Gut issues are a major driver of low homocysteine and high histamine in many of our clients. But what other conditions might result in this scenario, and how does it affect our health in other ways?
In this new episode, Naturopath Joanne Kennedy takes us through the ins and outs of the biochemistry of histamine and homocysteine in the body, including how too much or too little of either of these can present in patients, what blood tests she recommends and why it is so important to test homocysteine in anyone who comes into our clinics with an inflammatory condition, and why we need to be cautious in prescribing methylated B vitamins to clients in these cases.

Thank you for talking about low homocysteine! I agree that everything is so focused on high!

I appreciated this interview so much, however, just because there is a focus on high most of the time it doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be addressed. I felt like we only focused on low but Im HIGH. I did enjoy the education though. Thanks a ton

Heavy metals can block mtr and mtrr enzymes ( thats the converting enzymes moving homocysteine to methionine) .
Homocysteine can be blocked from its conversion to Glutathione ( the gsh enzyme because of mold exposure)
According to the EPA 70% of buildings have had water damage. The pathways chart Joanne Kennedy uses on her videos were created by Dr Ben Lynch. Its fascinating (and helpful) to better understand these pathways). I hope this helps.

Very disappointed why you addressed only low homocysteine and not HIGH homocysteine like I have. I guess the interviewer must have low:(

So with terrible histamine after Sibo treated with Xyfaxin last year., insomnia, rapid heart rate, rashes, bladder discomfort the list is long, I have a question!
Is it a bad idea to take a multivitamin? I find even my multi vitamin with B vitamins in it, as they all do, make my histamine symptoms even worse. I have been on a low histamine diet for the past year. Debating another round of Xyfaxin thinking I still have too much bad bacteria.

I have low homocysteine, used to be high before taking methylated vitamins. I take 3 capsules per day per directions, will drop back to 1.

My homocysteine went low because I took methylcabalamin 1000 mcg twice a day. I felt terrible, almost bedridden with severe POTS and histamines intolerance symptoms. My B1, B2 and B3 went down to a deficiency state but my ferritin finally went up. My Taurine and Cysteine are low. I am not sure what to do now. I am taking thiamine which helped with POTS and ataxia a lot, but I still feel horrible and got miomas growing like crazy. Please help. Should I take MSM to support sulfatation? Should I take B2, B3, NAC, Taurine? I don’t know what to start with? Which order?

What to do if you have both histamine and homocysteine levels above normal values? Besides the histamine diet, what additional thing to normalize the levels of both?
Does anyone find themselves in this situation?

Me and yes i have the mhtfr genetic issue and currently with calcification in arteries but normal cholesterol. I'm thinking people like us need to avoid enriched foods (anything white in America) and take methylfolate but not an expert and still trying to get clarity

Still listening but what about those with mthfr genetic differences that don't metabolize folic acid well. I understand to take methylfolate instead but do we need to avoid folic acid enriched foods? I hace high homocysteine and normal cholesterol but all my doc can do is offer statins for the calcified arteries. I'm not satisfied with this.

Riboflavin helps convert folic to active forms.

Dr Ben Lynch appears to be the authority on mthfr. He recommends against Folic acid containing foods because 45% of the general population can't convert it well. Supposedly there are 5 enzymes that have to function well to make Folic acid conversion to 5-methyltetrahydrofolate the active form for good methylation of which so many enzymatic systems rely on.

I need to take vitamin B12 but I wonder if it’s a good idea because I have histamine intolerance. Do you know if its ok to take? I also have low homocysteine and high lipoprotein (a).

If you do decide to take it, find out what form is best for you. (Hydroxo, methyl, adenosyl, or cyano ) Genetic testing for SNPs may help you find out if you need a specific form.

I have yet to hear of any Functional or Holistic Drs worth their salt ever recommend cyanocobalamin as a good source of b12.
