The seven-deep rows on the grid, the push start, the crude nature of the knee sliders and the old, mostly rounded style of front fairing. The less corrupted layout of Silverstone. It's all so different from what comes today. I so dearly miss the two-strokes.
thanks for this Theo , i was there all those years ago, flew from Zimbabwe 2 days before and camped the night before the race in the fields outside the circuit. What a nightmare - the poms go nuts till 4 in the morning!!
At 12:30 of the video, the announcer talks about Freddy Spencer not being able to make this Silverstone event because he had broken his collar bone a week earlier, in a practice crash during the AMA National event at Laguna Seca. I watched Freddy get on the breaks too hard while entering the 'Cork Screw' and he lost the front end. I had just received my AMA Pro Card and it was my first Camel Pro Superbike event and also, my first opportunity to be on the track with Americas best Formula 1 GP riders, Kenny Roberts, Randy Mamola and Fast Freddy. I was rider # 54 and finished 18th in our crash shortened Superbike race. czcams.com/video/WLGMrJqgJT0/video.html
Super! Thanks! Tragically without Jack Middelburg, who won this race in 1981! He crashed horribly with Boet van Dulmen in April 1984 at "The C.C.-Races" in Tolbert/The Netherlands, and died soon later in a hospital in Groningen! That footage is also on CZcams! I saw this happen back then! Jack Middelburg, Race In Peace/*\✓
Me too. I've heard the Spanish and Italian national anthems so many times, I can hum them in my sleep. It's time for the Star Spangled Banner to make the podium again. But are there any Americans in World Superbike or Moto 2 or 3?
Jesus! Mamola's riding style was insane. His outside foot was nowhere near the foot peg. Great quality video for such an old race. I would much rather watch gps from the 80s and early 90s than today's.
Sorry to be so offtopic but does someone know of a method to get back into an instagram account..? I was stupid forgot my login password. I would love any tips you can give me.
@Marshall Korbyn thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site through google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff now. Seems to take a while so I will reply here later with my results.
Thank you for uploading this vid! It's amazing to see the legends racing when they were young on vicious bikes. Also, Ron Haslam's riding style looks relatively modern!
Look at all those hay bales on the corner coming into the finishing strait , it must have been like hitting a brick wall if you slid into that lot at a hundred miles an hour , These were great days , but the modern safety today is a great improvement ,
I used to go to the British GP at Silverstone in those days and used to sit in the grandstand on that corner. In 1983 they replaced all the catch fencing with straw bales, and that was the first GP to have nothing but straw bales for protection instead of the catch fencing. I saw a few riders crash there over the years and into the bales, they got up and walked away, even at those speeds. The catch fencing was horrendous for motorcycle racers, several riders were killed hitting the posts over the years, Michele Fruitschi was killed in the 83 French GP after hitting his head at the bottom of the catch fencing post, that was instrumental in riders forcing organisers to get rid of it in favour of straw bales.
Even the difference in helmet from then and today. I did some club racing at Willow in the 80's and anything above 80 MPH your head was bouncing around. Now with my modern Shoei there is no buffeting at even triple digit speeds. Today Bell has a retro helmet that cost more than some of the newer helmets.
The Sheene Suzuki with the Harris frame handled well but was seriously out-paced in engine performance by 1984. Great to see Randy Mamola - a real showman in this sport.
No body has said,, but the at was a very good ride by Barry on that bike ,, tho ONLY Suzuki ,, its not a current works bike 3 years behind be for you start
Randy was a great rider with out a doubt,Ron was robbed with the machines he rode all through his career, but the Norton years served him well, shame about the '92 crash...Barry was robbed too, shit Suzuki's he was given, put him on one of those v4 Hondas ,or3 cylinder jobs,we would have seen Bazza proper
Yeah, Sheene’s career went backworth after 1980. From “crappy” Yamaha’s to breaking his legs and to even more crappy Suzuki’s before retirement. Racing wasn’t easy for him.
This race was Aug. 1984. The last time I saw Kenny on the track was at the AMA National event at Laguna Seca July 1984. Kenny took the F1 class win, Mamola finished 2nd, Mike Baldwin 3rd. Flying Fred Merkel won the SB race..
I went there with my mate, two up on a 250 superdream, 300 mile round trip, it was amazing. Thank you for posting this, awsome times.

