That being said if you love cars, sim racing and realism RF2 is no brainer. It's the go to sim for engaging single player races. I've always enjoyed rF2 but found it to be complicated in every aspect. The old menus, the replays / cameras, the mod system with its packages, just everything seemed overly hard to like. Literally every other sim is better in those aspects but rF2 does have a great feeling so many racers give it a pass.

    "Why should I use 3rd party apps to play a sim game?" - Asks a guy who most likely uses content manager, shaders patch and all the other jazz for AC. The workshop syncing at the start of the game is actually pretty nice from my POV. In fact you don't need to do anything while the game keeps the workshop items up to date. Is see it as time that I have gained to do other stuff instead of checking forums if my mods are still up to date. :)

    • @ElShogoso
      @ElShogoso Před 2 lety

      I'm of the school of thought that you shouldn't need any mods or launchers whatsoever to get a fun experience out of a game, they should just be used to enhance the experience, optionally, after you're done with the default content. If you look at some of the classics like GTR2, the game didn't need any mods to be a complete game, it had all the basics: training mode (similar to gran turismo licenses, really good stuff), a complete championship mode, a complete track list and really well modeled cars for the time. That didn't stop the game from having one of the best modding scenes of all, time, but you didn't *need* any of that stuff to have fun with it. Same goes for Automobilista, game has a crapton of quality content out of the box (especially if you get it with DLCs) including multiple race series.

  • @justpostedagain
    @justpostedagain Před 2 lety +39

    The career mode thing seems rather an odd criticism to me. Which sim has a good career mode? ACC/AC/R3E/iR/AMS2: all of them just set up a few races in a row for you. I don't think career mode has much purpose in a sim. You practice tracks and you race the AI or online. You know you are progressing because you have to raise the AI rating or you are placing higher online. If that isn't enough to keep you coming back, then sims probably aren't your thing.
    Personally I love jumping into rF2 and seeing what I fancy every day. The range of options is immense. And gradually I get better, which is deeply satisfying.
    An online rating system would be great and I'm sure will come soon, but first we need to get player numbers up. You can't avoid slower cars if there is only one split.

      If you want career mode, buy Forza.

      Now again, people saying what we should play. Of course we can play forza (an arcade game) or Project Cars2 that has a decent career mode. But Rfactor2 has the best physics, best AI, best FFB, and I just want to play it offline in a career mode that never will be developed. Why? because not all people have the time to play and compete with other people, but love simulators as Rfactor2

  • @RoarMcRipHelmet

    The new UI is a big step up. The main reason why I rarely play rFactor 2 is because there are no camera options in VR - specifically it's not possible to lock to horizon, so instead the horizon bounces up and down while driving. I've gotten used to it, so I no longer get motion sickness from it. Still, most other moderns sims have some sort of lock to horizon feature.

    • @ViktorJaneba

  • @LeoDavidson

    Lack of real single-player game modes is a problem for so many of the sim racing games. It's a shame, and really weird given how little time should be needed to throw together a list of events and a progression system. (Something that could be done by junior team members, too, while the senior people still focus on the core sim.) I look at rFactor 2 and AMS2 and think they look like lovely simulations, but I would have nothing to actually do in them, other than random races. I want something to work through, and I only care about single-player (at least for now). Over in the non-sim racing area, there's loads to choose from, but the physics are unrealistic and support for proper racing wheel and ultrawides and correct FOV etc. is all missing. You can't win in either camp at the moment.
    Better, fairer, more human AI that doesn't ram you off the track or have superhuman performance in some situations (and lackluster performance in others, so you're constantly adjusting difficulty) would also be nice (at least in AC, which is where must of my experience is), but I can understand how that's a much harder problem to solve than adding a simple career mode, so I'm more forgiving of that.

    • @chrisl211
      @chrisl211 Před rokem

      I think the best single-player sim racer is Project Cars 2. The career mode offers a progression system in different series (GT, single-seater, TC, rally and prototype). Plus there are track invitation races and manufacturers events.

  • @karstenve
    @karstenve Před 2 lety +8

    rFactor2 is great but it's always been an ongoing project with a lot of promise that's never fully achieved (yet). I will be honest, I haven't played it for around 6 months. The main reason being that actually getting a great experience takes a lot of time and patience which I normally don't have. You could describe it as feeling very "raw" in every area which is a good thing sometimes but obviously it can also break the experience a bit in some situations or for some people. Once you get that great experience there is probably nothing like it. I love oversteery cars and rF2 is extremely oversteery. A bit to the unrealistic side for some situations but it feels great. I think it's a must have for any simracer.
    rF2 is updated pretty often. S397 is great and although they are a relatively small studio, they do a lot of work.
    Do try classic content. In my opinion this is where rFactor2 really shines. Especially the march and mclarens made by S397. They give an awesome feeling which I haven't been able to replicate in any other sim.

