Finish the Race - Bishop Barron's Sunday Sermon

- Friends, our second reading this week is from Paul’s Second Letter to Timothy-one of the last letters we have from St. Paul. Now toward the end of his life, Paul passes on various pieces of wisdom to his young friend, including this: “I have finished the race.” The spiritual life is like a race; it includes different stages, from the promise, energy, and enthusiasm of the beginning to the experience of hitting the wall, where you can’t go on. St. Paul experienced all of those stages, and his hugely inspiring words are for all of us: no matter where you are in the race, finish it.

Thank Bishop Barron from a lapsed Catholic contemplating and struggling.
Thank you dear Rev.bishop. For more than 10 years, I have listened to your Sunday homily & many other lectures. I am a consecrated religious for more than 75 years. To prepare my own funeral, I have chosen this passage from Paul’s letter to Timothy as the second reading in my funeral Mass. From a Buddhist family converted to Catholicism when I was 8 Yr-old, I do understand the word ‘ pour out as libation’ . Thank you for reminding me again & again the deep & special love the Lord has for me all my life, despite my frequent lapses. Thanks to your constant encouragement as well as keeping me humble. Please pray for me till my last call from God that I may truly say: with His help I have fought a food fight!
Thanks to Bishop Barron l see l must finish the race amen
Oh, thank you, Bishop! At 79yrs in a wheelchair and becoming quite fatigued, I’m grateful for the lovely exposition of this Scripture! I’ve followed HIM for 73yrs by my Evang/Protestant definition! And by HIS grace recently into Communion with the Church (2 yrs)…I sense a need to begin ‘putting the last things in place’ for my ‘release or departure’ into Eternity! My children and friends don’t want me to speak of it, but I’m genuinely looking forward to my ‘new address and assignment’‼️ I have little of the world’s riches, but I’m preparing little gift bags for my loved ones (those for whom I pray, daily) I’m also aware my ‘departure time’ may be on hold for reasons known only to HIM! But either ‘here or There’, I glory in His Cross and my salvation…🤗 Thank you for helping to prepare me more fully for “that day,” Bishop!! Thanks be to GOD!!
O me too. Although I will turn 60 in January. My body is severely broken by many mistakes and ignorant choices made by demand of ignorant doctors. As to the thought of dying, I wrote a prose piece in High School in hopes that He would take me soon. That obviously wasn’t His timing either.
In asking for my patience, Our Loving Lord has opened more and more doors to me about my Catholic Faith, and I’m looking forward to doing a Catechism in a Year in January concurrently with the Bible in a Year study which I started in August.
I’m trying to slow down my ADHD zeal to do things so that my quieted mind can hear the Holy Spirit guide me through my day.
And before my journey began, I was blessed with two episodes of Ecstasy when I reached up to God during depression for Him because with (clinical) depression I cannot hear His voice or feel His presence - it is Pure Hell by the strictest definition of Hell to be without God. Oh boy do I want to be closer to God so much.
I guess my favorite song is by George Harrison “My Sweet Lord” when he’s agonizing about not being with God. Me, too.
But as all the great theologians have said before me, I am being purified through learning, practice and trials. I strive to understand what He wants me to do and do it Right, which as zealous ADHD person I don’t get it completely right most times.
So back to your point, I too want to “pack my bags for anywhere closer to the Lord.” I’m not afraid to die. “Now would be Great Lord,” I am saying; but He’s reply is “Not until you clean up your room.” ;-) {which for this ADHD person is a deep Mess!}
“Ah Lord…”

Oh my goodness. I felt that Bishop was talking directly to me! I am 70 years old, I lost my only baby grandson to trisomy 13, my only child/son to suicide in the military and I KNOW where I am headed and that eternal life begins right now. God bless you, Bishop for this message today…….I’m running that race to the finish line…….
God bless you, Patricia Boynton. Thank you for witnessing to your faith. Your life is a libation for us. Thank you, a million times.

