  • Some days back, a video went viral about Koreans BANNING Indians by @nikitaksthakur where she exposed a very important point about microaggression against Indians & Pakistanis in Korea. We reached out to @SubtleCrazykorea and asked him about the whole story. About situation of Indians in Korea and how we are treated.

This video is not to incite you against Koreans or to portray Koreans in a bad light. In every society there are good apples and bad ones too. We must strive to improve the society we live in. And take corrective measures accordingly. That's why we have given the example of Dr Ambedkar who inspired us to use education, knowledge, and power to change the world.

Why don't you do it ?

As an Indian student in South Korea I totally agree with the everything said in this video. Thank you so much for making people aware about the situation. I really like the way you represent the content and talk about the solutions when others are just exaggerating the problems.
Just because of some people whole country can't be blamed. It's been 4 months since I have come to the korea and what I have noticed here is even our Indian people are discriminating each other on the basis of the place they have come from. They don't call themselves Indian instead they divide india on the basis of North India and South India. Telling about your state is not wrong but be proud of just your state and looking low at your own Indian people is morally wrong. Being a student in a different country I believe that it's our responsibility to take care of our behaviour because whatever we do is directly linked to our own country's image.
And I agree discrimination exists in korea. But they are also trying best from their side to welcome foreigners in their country and their hearts. So before blaming others we should first improve ourselves.

Personally I don't think it's wrong to say ur from South/North/East/West India, because it's just a way of sharing identity like how we say we're from this state or that. India is diverse and different. We have arguments and fights but don't split up, which is the beauty of it.

You forgot most important point here. We as indian follow the law of land where we go but i see many indians don't follow basic manners. I blame indian movies be it south north or Bollywood for such typical behaviour. We don't follow lines we try to break out and get ahead, we dont follow basic hygiene rules, we don't dress appropriately i have seen guys wearing sandals open shirt messy hair in gulf like they are coming out of pushpa gang. We talk loud, we try to cut the lane, we don't greet people with manner we are wo direct in our conversation, we don't know how to receive call on phone n cut the phone without even ending the convo. Eveyone is runnin pusphpa bahubali kgf image of themselves in their own mind. We need to change and we will change. We used to be taunt by Pakistanis for lack of toilet n we won that battle. I m happy this issue are coming out we will win this battle as well.

Thank you bhai for making a video on this topic with valid solutions too
I'm one of the people who has lived in S.Korea for the last 6+ years
and created a video sharing my experience of racism/discrimination/pretty privilege in Korea
    sharing my experiences honestly
(as real as I could be while still trying to keep it light despite it being a heavy topic)
Took some notes on the solutions you offered:
    1. on a governmental level:
creating international pressure (example of apartheid in S.Africa)
    - involving government officials
    - raising awareness through social media
    - non-violent approach, no hate, facts + implementation of vision of an ideal future
    2. for indian businesses
take inspiration from the situation (example of Jamsethji Tata)
    - create indian international companies or brands providing value to millions globally
    3. for individuals
    - spreading awareness in Korea about India
(for this purpose, I'm a part of the unesco cross cultural awareness program (CCAP) in Korea)
    - show the great parts of India to other countries, amazing parts of india: festivals, music, dance, diversity
    - as an indian, don't be prejudiced against other indians who are probably less educated, from different villages, different religions, etc
    (on a spiritual level)
    - find the part of you that discriminates against others and integrate it
Take inspiration from the greats in India: Babasaheb Ambedkar, Gandhi
(and omg thank you for saying my favorite quote ever)
BE THE CHANGE YOU WANNA SEE IN THE WORLD

I lived in South Korea from 2002 to 2007, my husband worked in Samsung and I lived in 3 cities of Korea, Daejeon, Busan and Seoul.....And at that time very few Indians lived there but in those years I never faced racism, in fact when I would go to buy groceries, the ajuma who worked there would start giving me extra fruits and vegetables And when I said no, she said, "I'm giving it to you because you come from the country where Buddha was born."

Hi Abhi&Niyu as an Indian living in korea, I really appreciate the efforts you put into making this video. I faced the discrimination myself and it's a common practice even in famous neighborhoods of seoul. When I was denied entry in places citing my nationality as reason, I felt so helpless. I reached out to the korean police and explained the situation to them ("in korean") and asked them that I pay for their taxes too so why they're not fighting for me. Their response was just to just go and talk to the club manager. I felt so helpless, and furious especially when everyone credits (on internet) korea as a heaven to settle in. So I'm more than happy that you helped people to get a better idea of the situation.

Thank you for bringing this into light.
My roots are from Penukonda where Kia motors manufactures and assembles it's cars. The locals are treated like unnecessary filth.
My aunt who still lives there, struggles with water issues as the factory gulps gallons of it to make their cars. The least Koreans can do is be grateful for the resources.
The Andhra government is blind to this issue until they get their cut.
The town is impoverished and the locals bear this untouchability attitude for the sake of employment. It hurts to see my people being discriminated against in their own land. If you didn't know what it felt like to be Indian when Britishers were around, just visit Kia factories in Penukonda!

