Why You Need a Spinning Rod for Bass Fishing

  • Spinning gear has long been overshadowed by heavier casting gear, especially so with southern bass anglers. True enough that baits too big for conventional spinning outfits catch bigger fish in a lot of scenarios, but the advent and adoption of finesse techniques has become a huge factor in tournament and recreational fishing success alike.
    Florida native Terry "Big Show" Scroggins shares several reasons why you need a spinning rod rigged, and his favorite do-all combo for all the popular finesse tactics. This single rod, reel, and line outfit will allow you to skip docks, fish shaky heads, drop shot, Neko and wacky rig with ease while reducing the number of rods you carry in the boat.

    Too many people think you upgrade from spinning reels when you learn baitcasters. Each has it's place, depending on technique and application.

    I’ve been telling a bunch of my fishing buddies about how good this setup works! I think a lot of people for some reason don’t try this and are missing out big time!

    that advice on leader length is really good advice. I recently learned that my self. I noticed I had a lot better sensitivity and connection with my bait after switching to a longer leader. I didn't know why, now I do.

    I started with a spin cast and then upgraded to a spinning reel and it is night and day! I have two spinning rods now and the smaller one is set with an 8lb line and it casts like a dream. My 7ft spinning rod is set up with 15lbs so it’s amazing at fishing deep but it does not cast as far as my 6” spinning rod set up. I love having both but either is a better fishing experience than the spin cast I started with.

    A smart fisherman should master both spinning and baitcasting. They are both equally important to my fishing.

    After throwing a crankbait on a bait caster for 3 straight full days, I want to use a spinning rod. What spinning rod do you recommend for throwing a spro rock crawler or my wiggle wart (big and little)?

  • @dmm3124

    A fly rod is also excellent for big bass. They are even better for dropping weedless poppers into the holes in lily pads.

    For a long time i used a 4'6" ugly stick ultra light for everything. Senkos, jigs, topwaters, rooster tails, frogs, hell anything youve got that lil ultra light would throw it lol

  • @freddyj5845

    So you recommend 20-30ft of leader? That doesn’t cause issues in the spool when the leader mixes with the braid?

  • @FISHINandJUNK

    I've switched my spinning rods to the Japanese BFS (bait finesse system) which is tuned, shallow spool baitcasters that are capable of throwing tiny lures. I can easily skip weightless plastics with it with light braid on a M/L rod. Some guys even use them for tiny trout lures.

    • @ThatsBS1
      @ThatsBS1 Před 6 lety +2

      Pakayakbassin exactly!! That's all I use is spinning reels and with the latest innovation for saltwater spinning reels it's coming down to everyday use! Their drag is better, their retrieve is overall faster, the folcrom point is better balanced. Realistically it's baitcasters on the way out and I'm surprised no one has seen that. Hell I'm switching all my pike rods to spinning. No birds nest and I can cover more ground faster!

    • @tonyricperez3214
      @tonyricperez3214 Před 6 lety +5

      Herbert Wilke I'm saying the opposite. I've swapped all my spinning gear to finesse baitcasters that can easily throw tiny lures.

    • @ThatsBS1
      @ThatsBS1 Před 6 lety

      You're nuts!! I guess it all comes down to the task at hand really. Where I'm at I can't do that. Lure is too small and the trout are too finicky in the streams. But tight lines!

    • @tonyricperez3214
      @tonyricperez3214 Před 6 lety

      Herbert Wilke I can't stand spinning gear, now with the new finesse baitcasters there's literally nothing that spinning gear can do better when it comes to bass.

    If you’re fishing deep, just go with fluorocarbon entirely. I bounce jigs and plastics around some of the deep reservoirs here and use 10lb fluoro on a MH composite rod. When I’m 20 to 40 feet down with a 1/2oz lure, braid doesn’t make that much of a difference. When I’m fishing through weeds and stuff, that’s where I use braid so that I can transmit all the energy down the line to pull the lure out of the weeds (because braid has no stretch).

    • @MrJacksjb
      @MrJacksjb Před 6 lety

      To me fluoro on a spinning reel is going to twist and jump off the reel eventually unless I change it every few weeks. I do like Scroggins and put on 14lb braid and a fluoro leader and never have any problems.

    I’m looking for a spinning rod. I don’t know if I should get a medium or a medium heavy? I would use it for dropshots, wacky rig, finesse stuff, and small crankbaits/jerkbaits.

      One other thing I may add is the fact your using braided line which you have so much more strength. That is the main reason why I would choose medium heavy!

    This guy used to hate spinning rods for the dumbest reason ever. I’ve literally never had that issue unless I was using some 20 dollar Walmart rod. Yet I backlash nearly every time I fish even with a dc setup

    • @Wired2Fish

      Just goes to show that fishing throughout the nation introduces us to all sorts of new ways to fish. No doubt a pro angler needs a spinning rod in hand much of the time as fishing finesse presentations effectively calls for it.

    You Americans are weird, everything you do and like doesn't make sense, let's stick to reels and baitcasters. We, the people in europe love spinning reels and hate baitcasters, for the same reason you hate reels, the same technique you use for bait casters can be applied for spinners. I don't see what is the issue here, I have never tried baitcasters but I watched some vids and it's the same process with mastering one and the other. One has its pluses like the other, both are usefull for different applications, even for same application.

    • @Wired2Fish
      @Wired2Fish  Před 3 lety +2

      Hey now, your missing some scope here. This school of thought is more rooted in bass fishing and is geographically and seasonally specific even to that! We have a lot of species in the US and there are many that are better suited for spinning gear. Obviously you can catch pike on spinning gear but wouldn’t you throw a 25cm+ bait more efficiently on casting gear?? Not to mention battling a giant pike? Most baits are just better suited for casting gear in bass fishing and that’s how many anglers were raised. The rise of finesse baits has put a spinning rods in the hands of many these days. So the anti-spinning combo mentality is fading especially with younger anglers.
