There is an office building that when I walk by, the surrounding lawn smells very moldy to me. The grass is on a slight slope, and there are some bare patches that look slimy and mossy. I always wondered if it had anything to do with the chemicals they sprayed on it, or if it was over watered. I’m glad I came across this video
Probably not but if you have a combination of both you will have an almost sweet smell to the soil. And when they are talking an earthy smell I believe that is the smell they are talking about. If you have a healthy amount of fungi in the soil you should also have earthworms. Fungi is one of the main things they feed on in soil.
When I was a kid my Mom was tilling the garden and she stopped and had me smell how good the ground smelled. I’m 68 now but still remember that great smell!

I can tell by the smell if it's more fungal or more bacterial soil.
