  • This Élégie in D minor was written by Polish composer Édouard Wolff (1816-1880) in about 1872, and commemorates the death of fellow composer Sigismund Thalberg (1812-1870). Performed by Mordecai Shehori.
Notice: the recording of Shehori is owned exclusively by Cembal a’Amour, was provided to CZcams by The Orchard Enterprises, and is not used for any commercial purposes in this video.

Hello. I love your channel and what you do with the lesser known composers concept. The field of this classical music is so deep and to even be called a composer, one must have a very proficient grasp of the core tenets of music theory. I am a young composer, and I have been working on a set of three piano sonatas. They are written in the classical style. And they are my test pieces for my grasp on form and harmony, before I go into composing more serious and original things. I was wondering if, as your description says, I could share maybe one of these pieces from my set on this channel, so as to get some criticism and feedback from a wider audience than if I were to upload them myself? Please let me know where I can contact you further for this. Thank you!

Very soulfully melodic but structurally not as ingenious.and a little too long. Still certainly it's worth a listen. Thanks.

Edouard Wolff wasn't Polish composer, but German composer of Jewish origin. Yes, he was born in today's Poland, but anyway.

As far as I know when Wolff was born in Warsaw in 1816 it was part of Congress Poland, which was actually part of the Russian Empire, so I suppose if anything he would have been Russian, not German. Every source I have seen, however, considers Wolff and other contemporary composers such as Chopin as being Polish.

It actually feels much more similar to Thalberg in the textures presented.

@@zavilov Chopin, Prelude op. 28 No.2 (1838) immediately came to my mind when I had heard the first 4 measures, joined with Nocturne op. 27 No.1 (1835). There is some serious Chopin influence in there, and it would not be surprising by a Polish composer in 1872.
