crazy from it

The happiness derived from material things is usually short-lived
Only a player better than Magnus would motivate him to play in the world championship again. That's what competitors do. They want to beat the best. When there's no one to beat, there's no reason to play.

Completely understandable. Just a shame for Ian and Ding, no matter who becomes world champion they will know that they aren't actually the best in the world
You never know, while yes, Magnus in his prime is better than either of them in their prime so far, they may end up better than him if he loses interest I the game
Mental fortitude is part of it too, and if Magnus essentially forfeits then he is not the best.
$10 million prize money in a match between Magnus and Ding would definitely entice him.

True but this feeling might have been there for like only two hours after the game just to feel empty again afterwards, right?
Probably because he had an amazing chess match, which could still happen outside the world chess tour.
I am guessing--like he said in this video--that not losing was more exciting than winning for him. That's a key distinction. He said it all: "I don't have a lot to gain." Implication: he has a lot to lose. But he also doesn't like the format.

He's basically saying that there's not enough competition for him, that's why he's bored at the top.
Bro is Saitama of Chess 😅 🔥💪
In economics, there's a thing called the law of diminishing returns. That is, the benefit or profit gained by an endeavor reduces the more time, energy, or money is spent on that endeavor. This is the reason why people are told to fast, be it on food or in activities they find enjoyable. The time off from these things is what actually allows a person to retain the same satisfaction they get from these things. Magnus has been competing since he was a kid. The time off from competition should recover the excitement he once had competing.

When the goal is to be the best and you achieve it, the drive goes away. Now all Magnus does is “maintain” his position #1 which takes a lot of time out of each day. To step away and use that time to excel in another area with the skill set he possesses is 100% the best decision he could make. He is young and to smart to fall into the trap where it defines him and consumes the rest of his life. Chess is his job, think about yours, do you lack motivation and drive, is there nothing left to work towards? This is the change you need to make!
He’s already realized his potential. It’s time to start exploring the world outside of chess now.
