The New "Flagship Killer"? - Realme GT First Impressions

  • LG Mobile is no more; the next generation of foldables is taking its time getting here; and the brand that phone freaks used to rely on to spice things up, OnePlus, has gone mainstream - with all the compromise that carries.
So when I saw that a new smartphone from Realme was about to expand beyond its initial China exclusive to a wider release - a phone powered by top-shelf silicon, with a leather backplate, pioneering charging technology and a price impossible to ignore ... I decided it’s time I re-examine my rule about only covering mobiles that come to the United States. Because phones like the Realme GT? I'm tired of missing out on.

I agree. I was a long time OnePLus user (had most of them since the One+1) but last year switched to the iPhone 12 Pro when iOS 14 came out with widgets. Many of my friends have OnePlus phones (7T, 7 Pro, 8 and 8T) but I don't recommend them anymore due to the 9 Pro's price and still weak camera. One of the main reasons OnePlus competes in the US is their inclusion of all of the US 4G & 5G bands. Pixels were always crap (IMO) because of their minium RAM, over priced and they always had issues. Samsung makes great hardware but I don't like their UI and so iPhone it is for now.

That custom cooling can come in handy when I play Genshin, my phone reaches 70°C when so much is going on, like Venti's and Ganyu's burst that shoots the temps up which then starts the lag along with so much enemies on screen, not helping that while all of the fancy effects go on, the overworld on Liyue, the biggest map in the game so far, contributes to the strain on my poor phone's SoC.
I wonder if there are other options besides cooling fans like what Realme provided here.

Michael, is there a chance to do a hands-on video or a review of these two niche products in the future (Leitz Phone 1 and Sharp Aquos R6)?
They seem to be for the Japanese market only, but maybe you could get your hand on one of those two.

I'm rocking a Realme 6 here in Europe, very happy, went from a Oneplus 3 and it is clear that they are very similar in the software department.

I've had realme phones before. I am currently on an Oppo Find X3 Pro - got to say I am loving it! (and it's the jump from the Pixel 3a so all but camera for me is better) BUT the 65W charging is insane and I have a 120W device on the way. I have no idea why people still pay for Samsung phones - that get hot - drain fast and under perform..

My old LG g4 had a leather back and that held up about 4ish years. Actually, I got rid of it before anything went down..sooo it might still be good today. But yeah, leather SOOOO works 👌💪

6:20 that's good - As the reverse is not true! - I have several OP chargers and car chargers in the box and even a SuperVooc car charger that just won't work on the X3 Pro

In Italy they’re going to sell it for €399 on Amazon Prime Day. Moreover the company is closely related to Oppo and this device already supports Android 12 official beta releases. It’s a welcome addition in the smartphone world!

I'm with you Michael. I really want leather finished (synthetic, vegan or any type). The Poco M3 has the "leather" back in their 3 colorways. I have in back in I'm in AWE.
For the charging tech, I really wish for BBK products to give us at least 18W charging if it's not their 1st party solutions. Buying cables to them is quite hard to find. Can't wait for your review and my expectations are set to be in the medium side of things
