Ben The Coin Geek
Old Pueblo Coin
Heard a song on the radio about Ben and Old Pueblo Coin...
Was like-
You down with OPC, yeah you know me.
Good solid advice on collecting and doing it effectively within your budget. Thanks!
The hunt is half the fun.
I always know what I'm basically going for but I'm always looking for that something cool that I wasn't expecting to see for my collection over my stacking. Friday my something cool was a gold plated ASE. Not worth anything more but man does it look cool and made me a really happy camper. They also held another cool looking world coin for me because they thought I'd like it. It's pretty cool when my LCS holds coins off to the side they think I'll like. If I don't like it they put it back out for sale. They're pretty good at it though, not much goes back. I think the caffeine from my mountain dew is kicking in. I seem to be rambling on. I don't even remember what I was commenting on. Oh well. If you're a dad, Happy Father's day!
Always fun discussions! Flipping spoons for coins.
Happy Father’s Day! Every couple of years I’ll generally reassess and prioritize what fits in my collection and what I can part with. I’ll be at this year’s Summer FUN show and will take your advice on being more selective.
Thanks for the perspective Ben. Happy father's day !
This is good advice. Take your monthly coin budget and save it for a few weeks. If it’s 25 bucks a week, in two months you’ll have 200-225. In four you’ll have over 400. With that 400 bucks, you can get a nice for your collection, maybe the key date for a series, and then you can use that 25 to buy the common dates around it. I promise you, nothing feels better than getting the key date to a series and realizing how easy the rest of the series can be in comparison.
Great tips Ben. Thanks. Happy Father's Day
I am planning on having a yard sale soon.
Clothes, Cookware, Sports Cards and other Sports memorabilia !
Get rid of the Stuff and buy some more coins !
....it is especially difficult living in Europe and being a US Coin Collector. ...but my knowledge for Old European Coins has grown tremendously. What basically kills me ordering from the States is the shipping! 😲I have also been contemplating about joining PCGS or NGC because I feel that I have some pieces that I think should be preserved, but I cannot find anyone who can eventually give me a second opinion. Appreciate your channel! :-)
Good take. I'm positive I saw this in another of your videos but a review every year is good to keep it in the mind.
Some of the coins I want are in the 1 to 2k range and instead of buying coins at $50 here or $100 there, I'm having to use willpower to save for 1 really nice coin.
Maybe having a fewer number of really nice coins is better than a Smaug hoard of more common stuff. Saves on storage too.
After listening to you talk about this in a previous video, I don't get drinks if I eat out. That saves $3-$4 bucks each time. Eating at home also saves more too. Easily hundreds in a couple of months.
Excellent advice Ben.
I buy and sell lots of Morgans, because the more I get through my hands the more I learn. I collect 1880-S Morgans because they are so beautiful and not crazy expensive for the most part. I like different Gen NGC/PCGS holders and Blanchard/ANA/Whatever else.
Hi Ben. I remembered to capitalize the H today, so I am eligible to win.
🥇🏆
thanks for the kick in the pants. i need to review my collection.sell some off for some worth grading
Hey Ben! Would love to hear about how you'd go about picking coins that you're giving as gifts to non-collectors!!!
I'm using birthday dates... coins that I like to collect... coins with high eye appeal... there's also a price range...
Outside of those factors, what else would you consider, any help is appreciated! Thanks!
Welcome back, Ben. Now you can cool it at home. HA! 111* ☀🕶😎🔥
I didn't know you would be at the Baltimore show until Friday. I went on Thursday but didn't see you. I'm learning to be selective such as only buying CAC coins or from dealers I trust that cherry pick coins.
The coin dealer says to buy more expensive coins? Got it! 🙂
Great video and some great points.
Totally agree re desirability of adopting a “coin collecting philosophy” early on. IMHO, you are either a collector or an “accumulator.” A collector typically adopts rules for their hobby (some of mine: will only collect coins made of precious metals - no copper or nickel; will not collect anything with an identifiable person on it - president, celebrity; will not collect anything Barber, etc). An accumulator buys anything that suits their fancy. There are endless ways to collect !
Ben for president! Let me know if you come across a PCGS high relief 1907 Saint Gaudens with a minimum grade of 63, but with a CAC green bean.
Hi Ben. Good thing I have a big nose. I'm addicted to oxygen. *>>-->* 🦉
Good advice. Happy dads day to you Ben, and all of us fathers, and all of our fathers (with all our/their shortcomings. Yes, by all means, turn that stash of mediocre Ike dollars that were gifted to you by your ex brother in law into something more substantial and gratifying. Let go of the dross, be free.
Happy Father’s Day, Ben.
Welcome back man happy Father’s Day
I either buy from the local coin shops, friends on IG or from Ben. eBay is so iffy.
Hey Ben
I know what I want to buy...when you put it up on your web site. ;)
Wow like one.
I was at the Long Beach show and saw a 1909S VDB in F12 for $800 . My budget for the day was $600 but i could have said hi to an ATM buddy . Not sure if i should settle for this grade or move up to a F40 ? I think i made the right move by not buying it . However it looked like a slightly higher grade , though I am no grading expert 🤓 i think buying this particular coin would be in a higher grade ?
Hi Ben, DCAM Graded copper coins why is DCAM not seperated into RD BN etc I have DCAM coins that are 1990-S PR70RD DCAM and the same coin 1990-S PR70DCAM yet when you look on PCGS they are grouped together under DCAM with no seperation.
How does sterling typically sell? Is it typically by oz?
Duck season. Wabbit season.
Must have taken a wrong turn at Albuquerque.
Hello - I just purchase an Indian cent grade by ANACS AU - 50 - It loooks very under graded to me - Who should I send it to for re-grading ? PCGS or NGC ? Thanks for your opinion
Totally off topic … I have seen you talk to some very influential people in the hobby so I will ask this of you . Can you please start asking people to pay even more attention to security in the community.
I might be paranoid 😂 but that is why I buy online only . I have a small business and it breaks my heart when I see a coin dealer have a 20 oz gold nugget stolen from the Long Beach show or elderly dealers get taken advantage of .
Elderly dealers should be surrounded and taken care of at shows .
They might just be hyping up every incident but I work so hard to save in precious metals . I am worried about going to shows . Maybe it’s cause I live in California 😂
Hello everyone, I want to wish you a great Father’s Day for you guys who are fathers
Thanks!
This morning, my daughter asked for money to “buy you something”.
♥️💯
1st like!!
OK, send me invoice for squarish spoon for .65 per gram. Thanks
