    One thing about the Miles Shaw trade, when we shopped him, the cubs were offering another prospect with him, a younger outfielder (19) named Michael Torres. No idea how good he is, but it did add at least some additional depth for miller. I think maybe not trading him immediately in the off-season is fine, but I do still worry about his recovery. I won't harp on it, I'm not massively in love with Shaw either, just thinking about "getting something is better than nothing"
    In terms of other catchers: it wouldn't be a platoon, but either Joey Bart/Elias Diaz might work. Looking for similar amounts of money to McGuire, both have fantastic personalities and arm captains, but are more of an even bat, nothing amazing, but nothing terrible. I always like having a catcher captain, for some reason it "fits" better :)
    As always, great episode!!

      I agree that a catcher with a Captain personality does seem to fit well. I'll take a look at those guys too. I think a revamp at C is in the works!

    Hi ! I love the pics in IAFA. You are in a position where you have to "gamble" a bit on those choices. And the fact that you could land both of those players, minimizes the risks. Regarding the C position, I also tend to prioritize the defense and/or personality when it comes to average players. Maybe paltooning is the right choice. So, I don't think you could go wrong with McGuire.

    • @oldschoolsports
      @oldschoolsports  Před měsícem +1

      Thanks, I'm definitely leaning towards a platoon and changes at C next year... the only question is whether even one of last year's guys will be back at this point!

  • @Writeous0ne
    @Writeous0ne Před měsícem

    I do like Delauter and Marte, but you basically summed it up nicely. Whether you keep Miller or trade for one of those guys it's still a gamble. I'd say the biggest argument for trading is that your pitching has been good, so maybe trading for a future everyday player will be more helpful than a possible starter whos had no luck with injuries. It's a tough call.

  • @horticulturevulture3459

    I really liked the IAFA choices. 2 really interesting prospects to develop with great upside. Albrighton is a risk but with Montes it feels like a chance you can take.
    Not trading big Maso doesn’t feel like a bad idea. The returns aren’t can’t miss and the potential he comes back to be an ace is about as good or better than any of the other risks with what needs to be given up.
    I’m a fan of Maguire at catcher as a short term choice. Probably the best of an okay bunch to choose from.

    I like chase delauter for miller. I also like mcguire at C. Both of those guys make good contact and play defense so that will go a long way towards raising the floor of this team. IAFA was great, though drafting a fragile DH is not something i would have done, even with the plus bat and makeup. He is definitely going into the conditioning lab every year for the next 5 years!😀

    • @oldschoolsports
      @oldschoolsports  Před měsícem +1

      I hear you on our new "fragile DH". My initial inclination was to go with the SS Orta instead of Albrighton, but I do love Albrighton's personality and high ceiling. The scouting team helped convince me to go with Albrighton, and Orta does look a lot like our IAFA SS from last season, Rodas, which also helped push me a bit to bring a different skill set onto the farm. I'm definitely intrigued my McGuire too, I think I could do worse than a platoon of him and Langeliers... of course, I could also do better, but that would be very expensive!

  • @johnhunter488
    @johnhunter488 Před měsícem

    Great job with the IAFA signings! The DH wouldn't have been my first choice but I think you got very good value landing both of those guys. If he does develop you could always use him as a trade chip to get something else you might need...
    I think I'm onboard with bringing McGuire in to platoon with Bangoliers especially on the cheap and if he doesn't work out...well, next man up!
    And seeing the returns continuing to decline perhaps you're better off waiting for Miller to return and reevaluate again once (or if) he returns to the mound.

    • @oldschoolsports
      @oldschoolsports  Před měsícem

      Agreed, we definitely have some flexibility with both Langeliers and Banfield still having options, so I think we'll be exploring some options behind the plate!

  • @whyme943
    @whyme943 Před měsícem

    I think I like McGuire in a platoon role. Really wish you’d checked his career splits, that could provide more clarity. I’d even consider trading Langlears considering that he’s more expensive than the comparable free agents. Tomas Neto might be someone to go after in that role.
    Also, HOLY CRAP that’s a good IAFA class. Nicely done. I know I liked Orta better, both for the injury proneness and the better defence, but if you need to I think Albrighton could compensate for a Nick Ahmed type, even over Orta.

    • @oldschoolsports
      @oldschoolsports  Před měsícem

      Ha, I have looked at the splits, just didn't include it in the video! I'll try to remember at the start of the next one. I kind of liked Orta better too, but given that he was looking for $400k more than Albrighton, I don't think it's guaranteed that I would have been able to get both him and Montes if I had explored the other path. But something else I'll never know!

  • @Writeous0ne
    @Writeous0ne Před měsícem

    Albrighton all day! with that personality type and the potential, i would say it's odds on that he can be strengthened in the dev lab with outstanding or excellent success.

    • @oldschoolsports
      @oldschoolsports  Před 29 dny

      The personality is definitely tempting... stacks the odds in our favor for regular development and in the lab!