I love the old Silverstone layout! And miss the 2 strokes as well - all the bikes I grew up with were 2 strokes so I love the special noise they make!
and the smell!!!
Its really nice to see my hero's racing with a commentary from a guy that loved the sport and always made it special, RIP Murry.
Murry was one of the Greatest commentators of ALL Sports. Period! There will never be another like him
Awesome to see Mamola in his prime! Eddie is so good! Just a great race , so much to see here..
thanks for this Theo , i was there all those years ago, flew from Zimbabwe 2 days before and camped the night before the race in the fields outside the circuit. What a nightmare - the poms go nuts till 4 in the morning!!
Nice to see a pack pf 40 racers, with many privateers having a chance to race against the best of the world...Great racing, thanx for the upload !!
Esa compentencia fue muy buena, todavia la vemos y nos gusta, muchas gracias x mostrarla. José campos, yaracuy- Venezuela.

I remember that crash as my wife was a med worker and helped Freddie cross the track. I ended up with his broken shift pegs as a souvenir!
Awesome cool 😎🇬🇧🤟💯
Wow! I bet you have some interesting stories to tell! Well done.
Fantastic! Thanks for posting.
2 legends Barry and Murray....
Super! Thanks!

Ah if Barry had been on Haslams Honda he would have won a British GP
With a Start like That ..🏁
I was there, awesome proper racing, pure and raw.
Great Race! Thanks for posting. Love the two strokes. I wish some Americans were racing MotoGP today.

@Marshall Korbyn it worked and I now got access to my account again. I'm so happy!
Thanks so much, you really help me out !
@Ignacio Sergio Glad I could help :D
Two strokes are the only real race motors ! I miss the 500s.
great stuff, thanks for posting
Great to see these riders race. Golden
Great Ride from Ron Haslam & Barry Sheene !
Thank you for uploading this vid!

Randy Mamola is a legend. Throughout his racing career, he donated 10% of his earnings to charity.
Shame he never got title...
Mamola was arguably the fastest GP rider to never win a championship, but what a great competitor! Could almost say the same for Rocket Ron Haslam.

Grande eddie!
Buenísimo Randy,
Randy was dandy in the rain
Sharing the track with my heroes they were the days
They need more riders in this race...
Best 2-stroke racing
I was there just past the start line 🇬🇧🇬🇧👍👍
I owned two tow-stokes bikes in my days a 79 Daytona special and an 84 Rz 350.
nice
They used to drag their knees, now they drag their elbows
The Spanish youth are dragging the helmets these days ..🏁
genioooooooooooooooo
My money is still on 4.
🎉
この年マモラは4気筒NSR乗ったんだ? スペンサーはどうした?

'Lawson is riding a very Steady race' ...
🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🥇🥇👏👏👏

Raymond Roche threwing away the Honda wasn’t the brightest idea. 😂 Honda just don’t like seing this.
And i quote "short stocky ginger head Mamola" wow... these really were brave times.
A single front disc on the Elf at 8:00
Good eye!!
Got my first BMX in 84 🤟💯🇬🇧😎
😀I´ve got my first terribly old 250 ccm bike that year 🙂
36:26 "what's up doc"
Awwwwww...the poor bunny rabbit 🐇 got run over at 36:25

Hare today, gone tomorrow.
Paul Lewis sporting some cool shades, huh? It almost looks like his chin strap was just dangling.
Eddie Lawson-Yamaha OW 31 i guess
3 cylinder honda Ron Haslam aka Nsr400 triple

Short stockey very strong Randy freckle faced ginger head Mamola
Surely one of the greatest riders never to have won the championship.
Typical Mamola 🙂
NO Kenny ?
1983Kenny retired
kenny retired end of '83

Ah... 1984....when "sixth" was pronounced correctly, instead of this "sith" bullshit we have now.
What is with that? "Sick-th"....never heard it that way till a couple years ago. Is this something the progressive liberals started? Lol
love these old races great to watch but murray walker really gets on my nerves stick to cars murray your annoying haha 😆😆
Pssst!
Walker died 7 months before your comment ...