The only thing we go into heaven with is what we gave away while on earth 😮😮wow!!! Lord help us to focus not so much on receiving but more in giving. Amen🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
I read this reading at my Dad’s funeral mass. If there were ever a man who fought the good fight, finished the race and kept the faith…it was my dad and it took every bit of self control not to lose it while reading that it bit of scripture. Love you Dad and hope to see you in heaven someday!
Peace be with you, God bless you 🙏
May we all fight the good fight, finish the race and keep the faith in polarizing times.
Bishop Barron does such a great job of deepening our understanding of Paul’s words! These are the words I chose on my beloved husband’s headstone (who was a great athlete and competitor). He fought the good fight whenever he could defend the rights of unborn children and he kept his Catholic faith which brought me back to the Church. May God bless you all.
The race has only just begun, and hopefully it will take eaons to finish.
One of your best Bishop Barron - if not your best!
God bless you Bishop Barron, for providing the kind of Catholic education we all should have received in Catholic school. Always pure Gold!!

At 78 yo, I am near the finish. Been through it all. The good and bad. I can see God at the finish line. I won't finish first. But I will finish as first as I can.
I will remember your comment. Thank you! God bless you.
God Bless you Bishop Barron. You are a unique and extraordinarily gifted leader. Thank you for your amazing wisdom and guidance.
I love the new closings.
When I was a kid at mass I always thought the letters of Paul were boring compared to the gospels, but now that I've learned more about the scriptures I know I was so incredibly wrong. They're so incredibly fascinating and powerful. Love sermons like these that help me understand them better.
This is so much of my spiritual life. It took me a little while to grasp how profound some things are.
i did, too, thanks for sharing!
@aaa bbb, sir or madam, i m all for understanding all other beliefs on earth, but when can one say that other beliefs are injuring our beliefs? Everyone on earth may believe what they desire, so what gives you the Right to attack my Faith on a website for Faith in God?
@aaa bbb thank you, i will try to see that!
They are complementary to the Gospels and Acts.
Thank you Bishop Barron ❤️🕊
May you live long servant of our Lord. Bishop Baron is indeed a blessing to us🙏🏾 let us all finish the race and keep the faith
God blesss you and protect you Bishop
Thank you, Your Excellency, for this very uplifting homily on perseverance. St. Paul's Epistles are very encouraging and direct, and you have brought the Epistle of 2 Timothy to life! I believe that I speak for many of us watching who gain so much from your work. You are in my prayers. Godspeed!
"Fight the good fight. Finish the race. Keep the faith."
Thank you, Bishop Barron x
Saint Paul a favorite of mine. In his letters his love of Jesus is so evident, and as you speak about his letter to Timothy ; I am reminded of our commitment to God our Father at 83 I pray that I continue the race . Praying I am in His graces, and pleasing Him in every way. God bless you Bishop Barron 🛐☦️🙏
“I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith.” This is my favorite scripture. My goal in life is to say this at the end. Please God may I always keep fighting.

