The restoration of our historic Nickel Plate Road diesel locomotive has entered a dramatic new phase! No. 358 has been transformed back to its as-built appearance by Progress Rail in Muncie, Indiana. We couldn't be more grateful to our friends at Progress and the hundreds of donors and supporters that have helped us reach this milestone. There's still some work to do to get the 358 ready for the road, but we can't wait to introduce you to this beautiful Electro-Motive time machine very soon.
Donated by Norfolk Southern to the Fort Wayne Railroad in 2010, this SD9-type locomotive has undergone an extensive restoration. It will soon become an operating rail attraction, complementing the nonprofit's preservation efforts and expanding tourism events in the Northeast Indiana region where it will join Nickel Plate Road steam locomotive no. 765. Donations to help complete the restoration can be made at fortwaynerailroad.org/donate. #locomotive #preservation #railroad

Congratulations Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society, for making a 358 Project a tremendous success!!!
Back in black and Venetian yellow, #NKP358 looks sharp! All it needs is some more mechanical and electrical work and she's good to go! Kudos to #ProgressRail for the paintjob, you gave her the look she thoroughly deserves!
PS: when her restoration is all done, will 358 pair up with #NS8100 for a photo op?
@@kristoffermangila indeed
@@sammusillami7995 Nice!
FANTASTIC!! Looking forward to seeing this locomotive run.
Wow! Beautiful workmanship! Outstanding! 👍
Such beautiful work. Hats off to the people at Progress Rail that got her looking factory fresh and the entire Fort Wayne team that got her back on her feet in the first place. Another beautiful piece of EMD Railroading history avoids the torch.
I'm not crying, You're crying!
Looks like it hopped out from the shops right after it was being made. You guys did a very very awesome job on it!
She’s beautiful.
On a more trivial note... I have always thought
the SD9 was the toughest looking locomotives ever build. Love 'em.
OUTSTANDING !!!
I’d be happy to see her fire up, tap her horns and back out on her own power! The paint job is awesome! Kudos!! I’m in Texas and most of our railroads are gone, and forgotten.. Central Texas used to have a few good railroad lines.. Cotton Belt, St Louis Southwestern, Central Texas Railway, Peanut Line, Stephenville Texas North and South.. Massive Respect for your love and passion of keeping Fort Wayne railroads rolling! When it’s gone, it’s gone forever! Treasure and the railroads alive!
I wanted to see USS Texas, fire up her boilers and engage her propellors turn her rudder to cruise around the Gulf of Mexico, but everyone is broke and can’t afford it! 😵😵🫨🫨😭😭🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
She looks gorgeous; 358 can now rock with 765
Awesome 👏
This is such a fitting companion for 514.
First gen running with the latest and greatest. Class.
Well how about that, another NKP restoration! Bring it to Steamtown and put it with the NKP 514 and that would look SICK.
HOLY CRAP! SHE IS GORGEOUS!
In this day and age are we sure it's a she? Locomotives identify under at least 99 genders.
Excellent work!! If only former Western Maryland GP-9 #39 could be restored in similar fashion....
Holy cow, she is quite a beauty indeed!
Its nice to see another nickel plate road locomotive back in the nickel plate paint scheme
Will be a great compliment to 765 👍🏼
She is gorgeous! Thanks to all that contributed!
I feel that one of each locomotive ever produced should be preserved.
Couldn't agree with you more.
My 🎩 off to Everyone a GREAT JOB, Im Looking Forward to seeing Her Live 🚂🚂
Stunning work.....bet you guy's are very proud of how she looks.....
Looks great! Thank you volunteers!
I’m so happy for everyone who worked on this masterpiece of a restoration, and I’m excited for everyone that gets to experience this locomotive from now on! Bravo!!!
Outstanding!
Thank you for "Giving Back"
As a child i saw Steam, then as a young man I saw high nose diesels.
Thank you for the memories.
It takes Real People in Management to take on a project like this for the public.
Thank you
Very nice work. Looks like it just came out of the manufacturer.
That is an AMAZING Job on 358! VERY Well Done!
Beautiful restoration !
Huge congratulations 🎉 she is amazing and beautiful
Congratulations to all on all your time and effort to bring this locomotive back to near new condition. Absolutely breathtaking !!🥃
Amazing!
It's always cool to see a locomotive in a fresh coat of paint
6-axle high nose diesels are just the coolest
Looks great, great job folks!
It's beautiful!
Its amazing to be a 21 year veteran of the CC-IC-CN...i retired at 43 and now run a trucking company that delivers alot to the old EMD facility in Lagrange were my mom worked in bay 6...
That is amazing, it looks like it's brand new from the works.
Beautiful... Again!
Awesome!
Beautiful work by all involved. I saw this engine years ago in Sandusky. The engineers said they preferred it to many modern diesels in yard service.
Well done!
Wow , just a beutiful looking machine ..great job 😊
This locomotive looks amazing. My hats off to the men and women of the FWRR for all of their hard work. Bravo to you!
I have this SD9 from MTH #358. Will be a joy to see it in person!
Work of art coming back to life
That is badass guys. Great job! Love the SD9.
I love SD9s but NKP 358 is such a beauty to look at. I hope to see it in excursion service with NKP 765
She looks wonderful! Great job everyone!
Magnificent! Looks amazing. 👍
SD9 is one of my favorites!
