I feel I need to correct one small thing. It's important for people to know that SHINee never took time off. (They weren't inactive for a year after Jonghyun's death, they only took a couple months off to grieve and to regroup.) Two months after Jonghyun died SHINee held their SHINee World Concert 2018 -- The Best From Now On concert in Japan, and only 5 months after his death they had their official comeback with their album The Story of Light, which celebrated their 10th anniversary. And they had a full sleight of activities and promoted like normal. Even through their grief they never skipped a beat. It was important to them to be there for Shawols and to show us that they wouldn't give up or stop being SHINee as a tribute to Jonghyun and to honor him, so they purposefully made an effort to keep moving forward and not stop their activities for too long.

Thank you for this lovely video, Michelle Hawk! Thank you also, Milinda, you make an excellent point: they had no break to grieve properly. Also, that part about Taemin being called tone deaf is something I'm sure Shawols would like to forget. It's obvious that he was talented musically by the way he plays piano by ear, and a tone deaf person could never do that. I think it was an exaggeration made and repeated by proud Shawols who wanted to make the point that Taemin worked very hard to get to where he is today: from having no lines or only the chorus lines to training his voice to be selected as SM's first solo male artist from a group. He paved the way, as did SHINee and SHINee members, in so many ways. One last note is that, per Lee Soo-man, SuperM was not designed as a sub-unit.

I need to find the proof, but the group actually did say that about Taemin. It wasn't made up by fans. Maybe the translation is wrong in that they didn't use the exact wording of tone deaf, but they specifically did say he couldn't carry a tune. Taemin joined SM to be a dancer. He didn't actually want to be a singer originally. Neither did Minho actually.

It's truly impossible to not like all members of SHINee. They're incredible artists in every way and they're all individually popular and strong as soloists, especially Jonghyun and Taemin, but never outshine one another as 5. SHINee is so special to me, thank you for making such a wonderful and well researched video 💙
I've always wished people, especially the new fans and reactors, know SHINee on a deeper level, off stage, because their personalities, relationship and interactions with each other are worth knowing. That's the reason why I fell in love with them even more and hope others would see this side of them as well. So thank you for creating this. Much appreciated.😊
i think overall this is the best guide ive seen for shinee. ive been looking for a good one to send to people but most of them are either too memey or too brief, and for some reason all of the minho sections are just really lacking and make him out to be one sided, just saying hes 'the hot one' or 'the sporty one'. youve created a really nice balance of information and entertainment while keeping it under an hour. thats probably pretty hard to do so i admire that. the jonghyun section was really nice, its good to see the section that shows him as a member and then another that shows his and shinee's legacy. thanks for making this, ill be showing it to my friends lol

Once in a lifetime you get a group of people together that create a chemistry & synergy that makes history. SHINee is one of those groups. I never expected to get this emotionally invested in them the first time I heard Lucifer (the 1st SHINee song I heard). However before I knew it, I was a fan & never looked back. I love them as artists but I have great respect for them as people too. This is why they will always remain most special to me. You showcased their human side as well as their artistic achievements. Thank you for this guide & tribute to my SHINee guys.
You expressed EXACTLY how I feel about SHINee. This is what makes them special and different from plenty other groups. The intense synergy that gets created by the 5 unique individuals is like no other, and that humanity and realness that they show. They express their vulnerability just as much as their glory and I really appreciate that. Yay for SHINee!!!

I recently learned that vincero means I will win. I used to listen to that opera song sung by Onew many times a day when I was treated for depression. Yes, I can say that Onew's voice saved my life
Some facts about shinee that weren’t in this video
- shinee we’re the k-pop group that made coloured jeans trendy
- shinee made video dance practise popular (with taemin iconic shirt and the iconic cloud background) to the song ‘lucifer’ and while they weren’t the first group to do it, they certainly made it a trend.
- Obama thanked shinee for helping with multiculturalism (or something like that)
- prior to debuting, they were originally going to debut as a rap group when producers noticed shinees talent for singing.
- shinees talents for singing and dancing live are truely phenomenal, with them gaining acclaim for it
- they suck at lip sinking.
- jonghyun was one of taemins main trainers, which is why taemin ended up taking a lot of jonghyuns parts, because they sound similar and also because he was lacking lines in the beginnings.

