    So nice to see a pro doing his magic. When I was a kid, I was fascinated by stories from my great uncle on his Montana farm (circa 1920’s/30’s) and he said he’d make a corncob pipe and put in a little Indian weed, coffee, a little horsepucky, and “even some tobacco” and smoke it as a kid. I took to trying out my own pipe-making (yes, read the Hobbit somewhere around this time, too) and made my first corncob pipe with a maple sapling stem (maybe 10 years old). Hooked on the idea, I craftily broke into my dad’s forbidden-to-me woodworking shop and started making oak pipes and then fell in love with Cherry. Lots of time sanding, dremelling, and “perfecting my craft” (at a 11-12 year old level). Had all my little hand tools in a wooden box I made with a lock on it. I got some of my Dad’s Captain Black tobacco-still the most pleasant smell there ever was-and took each pipe for a test drive (my folks seemed to allow this). My greatest pride was in making a pipe for my uncle, the last remaining pipe smoker in the family. I loved the craft very much. From there, I got interested in early American woodcraft through Roy Underhill’s show and books. I connected with a local who actually came from one of those eastern historical towns and she did this woodcraft. I learned a good bit from her. In the course of a year or two, I collected antique tools and even made some of my own. My last project was ambitious and over my head: a treadle lathe. I wasn’t able to complete it, and didn’t do much woodworking from then on, but my hope is in my later years and retirement I’ll get right back into these splendid crafts! Thanks for your inspiring videos!

    Fantastic results my friend! Im curious as to what grit sandpaper you use after your leather dye coats? And how do you get that nice glossy buffed finish for your end result? I have used 100% carnauba wax before and still cant really achieve a high gloss shine. Keep up the good work!

      I sand up to 1500 grit, then buff with red and white compounds, and finally c-wax

    Another beautiful work of art brother thanks again! How did the small hole occur at bottom of bowl? Nice recovery with the stippling!🙏🙏🙏

      The hole was a natural inclusion in the wood. Usually cause by the briar growing around a clump of sand in the ground. Luckily it didn't go all the way through into the chamber.

    What type of dremel bit are you using the first time you put the dremel to it? Is it some sort of bur?

    • @joeleagles5491
      @joeleagles5491  Před 7 měsíci

      Yes, they are rather fine, so I don't accidentally gouge the briar: www.amazon.com/Carbide-Tungsten-Compatible-Engraving-Polishing/dp/B0B3MP12PT/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?crid=32E74EPMNWTT4&keywords=Dremel+rotary+burs&qid=1700100248&sprefix=dremel+rotary+brus%2Caps%2C131&sr=8-4

    Smoking a pipe and shooting pool seems like quite a classy evening. Not going to happen at a bar or pool hall, though.

    Glue in a pipe????

    • @joeleagles5491
      @joeleagles5491  Před 7 měsíci

      Almost all pipes nowadays use CA glue for filling holes and attaching accessories. 2 part epoxy is also used.
      As long as the CA glue isn't used inside the bowl then it is safe
