    2012's Dredd, even though Alex Garland is "only" credited as screenwriter, from various behind the scene reports, he was basically the director for all intend & purposes. And I still hope (eventhough I know very unlikely) he'll make a sequel or even a TV series of Dredd - with Karl Urban & Olivia Thirlby reprising their roles... It's such a massively under-rated movie!

    Probably the most talented underappreciated filmmaker in the modern era. And especially the films that he only written.

    Annihilation is such a great film. Excited to see Civil War. Sometimes filmmakers seem to fall out of love with moviemaking and all they need is to feel inspired and fall back in love with it, but hope he knows he’s made some great movies.

    He's got a very good filmography, could see him still working as both a novellist & screenwriter behind the scenes.

    I could see that film production could leave a director cleaved and bloody.Budget, scheduling, creative differences, technical issues, legal, stress and burnout. People are human at the end of the day. Too many odd appendages that grow out a sincere effort.

    John is referring to the Virgin Suicides directed Sofia Coppola. It is a very good movie, with Kirsten Dunst.

    I think what Alex meant by the statement, "filmmaking doesn't exist in a vacuum. It exists in a life and also in a broader context." Was that, for him, It's an all-consuming process and that he wants to focus on things without having a directors hat on all the time. I've met him during a Q&A screening when he was asked about being a director he honestly said he enjoyed the process to a degree but hated the constant shifting and pulling in different directions to make a film work.
    When he talks about retiring, I believe him, but I feel like he's too much of a storyteller to not stay retired.

    He's made some of my fav movies and Devs was incredible. I'd be sad to see him stop directing for a while, but he has to do what's right for him. Hopefully he may come back to it sooner rather than later.

    despite the acclaim "Civil War" is getting (and I'm not without my own personal reservations about the film with hearing what I've heard), I am A BIG fan of Alex Garland. And I don't want to see him quit directing. He's one of my favorite filmmakers when it comes to science fiction (along with Gareth Edwards, and I could go on about a few other names). And I wish he would at least Direct "Dredd 2" before it's too late.

    Love your show, but Dunst didn't star in "The Bling Ring". Emma Watson did. However, Dunst played the female lead in "The Virgin Suicides", which was Sofia Coppola's feature length directorial debut." That being said, keep up the good work and stay filthy.

    • @nikitaaverin
      @nikitaaverin Před 2 měsíci +1

      PS. When it comes to Garland, "Ex Machina" is an all-timer when it comes to sci-fi. And speaking of Francis Ford Coppola; he hasn't made a big movie for 25 years or so. However, he is in the works with "Megalopolis", which has been a passion project of his since the 1990's. So yeah, Garland will sooner or later return to the big screen as a director somewhere down the line.

    But the question is this: Does he plan to retire from screenwriting too? He's an exciting director for sure, but he's also a great writer, he's credited with writing, with (what I think is) the best zombie movie of the 21st Century in 28 Days Later, and Sunshine (an underrated science fiction horror movie.)
    Regardless, this is quite sad, because I loved 2 out of his 4 directed movies.
    Ex Machina: Great science fiction story.
    Annihilation: Foreboding, and atmospheric cosmic horror.
    Men: I did not like at all, I thought Jessie Buckley was brilliant in it, but I remember saying to myself "What the fuck" multiple times on my way home from that movie. I simply did not get it, and didn't like it. It was a prime example of a disturbing A24 movie with none of the payoff.
    Civil War: I have not seen yet.