- after jonghyuns passing, a rare event happened in our night sky where the moon turned pearl aqua (not sure if it was an edit or not, don’t think it is, I’ll do more research into it)
- taemin is now on military service
- it’s now been 5ish years since jonghyuns passing, may he Rest In Peace.
*SHINEE is still going strong to this day even with all the trials and difficulties our boys have gone through. I truely hope for their happiness and for them to be able to continue doing what they love.*

I'm very thankful for this video! It is the most perfect introduction to Shinee. I'm so proud of it! However, the fact that Jonghyun was one of the main people who worked with Taemin is the biggest fact that I feel was really necessary in this video. Minho and Key's dynamic was shown and I wish that Taemin and Jonghyun's dynamic was shown as well (Jong being president of Taemin's fan club 😂). I believe it's important bc it shows how truly brilliant Jong is. With Taemin's hard work, Jong took Taemin from tone deaf and barely any lines, to one of the top selling solo artists from a kpop group. For Taemin to go from "tone deaf" to being able to pull off Jonghyun's parts (which are usually pretty difficult) is a true feat. I'm extremely proud of our maknae and our incredibly talented, creatively brilliant, intelligent, sensitive angel, Jonghyun. He truly did so so well!
I'm barely 3 minutes in and I've already liked the vid because ONEW 🥺 Finally a good Shinee guide that shows each members good qualities and struggles PROPERLY. I hope your video gains traction among new fans. We really needed a new updated guide. Please make a more in-depth guide for each member and maybe songs too idk hahah

I think for surface level stuff, there are popular guides out there who do a great job of it. But I think I’m terms of showing newer fans what their personalities and dynamics within the group are, this guide does a far better job explaining. Not only does it highlight all their achievements and talents, but it also explains a lot of the hard work and obstacles each one of them had to go through in order to become as successful and respected as they are now.

I absolutely adore how you include Key’s speech in “I live alone” with their Diamond Sky performance. It’s my favorite stage from them because it shows such a bond SHINee has. Also, what Key said must be noted down for anyone planning on support SHINee.

Hello, it's amazing, but I need to rectify something, you said they took some time of and a year later they came back, but they didn't take 1 year after what happened to Jonghyun, 2 months they did the show in Japan that was already sold out but it became a tribute to Him and they needed to re-record new songs without his voice for their 10th anniversary, except for one that still left his voice there, "The story of light" part 1 was released 5 months after Jonghyun's death on May 28, 2018, remember that Onew went to the military in December 2018 coming back last summer
the only group which i don't have an ultimate bias as i love them all equally ❤️ also, member for eternity ❤️😭 btw if not mistaken, taemin was not given part at the time because of his puberty's voice change
For me SHINee are the one's that bought colours to my life. I was soo much depressed cause I didn't had anyone to share my feelings. But one day I found them. Till now whenever I hear their songs I feel so much better. But the thing that hurts me is I found SHINee in 2019 and I was not able to attend their concert as 5. Even now also I can't go cause I am just 13 years old but I have promised my self I will stay strong and attend their concert in future. And I want all shawols to remember Jonghyun oppa for his happy moments not for the other reason ( I hope you understand the reason) . To all the shawols out there be safe,happy and keep supporting SHINee

Something i've seen some others mention but not enough, jonghyun's part of this guide was relatively shorter compared to the others and was mainly sad. the other's was pretty detailed especially taemin's. there is so much about him and his talents that weren't highlighted at all and i honestly feel like a much better job could've been done on jonghyun's part.