    All great points but I am surprised that you didn't mention the price in a discussion of worth except in passing. RF2 is significantly more expensive than all of its competitors except for iRacing. I have full versions (i.e. all DLC) of most of the major sims and simcade games (AC, ACC, AMS2, F1 '19 and '21, PC2, FH4, NFS, Dirt Rally 1 and 2) and I have only been serious about the genre for a couple of months. I often compare the same car and/or track between 2 or 3 games back to back to learn more about them or to perfect setups.
    I looked long and hard at iRacing and RF2 but I couldn't get past the limited content in the base versions and the cost of the DLC. Perhaps they will be more attractive over time.
    Given the hours that we spend in sim racing games, ultimately any sim racing game will be worth it in time. The more expensive games need either valuable features (like great multiplayer matchmaking) or the payoff will take longer.

      rF2 and it's DLC go on sale regularly. The discounts are substantial. I didn't pay significantly more for rF2 vs what I paid for AC or ACC. But if I take the amount of fun I got from the sim into consideration, then ACC scores the worst (zero fun, runs like crap on a vr headset..) AC is well worth it (hundreds of hours played) and rF2 is the best in my eyes. The most fun and best feeling sim, with just about the price of AC. (About one hundred hours played)

    Good video. I have played rfactor2 for 700 hours and I have to say I never had bad experiences in open lobbies. Maybe I had luck, but I played it very often in mp mode. But I mostly played it with official dlc content, because it's much better as free workshop mods. Maybe The paywall of official content is too high for crashkidz like in your video....! :-) Furthermore I think rf2 has one of the greatest AIs, so you can have very good races in sp. But the biggest con in my opinion is that there is no way to host a mp race local on your PC. In the former version with the old old ui this was possible. I could create mp sessions with or without AIs and have some fun with my steam buddies. But now.... Only dedicated server hosting is possible I think. And this was the main reason why I changed too ac, ams2 and acc now....! But 700 hours rf2 will stay in my mind. Driving and ffb is still very good!

And today Studio 397 announced Season 1 for racing online in the Competition System. The area where rfactor Realy gets unbeatable are those leagues. Take a look at things like vec, p1lms and virtual Lemans series and everything just clicks into place.
    Yes, rfactor is not the sim for the daily after work Jump into 3 quick and engaging online races, there are other sims for it that can do it much better. (iracing comes to mind)
    But for huge league's and endurance racing, rfactor is king.
    When you then already got some team mates, snd you train together on the track for the next upcoming race, it just feels so real, already in training. And the anticipation just raises till it reaches race day, and then you find your self in a grid with over 50 cars ahead of an 12h race, and it's just so well done. How the sun sets in the latter stages, the weather, the feeling of driving this car - it feels like just real racing, and that's where rfactor outshines every other sim.
    Yes, they are leagues for other Sims as well, but rfactor just is on another level in terms of endurance racing in leagues.

    @ZimmerZirwes Před 2 lety +1

    You should press "3". It hurts my eyes, that you didn't use the virtual mirrors. They are very well implemented.
    To rf2: Yes. It can be a beast. But it's the best sim out there in my opinion. The real weather plug-in is the best plug-in I know - because it uses teal data: But it uses it in real time. It's the only sim I know, that can change the weather during I race. So you have to check the weather forecast DURING a race. It's so damn immersive.
    S397 is working on a rating system. They will implement it. And the ui will be changed in the completion system, too.

      If you compare to AMS and AC, it does seem kinda pricey. AC gives you some nice laser scanned tracks as part of the base game, and AMS even with all the DLC is a cheap game when it goes on sale. RF2 also doesn't offer the multiplayer experience iRacing offers so they're not competing on the same ground.

    I've never driven a real racecar, but how I believe rF2 is the closest to the real thing out there. This is based on what I perceive visually from watching real races, real onboard footage and watching how the tires grip the track. No other sims out there have the tire feel that rF2 has. You can really push to the limit and still control the car, and the slides seem predictable and often saveable. I genuinely don't see why people rave about iracing, other than it has by far the best online ranking system and participation. Physics wise, I don't think it's there. Look at all of the drivers during covid that tried iracing for the first time. They all had complaints about the physics and iracing asked them to not publicly complain, but rather to contact iracing directly with concerns... Don't get me wrong, I play it from time to time and even streamed it live because the online participation is good and you can generally get close races, but if rF2 had the online system that iracing has it would be the superior sim.

    Rfactor 2 is my favorite sim. It just has the best steering wheel feel by far imo. I haven't played iRacing though, and don't plan to. It's the only one that allows me to dig more and more and feel exactly where I'm gaining that extra tenth, lap after lap. No guessing what the physics are doing at all. I only bought it last year after playing the original for five years in the 00s and my only regret is not doing so much sooner. It also supports simulated historical grids better than AC or Automobilista. If I want to run a championship I can keep a spreadsheet, not a problem. :)

Pricing... its fair, with fair DLC prices compared to iR, BUT.. to go online in official server, you are FORCED to buy ALL content. Like GT3 series.... you need to buy all tracks and all cars (even if you want to race one of them) ...and most frustrating is - a lot of time you must be IT specialist to put game together after install.

It’s not polished and a complete package but the feel of the tyres and track being alive isn’t present is any other sim like this. The engine is the best of all sims I’ve tried. Iracing is probably the only other sim that has anything on it which is the online community and track realism. Does feel as good though.
