  • Burna Boy - “Collateral Damage” (Vevo Ctrl)
Lagos native Damini Ogulu was only in grammar school when he came across the FruityLoops software that was popular for tracking beats on home computers. He's been creating music ever since, absorbing the diaspora from dancehall to DMX, and using the name Burna Boy, has really lit a flame on the global dance scene. The music biz was in his blood; his grandfather was Fela Kuti's first manager. But he did the hard work it takes to make a true dent. From 2012's "Like To Party" grooves to the kinetics of this year's "On The Low," he's crafted some of the strongest beats around. To celebrate the arrival of his 'African Giant' album, he came to deliver performances of "Collatoral Damage" and "Anybody."

This song is deep. Reflects the common problem on the African continent. Its difficult but I pray one day we will find a way to speak with one voice and realize that all people of African descent are one people and learn to use our resources to raise up a community of people rather than to just show individual success.

    Translation:
    Lyrics by h-world
    Hook:
    Ambassador go dey chop
: Ambassadors of Nigeria are eating (stealing money).
    And Governor go dey chop:
Governors of Nigeria are eating (stealing money).
    And President go dey chop:
The President of Nigeria is eating (stealing money)
When dem say make we jump, we go jump
: Yet, the masses follow blindly. When they say jump, we'll jump.
Some people go somersault: Some people, probably law enforcement will go above and beyond to protect corrupt leaders.
Dem get headache we go drink Panadol: Panadol is a medicine for curing headaches in Nigeria
, People are taking a lot of it.
Meanwhile president go dey chop: Meanwhile the president is eating (stealing money)
    And Governor go dey chop
: And Governors of Nigeria are eating (stealing money)
    "Dey There oo
    "
In Nigeria, "Dey There" means remain/stay there, meaning that you are not thinking right. For example if someone says "I can get away without paying my taxes", you can say "Dey there" as a response.
    Verse 1
No be for here wey dem born Jesus ehee
: Jesus was not born in Nigeria
My country problem e pass Jesus
: We have problems in Nigeria that are bigger than praying to Jesus.
Because na we be our own problem ehee
: Because we are our own problem (we the people).
Na who go come reason well? (well, well, well)
: Well, who is thinking and reasoning?
    Verse 2
Na who? Na who dey here?
    : Who is here?
    Money dey here
: The Money is here. (Nigeria is actually one of the richest countries in the world based on natural resources).
    The Thiefi thiefi come major
: But the thievery and corruption is so much
Wey make the suffer come dey here?
: And now suffering is our reality.
    Suffer yapa mukutun, brukutum
: There is a whole lot of suffering going on.
    Wey dey make people sukun
: It's making my people cry (Sukun means cry in Yoruba).
Tukutum, won ni inu won o dun
    : People are not happy
    Brukutum, suffer yapa mutukum
: There is a whole lot of suffering going on.
The people do you well well
: The corrupt politicians are stealing your money and being unjust to you.
And dem dey laugh you well well
: And they are laughing at you.
Them sef dey flenjor well well
: They are really enjoying (The corrupt politicians).
    Yeah, yeah ooh
    My people suffer well well
    : My people are sufferring
Police dey slap here well well
: Police are slapping people (police brutality)
Hungry dey wire dem well well
    : People are hungry.
    Verse 3
My people self dey fear too much
: My people are too afraid.
We fear the thing we no see
: We are superstitious and we even fear the things we can't see. Supernatural stuff.
One day all of us go die
: Yet, we will all still die one day.
We always get reason to fear
: Despite that, we'll find a reason to be afraid.
Fight for your right o you go to fear
: You are even afraid to fight for your rights.
Police go slap you, you go to fear
: When the police slap you and treat you unfairly you are afraid to fight back.
Fight for your pikin dem no go to fear
: You don't even fight for your child/children.
You go dey fear fear fear
    : You are too afraid.
Meanwhile, president go dey chop. (So sad)
    (The End).
I really hope things get better in Nigeria. This country is going through a lot.
Update: On Tuesday, October 20th 2020. The Nigerian Military opened fire on peaceful protesters for demanding better from the government. This song remains relevant as ever. 💔💔💔💔🇳🇬

I know I’m late to the show, but as they say better late than never. I started listening to Burna after I saw his monsters video. I was actually looking for something else and the video came up in my feed. I’ve been listening to his music since. I appreciate his authenticity and his love for his culture and country. I’m originally from Haiti 🇭🇹 living in the US, even though I’ve been here for over 30 years, the love I have for my country and my culture, especially the music never fades away. It actually gets stronger as I get older. I watched your show at MSG it was amazing. Burna, continue to stay true to who you are, your originality sets you apart from the rest. 🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬

One of the best qualities I love about Burna is that he doesn't have a bunch of half naked women twerking their behinds neither on stage at his shows or in his videos. This speaks volumes to who he is as an artist. You almost would expect it because he's young, handsome, and rich, it's like he wants you to know who he is and not let naked females be the main focus of his art and I'm a woman and this makes me love this man even more along with the fact he seems to be humble. Peace, Love and Blessings Oluwa Burna from MD🥰🥰