They really taught us to not forgetting about Jjong. Forever shinee is 5, it's just one of them has become an angel and rest peacefully. SHINee's dinamic is so great that it's quite hard to like only one of them. When u get to know them, u literally like every single one of them bcs they are very different in many aspects, it makes u curious about each of them so in the end it's hard to choose ur bias lol
imo, SHINee is a very unique group. They never failed to amaze me every single time, even when they go solo they keep surprising me with new things. They are truly amazing. Their energy, their vibes, their hardwork, even seniors give them thumbs up for always giving their all in everything.
It's unquestionable that younger idols look up to them.

my only issue with this guide is that jonghyun’s part was shorter than the others
there was a lot of things you could’ve added to the guide and you actually didn’t have to make this with a sad/heartbreaking way.
I agree. I love this guide, but I feel like it focused too much on the sad aspect of it. The section of Jonghyun's talents/personality felt much less significant compared to the mental health, etc. addressed (though it's great to bring up! Just maybe not as much of it). Although I'm sure the creator meant no harm, I feel like if a new shawol were to see this, I wouldn't want them to think of Jonghyun in a sad light- too many do so already. For constructive feedback, I think it would've been great if perhaps, Jonghyun's SNL moments, his kazoo, hell- even his book! That sorta thing was prioritized over his death, and maybe treated him more like the other members. I also agree that this didn't have to be heartbreaking, nor end on a sad note. I would've loved to see some more emphasis on their discography, etc.
P.S. Creator, if you do see this, please don't take it too personally, but these are just some things that I wanted to say!

his personality is a lot more than the shared on this video ! he is as savage as kibum he is as sweet as onew he is sexy and “swag” too hehe!

why did you make jonghyun's segment so short skipped so many things about him and made it tragic. and did you have to put a whole segment about members talking about thier grief

I agree with putting a warning for those that can't handle it. I sent this to a friend and told her not to watch the last 3:40 of it bc she's a highly sensitive person. However, I'm glad she included it in this video, especially key talking about it being OK to miss him. I thought it was well done. Maybe include a few more positive things about Jonghyun's personality to balance it out.

This guide is old now :( there are updated ones. I personally like the one by Michelle Hawk although it has a few small misinformations. It's a bit long though. There's also a fanmade documentary about Taemin as an artist that's very interesting that delves into his artistic mind.

i started listening to kpop cos of SHINee and have been a shawol since 2019 but wow, there are still lots that i don't know. thank you for this guide
I believe this story of Taemin being labeled "tone deaf" has been debunked as a myth (afterall, why would an agency sign someone to an idol group if they couldn't sing). Instead, SM waited for his voice to change before giving him heavy vocal parts so his vocal cords wouldn't be damaged (this is what Taemin has been saying in interviews). He was very young at debut after all.
It's not a myth, Taemin said himself people would call him tone deaf. Also agencies will sign idols on for rapping and dancing in place of singing, there's lot of idols out there that can't sing....
Key and taemin both joined SM on the strength of their dancing. Taemin didn't even want to be a singer. He wanted to be a dancer. Minho was approached by an SM agent bc of his looks alone. The entire group was originally supposed to be a rap group bc they weren't strong singers. These entertainment companies have straight up said looks is the priority, talent can be trained.

I feel like you did Jonghyun a disservice here. He got only a few minutes compared to the rest and half his time was "showing off" trauma from the other members. I didn't like it. You didn't even mention Blue Night, the book he got published, how he could be as savage as Kibum, how Jonghyun and Minho had the original "Tom and Jerry" dynamic, how much he wrote, how he created his own albums, his artistry, how close to and supportive of Taemin he was... none of it. Why?

And they would be in some other place today but they lost jonghyun and the emotional trauma they faced was so huge and also they were enlisted in military too
So that's why bts rose like this and also the madness of social media ,CZcams views etc are more important now
Also bts don't follow the rules of their country like shinee did
Shinee were so damn successful when they enlisted in military but they didn't behaved like a celebrity
On the other hand bts keep getting out of it again and again
And also everyone says bts paved the way for kpop artists which is again not true
Shinee had already started selling records and concerts since 2009 in USA,EUROPE,JAPAN ETC.
And what bts are doing right now in their concerts is something shinee already started since their debut
They were way ahead of time.
No hate to bts or anyone but couldn't help saying it
Shinee faced something so huge and even after that they came back very strongly
The kpop industry scenario might have changed or the criteria of everything might have changed but im proud of them for always trying to come back and always staying away from trashy race
I respect them so much for being the same legendary shinee
And yes i feel bad that they don't get the recognition and success they deserve but no matter what I will always be a shawol and I will always wish for their happiness and success