  • @paulwest3905
    @paulwest3905 Před měsícem

    I should have looked closer at C names, yes McGuire was the one, not Raleigh. I say go for it so you have a Captain at a anchor position (not to mention he isn't all that expensive). Then look for a Catching prospect in the draft this season for long term.
    Regarding Miller, your assessment is good I think based on the mediocre trade needed, and in a waffle of my own I wouldn't want to push Miller out the door on a Meh deal only to see him "right the ship" and have success at another team. I guess I was thinking you could get some good prospects for him but it doesn't look that way, I don't care for the offers either.
    Solid risk play in the IAFA, as you said you should be able to work on mitigating the Fragile status on the one guy and you still got the other too. Nice!
    Look forward to the next episode (and at 60yrs on June 3rd, I enjoyed the Steve Austin $6M Dollar Man reference!).

    • @oldschoolsports
      @oldschoolsports  Před měsícem +1

      I really liked Orta too... one thing that kind of got me to go the other way was that we got the SS Rodas in IAFA last year, and he's a pretty similar player... a bit better glove, not quite as good a bat...

    like the others, i like the IAFA choices (especially since i suggested both players). I think there's a good chance they develop well enough to matter in this playthrough. unless you get a new owner, you will definitely need home-grown stars with potential like those two guys. i think my approach with a team like the A's would be to aim for as high upside as possible in IAFA, but in the draft looking for higher floor guys who can become average to slightly above average major leaguers. regarding Miller, i think i like trading for DeLaughter as the best option even if you need to include some other pieces. also, congrats on the significant growth in the channel over the past few weeks since the series started.

    When all the cards are on the table on the Miller case I tend to lean on that you should hold on to him and just hope he gets healthy enough to be the player he should be. In hindsight remember you quickly gave up on players in similar situations like this in you Buffalo series. Some really stuck to hunt you, the SS Mayer for one where you got stuck searching for a SS for years after. While Mayer returned and became an All-Star with another team. So maybe this time hold on since you're not all in on any of these trades.
    On IAFA I can't judge since the overall system is just crazy IMHO. Teams pay millions to a kid sitting over a kitchen table in an unknown little village on a small island somewhere in the Caribbean mostly. A fortune is on and it saves the villages for sure, but how many of these kids just go after the dollars and never produce anything. I know teams say it is worth it if finding a diamond in the rough, but then you should not pay these fortunes. Consider that after 3-4 years you know for sure what a player might turn into and looking back at the prize then. One might have gotten him for far less in a trade during that time. It's a huge lottery but the price for a coupon is huge. Maybe one should go cheap and just pick up lower valued players. If the game is true surely some of those should increase in ratings with proper training. Often it tends to play out like an auction, where folks outbid each others in a frenzy. Keeping a cool head is the thing maybe. Bottom line is my thoughts that those millions could be better spent on something else like extensions and/or salaries.
    Now that was my rant on IAFA.

    Can't finish right now, @ 23:00 so unsure what happened. The fragile IAFA at 16 seems awful to me. Not something I'd touch. This Mason Miller situation seems like you're being unrealistic to me and not considering the budget that Oakland has. Isn't he demanding some obscene contract despite being injured for the last year? What's the point of holding on to him? He should be traded immediately for a player that will accept an (undervalue) long-term contract -- some 21, 22, 23, 24 y/o type that has little or no MLB experience and isn't a top prospect but should be at least an above average player. These contracts also improve the trade value of the players. (don't you also have inflation on this time? so it makes them even better)

    • @oldschoolsports
      @oldschoolsports  Před měsícem +1

      Ha, it's definitely unlike me to go after the Fragile player too! Fragile or low Work Ethic are almost always immediate no-gos for me! Hoping some development lab magic and the fact he's likely to end up at DH or 1B will help me keep him healthy!
      I disagree about trading Mason immediately. He still has three arbitration years left after the upcoming season, so I'm not really feeling a lot of urgency to trade him for financial reasons. Making $2.6mm to sit out most of this year, and then potentially $5.7, $7.2, and $8.6 the seasons after that. So those numbers don't scare me at all if he comes back and hasn't declined materially. Him suffering another setback, or coming back a shell of himself and having no trade value... that's what scares me right now! I think I've decided to roll the dice and hope he comes back healthy, since I already can't even get any of the prospects I went through straight up for him!

I know that I have to create them myself. I know how to create them myself. But the new player has no idea what is going on until they are well into their sim. @@patrickdebonis6493 I'd honestly be happy if one year the only "enhancements" to the GM part of the game were fixing things like that, fan interest, reliever salaries, etc... but a lot of the developer attention each year seems to go to trying to upgrade in-game graphics from "ancient" to "out of date", updating Perfect Team, and add-ons like expanded IAFA or the Dev Lab that don't really seem fully integrated into the game on initial release.