This speaks so strongly to me as I had to stop in the middle of a 24-hour race yesterday 57 miles deep due to a leg injury. It was my first ever event. I had hoped to reach 100. I cannot wait to come back next year and finish that race. I'm a born-again Christian and I carried my cross, both literally and figuratively, with me all day yesterday, and was able to enjoy various moments of both secular and spiritual fellowship with some like-minded masochists. Thank you so much, Bishop Barron. I kept hearing your voice at times - Gloria Dei est vivens homo! 🙏❤🙌
We are but jars of clay, unless we are filled with the Holy Spirit, we are empty.
Thank you, that we may also finish the race
Oh Jesus son of David, let me have my spiritual sight again, and thank you for your servant Bishop Barron, May be be resplendent with heavenly blessings
“By God, he finished the race”. May we all do the same. ✝️📖
Your words always inspire me to keep going...getting confirmed at 59 :) I'm in RCIA..yes I will finish my race. God Bless your words of wisdom and fire
Congratulations!
Thank you. Bishop Baron.✝️🕊️🙏
"Finish the race." This is oddly inspiring. Being in the middle of the race, raising children, providing a safe home for my daughters and husband, "hitting the wall," resonates with me. It can be tedious. It can be monotonous. It can feel defeating, at times. Finishing the race, pouring out all I have to give my daughters the best start in the beginning of their race, is worth every ounce of my being.
Thank you Bishop for another inspiring homoly. 🙏
Beautiful! Your daughters are blessed!! Blessed be God!
@@VeronicasVeil333 Thank you. 😊
So true! I can relate as well at age 63. Thank you good Bishop for such a profound message.
Listening to our Bishop during these homilies, I am challenged in so many ways, to look beyond...to stretch more...to surrender more..
Lord help me.
Needed this one B-B!
God bless all ❤️❤️❤️we are racing the race Jesus l trust in you 💝💝💝💝💝💝🙏
The first race was in our mother's womb, where out of hundreds and thousands only one came to the end to receive life and a body. Let no one say they didn't choose to live, that life was forced upon them. We all choose to live and must make that choice anew daily, to serve and strive after qualifying, to win a crown that will not fade away.
Fight the good fight,
Keep the faith amidst the trials and tribulations of life, and finally Finish the Race,
As we await the reward for which no eye has seen, nor has any ear heard nor has it been perceived by any mind, what our Lord has for us!
This sermon has blessed me immensely. I have spent the past 22 years building up a business, never calling in sick even when I was. Now at the end of it I find myself possibly nearing financial ruin. I need to finish the race with God's help. I find myself praying the Rosary on the way to work and on the way home from work which has brought me immense peace. I find myself being more compassionate with people. This crisis has brought me closer to God and to people. I now understand the words "The only thing you take with you into the life to come, is what you have given away on earth." Cardinal George of Chicago. What a gift God has given us in Bishop Barron, may God bless him and keep him always, Amen. God Bless you all.
Bishop, you are so correct when you say that your life will change when the concept of emptying out sticks. It did for me. I tried to fill up with so many things over the years. Even when I got them it didn't make me happy. Sometimes that made it worse.
When I grapsed this concept and started reading the gospel I realize how so many things I thought were so important were indeed "rubbish." I vowed to God to give myself to him and to remain with Him no matter where He has me or what season I'm going through.
We have starting power. We need staying power!
Thank you Bishop ! Blessings! 🥰
Thank you Bishop. This was one of the readings from my mother’s funeral a year and a half ago. It spoke to me then for her life. And it spoke to me today for my life. God bless you.
God bless you Bishop Barron!
By God he kept the faith 😀

I love you Bishop Barren; you have changed the whole course of my life!❣️
Thanks Bishop Barron,. Very inspiring sermon. 😀
Another great sermon from from a wonderful bishop who is running the race well. May we all do the same.
Thank you, Bishop Barron. Good counsel for the journey. "Finish the race" says it all. God bless.
“Oh, Lord, rescue me from foolish pride and help me learn from Your gentle and humble heart! Gracious Father, reprogram my soul with your Word to remember the world is all about Jesus and not myself. Help me not think more highly of myself than I ought, but to delight in regarding others as more important.”
I love this🌹
'I love it too!
Thank you, Bishop Barron. Your Sunday Sermons always fire me up to keep the faith and spread The Word in my own little way.
My wife and I go to mass on Sunday but Wednesday evenings are a Bishop Barron video night! Best wishes to you, Laureen...from Tom and Eileen in Texas.
I enjoyed listening as i complete my formation
@@DAndrewilliams527sonicfan God bless you. My husband is a recent convert too.
I’m a semi raised Catholic. I didn’t get my middle school faith formation. It’s a gapping hole that’s very hard to fill. My parish confirmed me on Social Justice instead of teaching me the basics.
I’m limping along trying to learn it here and there. Even buying middle school faith formation classes makes me look like a sexual predator. What a mess I am. I’m running the race with a two wheeled tricycle and no training wheels. Not very athletic but always challenging. ~anne
Prayers for us all
Wow what a beautiful sermon. As I read through the comments everyone can so relate to every word you spoke. We have all struggled with something in our lives… some more than others but there is a sequence of events that take place in this struggle to reach the end and we all want to get to the end of the race. There is something so powerful in “fighting the good fight”.
Thank you for your energy Bishop Barron for you Sunday Fire Seremon😍🌺🌺🌼
I love your beautiful, intelligent and always inspiring Sunday Sermons. Thank you so much Bishop Barron!!
For years now I've admired St Paul as a hero and the reading today has been my favorite passage, but I didn't know why until this video. Thank you Bishop Barron.

Life experience from Bishop Barron is so valuable. Thank you.

