- A shooting star crashes onto Earth and unleashes a hideous, rampaging blob. Can you stop it from destroying the planet?
--
A shooting star crashes onto Earth and a hideous blob emerges. It creeps and leaps, it glides and slides. It’s also unstoppable: no matter what you throw at it, it just re-grows and continues its rampage. The only way to save the planet is to cut the entire blob into precise acute triangles while it sleeps, rendering it inert. Can you stop the blob from destroying the planet? Dan Finkel shows how.

I thought they were 7 cuts no matter what
But it looks like they were 7 only because he grows up
Tmjon they said you can only have 7 cuts while the satellite is right above you, before it moves away. If the monster never grew, then you could just wait for the satellite to complete an orbit around earth so you can get another chance. But since it doubles in size ever hour, by the time the satellite completes orbit the monster will be larger than the earth.

Yeah, sadly...a lot of these "riddles" are just bad math problems. I think I've only seen three that I'd actually consider riddles.
You can actually solve the riddle with only 3 cuts. I wish I could explain, but it's sorta hard to do in words, so try to figure it out yourself.
Edit: Okay, I figured out how to explain it. On each of the 3 sides, go to the middle of the side. Then, make a cut to each of the other middles of the other sides. Boom. 4 triangles, all with acute angles.
This would either result in four equilateral triangles or at least one obtuse triangle. Therefore, this strategy doesn't work.
@@yellowmarkers um, equilateral triangles are acute
@@poisonedmaple6874 yeah i realized that now but if you had that situation the entire triangle would also be equilateral and therefore acute, and i dont think the blob would just intentionally commit suicide like that
@@yellowmarkers :/
makes our job easier XD
That wouldn't work in case the triangle was extremely obtuse itself, it would result in 2 acute and 2 obtuse triangles, you need a solution the works for every possible triangle so if a triangle has three sides as 100, 99 and 2, the 2 length side being base 99 being back and 100 being the hypotenuse then if you match all middle points you get 2 acute and 2 obtuse traingles, but if you cut it into a Pentagon it works universally

What about making three cuts, making it look like the triforce?
It depends on the angles of the blob's triangle, which I wish they'd specified. If the blob's triangle is really short and long, then one of the angles of each of the two bottom corner triangles will be right or obtuse. I think even the solution they gave would fail if the blob's triangle is scalene and is really short and long though. Them not giving more info about the blob's triangle makes it impossible to give a perfect answer (unless I'm mistaken).

My friend, squares and triangles can live in harmony. Two right triangles when put together along the hypotenuse form a square.
@@EnderIzzy124 that is the reason triangles are the best shape. You can put together different amounts of traingles to get different shapes. The shape you get is determined by the amount of traingles used +2 as this formula determines the amount of sides a shape has

@X Baron
Which one?
@Massimo O’Kissed
You’re right! I never noticed!
@@CorollaryOfDawn
The one in the bottom middle. An explanation is that said triangles are roughly drawn and the biggest angle of said triangles would be 72 degrees on average, which is way below 90.
@@X_Baron Isn't it a perspective thing though? The triangle is supposed to be flat on the ground (according to the story), and so, from the perspective that the graphics person has put us at, it appears elongated at the edge nearest us, and compressed at the point furtherst away from us. Admittedly it might have been better to create the effect of the camera moving up and overhead (relative to the triangle) prior to the cutting, so the diagram could be viewed in less misleading way.
I agree with @MrDannydoodah, it's a perspective thing. We can't be 100% sure if all the angles are acute or not from this point of view, they should've made a top down view for those parts.

Now that I think of it..
Imagine notorious big being in superhot as a final boss
Couldn't you just cut it into a triforce shape?
thats what i thought
This would depend on the starting triangle, if the biggest angle is 90 degrees or bigger (like the triangle that is shown for instance) then it wouldn't work because that angle would stay the same size.
The hexagon solution on the other hand works no matter what kind of triangle it initially is.
That would only work if all the original angles were already acute, meaning you wouldn’t have to do anything to begin with.
If you could cut it into a triforce then all the angles would need to be less than 90 degrees from the start so the blob wouldn't live anyway.
haha same thinking here dude, thanks for your comment (and the answers on your comment) otherwise I would have had the question of why my answer wasn't correct forever lol
Bisect (but do not cut, just find the line) all 3 vertices, the center-point of the pentagon you will create is at the intersection of these lines.
CUT a line from the obtuse vertex along its bisector to the center-point (but not beyond).
From the center-point to longest leg of the triangle, cut a line on each side of the bisector of the obtuse angle SUCH THAT the angle between the bisector and each cut is equal and the sum is 90' from the base of the acute triangle you created (just barely

Of course triangles are the best shape, you gave the only reason that matters in the video: They make Pizza!
I was expecting a 'they kill monsters!' But your reason is fine.
Pizzas are circular shape though so circles are the best shape
no, pizza slices are round on one side
The pizza box is square, the pizza itself is round, and the slices are triangular.
My first thought was "this is like asking me if I can kill an immortal person"
This is asking us to become Kratos and other God killers at this point
Theoretically you could do this in only 3 moves, using 2 to make a rhombus, and chopping the rhombus in half horizontally, so there's only 4 triangles
It used to call itself the Blob Riddle, but nowadays it’s know as Lord Bloblemort.
This was easy because I love the Legend Of Zelda. If you cut it into 4 triangles using the Tri-Force as your pattern, you only use 3 cuts
an obtuse triangle cut into a triforce would result in the triangle that contains the obtuse angle being obtuse itself.
Wouldn't work

I don’t even try to solve these riddles, I just watch them.
Same
My solution was to cut a triangle inside the triangle, with the points of the inner triangle touching the edges. Since there are two cuts touching at each edge instead of just one, you don't have to worry about the issue with creating obtuse angles.
This was also my idea originally, but it doesn't work if the blob was initially an obtuse triangle.
1:26 "For the next few minutes, the blob is sleeping in its OBTUSE triangle form..." With 3 cuts, you can cut a triangle out of the center and get 3 acute triangles and one obtuse triangle and you are worse off than you started since you still have an obtuse triangle to deal with and only 4 cuts left.
Cut the triangle in such a way that it get divided into 4 equilateral triangle and it can be formed in only three cuts.
I was wondering the same thing, why ist this not considered?
Because the monster sleeps in an _obtuse_ triangle. It says so in 1:31. The Triforce only works in an equilateral triangle.
@@lguffee4930 Right, thanks!

so do equilateral triangles work? because if so if you cut a perfect triangle in the middle so that it makes 4 equilateral triangles that should work right?
all equilateral triangles are acute. and your method would almost work, however the top point of the triangle is obtuse
Reasons I think triangles are the best:
1) A triangle is the shape with the maximum amount of vertices that are non-collinear that can exist in only one plane. In other words, the maximum amount of points that can form only a 2-D shape is 3
2) A triangle does not have one centre. There are the points of intersection of medians, altitudes, angle bisectors and right bisectors. So every triangle has four centres. Except equilateral, it has just one.
3) They are simple to work on but also at the same time incredibly hard to work on.
4) They are EVERYWHERE. From videogame designing to your pizza, from graphic designing to logos. Even CZcams's logo has a triangle.
Last point is kind of bs, as most shapes such as squares and circles are also everywhere.
@@ttvm4096 Apparently, to most normies, squares and circles are everywhere. Look closely, a square is actually two triangles.
Mujahid Syed equilateral triangles also have four centers, theyre just all in the same place
