Years ago, a museum in San Jose, California exhibited the entire book’s original art. I had to visit. Amazing experience to walk the floor and take in the original art.

I would really like to see comic artists illustrate the book of Revelation. The visuals would be absolutely sick!!! 😊

I really love the paper used, a bit yellow-ish white really soaks up the full black of the work! Such a masterpiece of art and book design!

Magnificent book I own 2 copies Spanish and English!!!
if i had money i would pay Crumb millions to illustrate
a few chapters of Don Quixote unfortunately i don't have the money
and Crumb wouldn't have enough time left to illustrate all of the chapters

I had the amazing opportunity to see these original pages when they were at the Keller Auditorium here in Portland, OR when the show was touring. I think Shannon Wheeler invited me, if I remember correctly. It was an amazing display. I was floored with how incredible each page was.

For the scholars, believers and the curious, R. Crumb used Robert Alter's translations along with the King James Version of the Bible. Fairly recently a few years back, Robert Alter released The Hebrew Bible fully translated by him which took over 20 years to complete. It comes in a box set with 3 hardcovers and includes some of the most insightful footnotes I've come across. Highly recommended.

The Portland Art Museum in Oregon had all 220 pages of the originals for three weeks. It was interesting how there was a lot more white out on the pages with Eve. Initially was he thinking of making it more lascivious?

I love it when you go over Crumb's work! I grew up in the 60's and 70's. My dad had a lot of the old hot rod and motorcycle magazines, with the cartoon stories in the back. Big Daddy Roth, etc. R. Crumb was ever present in pop culture. I recently stumbled upon a drawing I did back in 87-88. I was blown away by how much of the style of R. Crumb and similar artists had, actually influenced me without, realizing it.

The UCLA Hammer museum also exhibitted the set of original drawings. They did a terrific installation. It is worth looking it up online, they have a page dedicated to it with installation and detail images of select pieces.

Seeing Crumb's rendition, you realise The Bible stories had a lot in common with the adult comic narrative. Both selling vengeance, porn and page turners.

Rick Griffin illustrated the Gospel of John chapter by chapter instead of the verse by verse approach taken by R. Crumb. The book is designed more for easy distribution than highlighting the art which is a bummer but thought I would mention it with the underground connection and John being mentioned in today's episode.