Bishop Barron speaks with the power of the holy Spirit. I told the Lord yesterday I would be happy if I was rich then Bishop Barron drops this.
I'm not Catholic but your message was just what I needed... God bless you...
Thank you Bishop Barron 🙏
I pray that at the end of my earthly journey I will share Paul’s thoughts in this scripture passage. I pray that I will have poured my life out in love to others. To have been a conduit of the graces that I’ve received and freely given away. To feel as though I’ve done it all for God’s glory. That for me would be a life well lived. I’m ready to enjoy the heavenly banquet with my beloved Jesus.
Thank you father for reminding us that it's not just about 'me and Jesus.' But about me and Jesus and everyone the Lord brings into my life. 💗🙏💗
Your Eminence, Thank you for your encouraging sermon. God Bless.
Thank you Bishop Barron for encouraging us to defend the Truth of the Gospel and resist the false teachings of false Shepherds like the majority of the Bishops of the German Synodal Wrong Way.
Thank you Bishop. God bless you too.
Without God's grace there's not even a beginning to a race. Call around 1st and knock at God's door and ask His advice about your plans. Then with divine approval on board, only then respond to the starting pistol.
Love Bishop Barron!
Bless u Bishop. And this from a non Catholic
Bishop Barron is such a good speaker with wonderful sermons that are inspirational and heartwarming. Thank you Bishop for your dedication and love for doing the Lord.’s work and spreading his Truth.
I need to hear this. Caring for a husband who has AD is a tough journey and often I wondered if I could go on when I was “hitting the wall”. Bishop Barron, you had said that suffering can be a gift from God and although I can’t see it as such right now, I believe it because of the lives of the saints who suffered so much more than what we’re going through now. Thank you for this uplifting homily and please pray for us.!
You WILL see one day what your freely offered suffering has brought in blessings to other souls and your own. Praying you receive God's consolation and endurance. Much love to you!
This is the test I went straight to when my sister passed an excruciating death in UCLA
Glory and praise to our God! Thank you, Bp. Barron.
Thanks Bishop for spreading the word of God. ❤❤
Thank you Bishop Barron. Your homily gives me much to think and pray about as well as being encouraging.
I long to keep the Faith; Trusting; Finishing the Race!
Wonderful!! Brings hope in place of fear into the moment of death... Through faith in Jesus.
Every Sunday I receive nourishment from your sermons, Bishop Barron. We all have different tribulations in, as Bishop Barron says, "the race." Some more. Some less. A good reminder -- especially in today's American society of the "ME." -- "it" is not about receiving. But a pourig out. Of course to pour out, we need beyond an empty vessel. These sermons fill my vessel that I may have nourishment to pour out to others. Regardless of how imperfect and staggered it may be. Thank you again, Bishop Barron.
Amazing stuff! BB is so inspiring not only to me personally but surely to all who are willing to pay attention to this brilliant interpreter of the Christian message! Let us pray that they make him its next Holy Father!
Thank you Bishop. Being in norway we are starving for God's word for our soul.
God's blessings be with you!
Another excellent sermon. In the very last chapter, the one that talks describing himself as being 'poured out' and 'finishing the race.' What I always thought touching to the point of putting tears in my eyes was in that last chapter verse 13, Paul asks Timothy 'Bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas when you come-and the books, especially the parchments.' Paul was in prison-a dungeon? and he was cold-'bring my cloak.' And asking to bring 'the books, especially the parchments.' Being very bored and locked up should not be underestimated-it almost brought Marie Antionette to insanity before her beheading.
Excellent sermon! Thank you for sharing, Bishop Barron. Love & Shalom!
Thanks Bishop very much for this brilliant sermon🙂
Thank you Bishop Barron 👏 God Blessi you always 🕊️✝️❤️
Bishop / How encouraging was this message! with tears I received it / The wisdom embedded in it / May we, as Saint Paul did, keep the faith and finish the race! 🙏
A beautiful sermon. The saints have always inspired me for that exact reason… they kept the faith(in service to others) and finished the race.
And even more inspiring the saints that fought illnesses… ministering in illness….a powerful testimony to faith and finishing the race. ♥️✝️
Isn’t that the real reason they were saints…they made it to the finishing line…(in faith and service)