She looks fantastic! The installation of modern amenities such as the ditch lights look like they were put on from the factory, everything looks brand new, and the prime mover idles extremely smooth like it was freshly built or overhauled. Outstanding work to all and congratulations on reaching this big milestone and finishing an extraordinary project!
And the ditch lights are removable 💯
@@fortwaynerailroad you all really did think of everything. How did you engineer that to work? (pun intended)
Looks amazing 👍
She looks beautiful guys! Job well done to you and Progress Rail!
That’s beautiful! He’ll be great at pulling passenger trains with 765! I’m really excited for everything else to be ready!
It is really just warms my heart ❤️ that there are people out there that actually care about locomotives 🚂 and railroad history 😊 👍💯 !! Thank you 🙏 !!
My father, son in law of Raymond S Harms worked for my grandfather for more than 45 yrs. Oh how. Family loved free or 1/2 prices back & forth to Ft Wayne where my Grandma Retta & Ray were from.
Oh How Dad loved the RR & got such a kick over it being named “The NickelPlate which of course referred to what a nickel wld look like after being run over by an Engine. So that’s how it got it’s name, the NickelPlate.
WOW!!!
That is just plain awesome
I'm working at Progress Rail from Brazil and the guys at Muncie did a great job for this locomotive. Congratulations!!
I can't wait to see it in person you guys did an awesome job
Awesome job
NS 8100: “AHEM YOU TRYNA STEAL MY FAME?!?”
Great job you guys.
NKP 358: "I've first worn these colors since I and my siblings left La Grange in '58, little boy!"
Nickel Plate Road SD9 #358 gets it's 1950s looks back. Nickel Plate Road #358 the backup locomotive on NKP #765 excursions.
Even with the ditchlights (which as I saw are removable), the locomotive looks fantastic!
Spectacular 😍😍👏👏👏🖤💛 congrats guys!
Great to see, and hopefully we get lucky to have more news on other stuff, regarding 358 and the other stuff with the FWRHS in the near future
Awesomeness!
She looks amazing!
Wow!!!! Museum quality!!!
Nice a restoration of a 1950 Norfolk Southern (Nickle Plate Raiload) Locomotive.
Absolutely stunning!!!! Amazing job guys, from an american railway fan in australia.
She looks amazing
WOW what a gem
Outstanding work by everyone to get this restoration done. It looks awesome!
Looks fantastic.
Im going to be the first to ask, if ever will you install PTC on 358 so 765 can do mainline runs again someday?
Amazing job on it!! I hope to see her and 765 come together through Pennsylvania someday in the future! Your team of people did an amazing job on it!
Absolutely awesome! Great work!
Interesting headlight configuration.
Having grown up in an area of California, where SD9s were a common sight, I was fooled at the beginning of the video by the light package and high hood. I thought that there was a Southern Pacific unit hidden under that paint.
Wow, she's beautiful!! Pat on the back to everyone involved with bringing this back to better than her former glory!! Great job to all!!
👏👏👏
Oh boy, can’t wait to see what angus Paul thinks of this!
She looks awesome! Great job to all involved!
She is absolutely beautiful!!! Well done and thanks for saving her.
Looks like it's ready to pull hotshot, piggyback trains, at 65 mph!
It looks gorgeous, they did an amazing job!
Great work. Nice!
Beautiful restoration by Progress Rail and the volunteers of FWRHS. Looking forward to seeing it running on the mainline soon!
Nice. Triple-axle SD-9s were known as Cadillacs on the Southern Pacific.
She look good.
Awesome 😊
Wow, shockingly well done
Congratulations, 358 will look great with the 765’s mainline excursion trips in the future!
it would’ve been more crazy if they got NS 8100 the NKP heritage unit
Stunning ! Absolutely beautiful !!
Cool video and channel just subscribed
Everyone seems to overlook these magnificent first gen diesels!
We have an active stretch of ex NKP track here in Central Illinois. Sure would be awesome if she came back home to stretch her legs.
Great stuff. I'm glad you saved her. I would like if you have it to see a video of the body and paint process. I have a few Freinds with Auto body shops that would love to see it . I've seen one in time laps of another unit. It was cool.
So happy it’s back up and running.
A way better reveal than CSX’s trash heritage units.
oh not one of you guys, I had to deal with one you stupid people, I hope you regret saying that because what if they remove all the YN3/YN3B/C units? would you be happy? No. so... make up your mind about the csx heritage units, then you'll see how good they are.
I remember when Norfolk Southern
Was just Southern and ran old engines like that along with the old stream line or round nosed engines as I used to call them when I was a kid.
Even an old steam engine two or three times a year.
I miss the old cabooses too.
We would yell at the guys in the caboose
" THROW OUT SOME FLARES "
And they did most of the time.
Me and my friend Danny jumped on the caboose one day and were riding along on the porch until he messed up and looked through the window.
A guy opened the door and yelled,
" GET OFF HERE YOU DAMN KIDS."
and we bailed.😂
I said Damn Danny we were having a fun ride until you got stupid and looked through the window. 😂🤣😂
An engineer invited me up in the engine and showed me around one day.
The speedometer registered 80 and he told me about the dead man peddle.
Made my year.
My Dad would say ,
" how many dogs you think are on that one "
as a train approached , and we would each guess how many engines were on it.
He could tell by the sound and almost always guessed right.
I sure miss him.😢
Boy was I a happy camper.
They tore out the old side tracks behind my house,
Now the trains go by so fast there's no way you could catch one.
Those ol days are gone now but they make for some good memories.
