  • Bobcat hydraulic cylinders with friction welded fittings can break and leak hydraulic oil. The damaged fitting can be cut off and a new fitting welded on. I've seen fittings broken on excavator cylinders and loader cylinders.

    Just found this, good info. Got a Bobcat skid steer bucket tilt cylinder with a broken fitting similar to that. Time to fix it! Thanx!

    Only suggestion I would make is to go with a fitting that is designed to be welded. But...if your not having issues and it works....it works. Would also suggest tig welding if possible. I know this is not feasible in the field but it would be the best option. But look man...GOOD JOB....AND THE GUYS THAT GET IT DONE ARE THE ONES THAT ACTUALLY LEARN WHAT THEY CAN AND CANT DO.

    Glad to see you took the cylinder apart. I have a forklift II bought used, The tilt cylinder someone tried to repair like your video but did it in place with oil in the cylinder. The weld did not hold and who ever did the repair continued to try to overlap welds. The weld when heated kept drawing oil into the repair and .... ya it will not hold with oil contamination. Thank for great video of how to do it right.

    I have a Bobcat 709 backhoe that wasn't used much & it has some rust on the rods for the arm & bucket. I am planning on cleaning them up with 400 & 600 grit emery cloth. If the rods are pitted too deep, what would you recommend?
    Thanks!

    My Kubota FEL sprung a leak on the fitting where the hex meets the body of the fitting. I’m wondering if the ring where the hex meets the fitting body could be welded.
    I’m curious why the hex is there. Is there a rubber o-ring inside that could create debris when welded?
    Great video.

    Hey bud, thanks for posting this video. what spanner wrench did you use to get the gland nut off? I've done this repair on other cylinders with a pipe wrench but the shoulder is too small. I'm forced to use the spanner wrench.

    Good evening, dear friends, I have a problem pulling my hair out. E55z is opening the shell, it takes up to 3 days to happen. I already changed the joystick but it didn't solve it, I looked at the command slice, spool, spring, and nothing solved it. Thanks in advance. I'm from Brazil

    • @tetradgroup

      It's just a plug sealed by o-ring. The fitting is not replaceable.

    can you do this on the thinner wall cylinders without warping the cylinder? also the hole you drilled is it the original size hole?

    • @tetradgroup
      @tetradgroup  Před 3 lety

      It's possible the cylinder may warp slightly but usually not a big problem. The drill but I used was just a clean out any debris in the original size whole.

      @@tetradgroup Is there any use in putting a wet rag around the cylinder to keep it cool as you weld it?

  • @pwilliamf

    We had the exact same thing happen to our Bobcat excavator thumb cylinder. I saw you welded the fitting right to the cylinder. I was wondering if your opposed to a threaded bung so if it happens again it would be an easy swap in the field, or after you weld the fittings it almost never is a repeat issue? Thanks for the video! My replacement cylinder was $800!

    • @tetradgroup
      @tetradgroup  Před rokem +1

      Only problem with a bung on some cylinders is once the fitting is installed it will stick out to far and be even more susceptible to damage. I like the fitting to be as low profile as possible.

  • @TheZigZiggy

    Since those fittings are threaded, why not drill and tap those holes and thread those in with red loctite?

    • @tetradgroup
      @tetradgroup  Před 3 lety

      The barrel is to thin to support a threaded connection unfortunately and if the connection goes past the barrel wall the piston can hit it when fully extended in either direction.

    • @TheZigZiggy
      @TheZigZiggy Před 3 lety +2

      Ah, good to know. If those connections are prone to breaking or wearing out then weld a nut on it so they can be easily changed in the future.

    PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, make sure you warn your viewers about the danger of using CHLORINATED brake cleaner prior to welding. It creates phosgene gas which WILL kill you. I would recommend using acetone instead, so you can be sure.
