weird comment warning - - But this is maybe the most British sounding song I ever heard. it's so casually eloquent. like when you hear British schoolkids on American TV and they speak better than most of Us over here do as adults.

    • @you2449
      @you2449 Před 2 lety +1

Not saying it's Led Zeppelin or Queen. It's just a fun and rhythmic Bop - which is good enough for me. (with some clever wordplay, between the gibberish parts).
      Anyhow - - I _said_ it would be a weird comment. ;-)

    • @frase03
      @frase03 Před 2 lety

Weirdly these guys are from Gloucestershire so it's sort of like the English equivalent of someone coming from somewhere like South Carolina so not the quintessential British accent at all.
By the way you should also check out their cover of I'm a believer EMF did with Vic Reeves, it's a great version .
The very early 90s was a fantastic time musically here in the UK with groups like EMF, Carter USM and Jesus Jones as have been mentioned in other comments but also the likes of Massive Attack, The Prodigy, Blur, James, The KLF and The Stone Roses to name but a few.

Love your reaction to this. This was a banger in the summer of '91 in North America, it hit #1. EMF were competing with another British rock/alternative band at the same time called Jesus Jones. Check out their songs "Right Here, Right Now" which hit #2 & "Real, Real, Real" which hit #4. The lyrics & sound on this are pretty clever. You don't even realize how many f-bombs are slyly integrated into the song until you read the lyrics LOL:
    Oh!
    (What the?)
    (What the fuck was that?)
You burden me with your questions
You'd have me tell no lies
You're always asking what it's all about
But don't listen to my replies
You say to me I don't talk enough
    But when I do I'm a fool
These times I've spent, I've realized
    I'm going to shoot through
    And leave you
    The things, you say
Your purple prose just gives you away
    The things, you say
    You're unbelievable
    Oh!
    (What the?)
    (What the fuck was that?)
You burden me with your problems
By telling me more than mine
    I'm always so concerned
    With the way you say
    You've always go to stop
To think of us being one
Is more than I ever know
    But this time, I realize
    I'm going to shoot through
    And leave you
    The things, you say
Your purple prose just gives you away
    The things, you say
    You're unbelievable
    Oh!
    (What the?)
    (What the?)
    (What the?)
    (What the fuck was that?)
    Seemingly lastless, don't mean
    You can ask us
    Pushing down the relative
    Bringing out your higher self
    Think of the fine times
    Pushing down the better few
Instead of bringing out the clues
To want the world and everything your asked to
Brace yourself with the grace of ease
I know this world ain't what it seems
    (What the fuck was that?)
    (It's unbelievable)
You burden me with your questions
You'd have me tell no lies
You're always asking what it's all about
But don't listen to my replies
You say to me I don't talk enough
    But when I do I'm a fool
These times I've spent, I've realized
    I'm going to shoot through
    And leave you
    The things, you say
Your purple prose just gives you away
    The things, you say
It's why I love you more
    The things, you say
Your purple prose just gives you away
    The things, you say
    You're unbelievable
    Oh!
    (What the?)
    (What the)
    You're so unbelievable
    (What the?)
    (What the?)
    You're unbelievable
    (It's unbelievable)
    Oh!

Surprised they did anything your side of the pond,I know they were massive in England and Australia but it was such a British sound, and sometimes, our whimsical music doesn’t travel well over there, the kinks being a classic example of being too English for American audiences.

  • @FloatingAnarchy61
    @FloatingAnarchy61 Před 2 lety +5

EMF were from a town called Cinderford in the Forest Of Dean, Gloucestershire. I live in Gloucester which is just up the road. We used to tell jokes about Foresters, similar to Irish jokes that used to be popular. For example, What's the definition of a virgin in the Forest? Someone that can run faster than her brother. It can be a very tough area in parts, and joking aside, I've met some great friends from the Forest over the years. Ian Dench, the guitarist was a bit older than the rest of them. He was born in Cheltenham, but lived in Gloucester. He used to be in a band called Apple Mosaic, who used to gig a lot around Gloucester. I remember seeing them in a few pubs in Gloucester at the time. Even then his talent was obvious. He's now in demand as a hotshot songwriter and has written songs for Beyonce among others. Not many bands make it from this part of the world, as opposed to London, Manchester or Liverpool. Of course you've got Bristol, with people like Massive Attack, Portishead, Roni Size, Tricky, and more recently bands like Idles. Bristol being the biggest city in the region though, kind of overshadows the rest. So it was a great source of pride when EMF were so successful, especially when this song hit no 1 in America.

I'm from Cheltenham. I remember very clearly the day my mum told me there was this new band from the Forest of Dean that were going to be on Top of the Pops that night, and I tuned in to watch them, and I was in hysterics because I thought they looked so daft. A few days later I was one of their biggest fans, and theirs was the first live concert I ever went to, aged 13, at the Gloucester Leisure Centre (my friend's mum, bless her, had to go with us as we were too young to go alone). I'm glad they got at least one international hit, but would have loved Children to have been bigger. Long live the new flesh.

@@funkmasters We've probably bumped into each other in the past. Don't you think the music scene is a bit barren nowadays in Glos. The Guildhall is a great venue, seen the likes of Primal Scream, Radiohead and Robert Plant in the past there. You still get the odd band, but it's mostly tribute bands nowadays. Places like the Hops and British Flag were kicking back in the day.

I remember getting the 7" single on cassette when this came out. You couldn't even get the full album at that point. I eventually got the album and the CD maxi single that had some remixes with a guest rapper. I had a mixer at the time and my friend and I made our own remix of the song. I wish I still had a copy of the remix we made. Good times. :)

Pop Will Eat Itself is another good one, ‘Ich Bin Eine Ausländer’ & ‘Everything’s Cool’ particularly.

Memories!! I'll say! I have been trying to remember sporadically over the years...30 to be exact... what band I saw live at Carnegie Mellon University in November 1991. As soon as I saw that you reacted to EMF-Unbelievable, before I even watched the video, I knew that was the band! Thank You! I Googled it and sure enough it was EMF at Carnegie Mellon in 1991!! I actually remember dancing to the song Unbelievable on a crowded dance floor. IT was a smallish venue they played on campus. I think it was like a theater type room or a dance hall. I can remember everyone going crazy dancing and bouncing into one another when they played this song! Again! Thank You! Every once in a while, I would rack my brain trying to remember what band it was that night. I was 25 years old and apparently one of the few Americans to see this band live. As this was their only tour in the US. And I vaguely remember that their lead singer did not perform that evening or he was out. But the song sounded just as good!

It's been an absolute indie disco classic for 30 years now here in the UK, and I suspect it always will be!
EMF stood for Epsom Mad Funkers, fact fans.
They never followed it up with a comparably big hit (it made #3 in the singles charts here as their debut) in their initial run, but they reappeared from nowhere in 1995 to score another #3 hit with a riotous cover of the Monkees/Neil Diamond classic I'm A Believer with comedians Vic Reeves & Bob Mortimer. It's still the definitive version of that song to me :)