I really felt bad for this, just becz government getting revenue from such foreign companies they should not ignore such matters.
As we already know the history the Britishers came to india for business and later ruled for 89years,it took sacrifice of many lives to get freedom.

I have worked as a software engineer at Samsung Noida for nearly 2 years (2019-21). What I have experienced is that Korean employees are treated as masters and we as slaves. Indians have to go through scans, even their bags, while there is a different passage for Koreans with zero checking. Felt like a pain when I used to see this. There is a different food court set up, okay with this, but seats are arranged separately from where we Indians sit. They see us as if we are minors. Even their car doors are opened by drivers.
All the key positions are held by Koreans. Even the Department head has no decision-making authorities
I am well aware of how Indians are treated in South Korea. But in India, how can they treat us like this
Also, I forgot to mention the sir-madam culture there. I'm not sure who introduced this, but we used to call seniors as sir and madam
Also, I was not aware of this, but someone said VIP toilets for Koreans. It was highly likely to be true as I never saw any Korean in the washroom.
There are several Samsung India stories over the years about this. Just Google once. Koreans at Kia in Andhra had separate eateries where Indians were not allowed. I wonder how shit like this gets allowed. That sounds super racist.
I remember reading about some hotel near KIA factory in Andhra specifically built for Koreans/Foreigners and Indians not allowed there. Later, they said its because they serve beef/pork, etc, and don’t want Indians to feel offended. 🙄
kia's big car manufacturing plant in Andhra Pradesh has sort of mini Korea shops and restaurants opened up nearby , run by koreans, which openly say Indians are not invited inside those restaurants. imagine , Indians in india, being denied service in restaurants in India. I'm glad we are finally getting awareness of racism against Indians ,which is usually brushed off as shitty jokes
Conclusion: Will never in rest of my remaining life will I ever buy a Korean Product.

My parents are government teacher themselves and i went to their school and i can clearly see the issues which needs to be tackled..i am a student currently preparing for my university entrance exam but as the youth of this country its my responsibility too to make sure that India is recognized respectfully in the global world. I don't really understand how can people think of a simple human like God. Why can't just enjoy the music? These idol are trained. Yep they are trained for everything from how to pose to how they should smile. They are assigned roles in their group. That's just how their industry works. I'm a K-pop fan too but only for music. And I think these idols should never be given a high status. I personally only like bts out of whole K-pop industry because of their message and music. But I don't think or will ever think of them as God.

Let me share you my experience with Indians. I'm from Nepal and many Indian pilgrims visit Pashupatinath and Budanilkantha Temple. The major instruction in both temples are not to click the photograph of certain statues. The instructions are mentioned in big banner with symbol, and English language but many times it happens that they don't follow rules. Once, Indian pilgrims kept clicking the photos. The local person thought maybe they didn't see the banner or maybe couldn't understand the instruction so he politely asked not to take photos in Hindi language but they replied,"Humko dikhai diya hum andhe nahi hai." Even police got involved and they had to delete all the photos and were escorted outside the temple safely. It has happened many times. Not all, but most of them push other people purposely, avoid instructions and act aggressive. 😞

In 2019, I had the opportunity to participate in a Robotics Competition representing IIT Kanpur in Korea. It was an interesting experience, but I couldn't help but notice that the people there seemed somewhat reserved, with minimal interaction among themselves. As we were checking out of our hotel on the last day, the janitor, a lady, pointed at me and my team while loudly speaking in Korean. Unfortunately, we couldn't understand her message, and despite sensing her frustration, we had to hurry to catch our flight. To this day, I remain curious about what she was trying to convey but sure she was very angry.

I get treated positively because of that even in India or in America because that's how it works because it brings familiarity. Oh you are from Bihar, oh I am also from Bihar and suddenly there's a biases a kind of positive reinforcement because of existence of a familiar term irrespective of other factors and nuances. The point was everyone is more or less same everywhere in the world in the era of globalisation. However due to lack of interactions, on a global level we all live in our respective eco chambers (countries) and hence have a very binary understanding of each other whic exists even inside the country (for example north and south, mainland and northeast and what not) but on a bigger picture what's the way forward is dialogues. The more you interact the more nuanced understanding you will have of each other and this continues for life. However, I will still support this video because I know just like everywhere else, it's not a perfect society and korea also have a long way to go to be a heterogeneous society from a homogeneous society but there's nothing for us to worry as this is India's century and we are freaking unstoppable.

His wife is Korean and she helped them with the fight!
This line gave me more strong point to keep in mind that if i ever get to married to a foreigner or have a friend from another country I should know that particular person's views on my country " if he respects my country ,i respect his country than no problem in marrying him !
But if he doesn't respect i am not going to marry him!
There are people in Korea who are racist but even in India racism is not over !
If we love something we should also be ready to accept the negatives about it!

Last year i visited Seoul due to my work ( im a fashion designer) and the way people treated me was kinda rough maybe its because of my skin colour ( dark brown) , they kept taunting me about how indians speak in a different accent this that crap well I didn't pay to much attention to those taunts . Idk why people in our country are getting influenced in korean culture meanwhile indians are forgetting about their own culture shouldn't we promote and conserve our culture ( ik some kpop obsessed fans will start barking at me if i tell more about my experience over there in south korea )
