I have both of these cameras, love them both. I don't think you mentioned it, but the FX30 can import LUTs, which I have found to be a game changer. I love the fact that you can see on the LCD the image with the LUT. Side note, the new free Sony LUTs by Josh Pines from Picture Shop are great and look awesome on the FX30. As far as LUTs for the a7iv, love the Phantom LUTs, they look great. To my eye, the FX30 color science looks better, but that's just my opinion. Love the a7iv as a hybrid camera and agree with everything else you mention in the video. Nicely done!
Yes, I did forget to mention the custom LUTs in this video. That is a great feature.
Would be nice, if Sony would also implement things like false color or waveforms. Even though you could load a false color lut :)
Wait for the next firmware update
Does in camera LUT bake that in or do you still need to apply and grade in post?
@@jaymills1720 no, it's just for monitoring. It's like the gamma assist, but with the luts of your choice
I'm truly enjoying your Sony videos. Keep 'em coming!
Glad you are enjoying them. Thanks for watching!
thanks for another great one! Can't wait to see these cameras compared with the Canon R6 MarkII
Bro ! Great video. Tons of good info here. Thanks 🙏
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Hey great video!! What about the noise performance at 4k 60 between FX30 and A7 IV? Thank you for great value videos 🙏
Just made a video on this topic as well. Biggest advantage of the FX30 is the price to performance when it comes to video. It’s such a great little video package. However, the more and more I think about it for me the A7IV is the better option. I just haven’t found myself using the 4K 120 on my A7SIII as much I thought I would and I really like having an EVF.
I had the fx30 but returned it. I didn’t need both but more importantly, there was a lot of grain in 4K 120 even if it was lit fairly well. I’m not sure why but the 120 slow ,mo has some pretty bad grain. The a7iv 60fps looks so clean so I’ll continue to use this.
It's because when you're at 120fps, you're reducing your shutter speed to 1/120 (terrible idea) or 1/240, you need to crank up the ISO to compensate, and because you're on a crop, you're no longer getting 7K downsampling. All of these things will increase your chances of grain.
If you increase your lighting to compensate of the shutter speed, likely you can keep your ISO lower, it'll still not be as good as a downsample, but it'll be better.
Let's not forget, a crop sensor has smaller pixels and therefore higher grain in general.
@@ronniebasak96yup! I def expected that especially on the crop sensor. But I figured if I added a good amount of light, it’ll be reduced. I had the light pretty blasted and still noticed a lot of grain. So it just couldn’t work for my use.
Thank you. Very objective and very interesting! I choose a7-4. And I buy FX3 XLR Top Handle for A7-4. It's great to work!
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Nice video man! I would be interested in more comparison between crop mode on a7iv versus fx30. I would love to be able to reduce my kit size by getting smaller lenses so I’ve actually considered switching from the a7iv to fx30 (or adding the fx30) just to use the crop lenses. But if the performance is the same, then I’ll just use crop lenses in my a7iv
Thanks! The 4K crop mode on the A74 is very similar to the FX30 since they are both oversampled. You will get more dynamic range with the A74 though.
@@Josh_Sattin thank you!!
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
thanks for the honest video , i have the sony a7iv and i really love this camera , and i was tempted to buy the fx 30 , but your video really convinced me . I will continue to get the most out of my Sony a7iv. thanks a lot man for helping me quit spending 1800 bucks and going back to a crop sensor lol 😂
You're welcome. Both cameras have their pros and cons and are both great cameras. Thanks for watching!
I'm happy with my FX 30 ❣️ thank you
I just got the fx 30 and absolutely love it
Nice! It's a great camera. Enjoy!
Over here in Germany the price difference is only 200 Euros. I already own an A7IV, but as I suffer GAS, I'd rather buy a FX30 than another A7IV :) but let's wait until the a7000 is announced, maybe this will be even a better fit to the A7IV
I am searching for a b-cam for my Fx6 and I think the fx30 could be a great option although it is an APSC cam
to be fair alot of the pros you mentioned for the fx30 isn't a pro at all, eg, ability to use apsc lenses, less rolling shutter, since a7iv can do the same and have even lower rolling shutter in apsc mode. regarding a7iv's overheating, it is only an issue if you do long form 4k60. no issues in full frame 4k24, and in apsc mode 4k24, it doesn't even get warm. the other fx30 pros like raw (1.3x crop), 4k120 (1.6x crop) are serious deal breakers and not relevant in real life usage. also needs to be mentioned is a 1.04x crop on fx30 in 4k24-60. I would even say a7iv is a better apsc camera than the fx30.
however the biggest fx30 pro is that "cinema" body, no-evf, tally lights, and fans makes it look different, not just a "dslr camera", and doesn't matter what some people will tell you, appearances are important. tho if Sony made a7iv in the fx3 body it would be a no brainer.
The Fx30 also lets you import and bake in whatever LUTs you want. It will still use slog3 and just put your lut on top of that. Which means you still get all the dynamic range benefits of slog3 along with the speed/turn around benefits of a baked in picture profile. It basically renders other picture profiles like s-Cinetone almost useless (unless you specifically like the look of scinetone). That alone is a MASSIVE difference between the fx30 and a74
SO helpful
Glad it was helpful for you. Thanks for watching!
Josh I intend to purchase the Sony A74 and then maybe the Sony FX30 or the Sony A7siii later down the line. Also the Panasonic S5 Mark 2 and a Panasonic S1H when the Panasonic S1H Mark 2 comes out as the Panasonic S1H will come down in price then.
i just got my FX30. It's a solid feeling camera. I use it along side my A7s3. However, thinking about moving to A7IV and return it. Simply because my lenses are all FF, and I hate NOT having an EVF. My biggest concern is the A7IV over heating. I shoot mostly outdoors, shoot 4K60. Just not sure if i can risk the liability of a camera which can overheat.
So fx30 for me because the a7iv doesn't like long shoots (weddings) in warmer Temps. Other than that it's a great camera. An amazing g hybrid for sure but I don't do photos. The fx30 pairs nicely with my a7siii
How do you find the two match up?
Love the video. I can get the A7iv for £2150 or the FX30 for £2100. Which would you choose. I'll be using it mainly for Travel and mostly video, but with a few photos now and again, like 90/10
A7IV i would say.. since travel would have less control over light...then, a full frame camera like A7IV would benefit more with less noise in low light condition...
Josh in 1080HD Crop mode the 120fps is sharper and looks alot like 4K on the Sony A74
Nice one Josh. I just want to know how the ergonomic is different. Specially the different grip and as a side note the placement of the joystick on the FX30 which seems to be odd. All whining about Sony's grips in the hand compared to Canon. But no one tells if the FX3 and FX30 are in the right direction or not?
Thanks! I personally do like the ergonomics of the FX3/FX30. I don't use the joystick so the placement on the top doesn't bother me, but it does for a lot of people. Probably more so when using the camera for photography.
Wow very good nice. I'm your fan+👍🔔
So what I'm hearing from this is "why not both?". My a7iii has a broken Mic in port, so I needed a reason to buy a new body. Went with an FX30, and I'm really happy with it so far. I'll send the a7iii to be repaired as it needs the sensor cleaned too, but after watching this, I think once it comes back repaired, I'll be selling it to go towards an a7iv.
After using the FX30, I want that flippy screen on my hybrid camera too, and seeing the a7iv can record 4:2:2 10 bit too, it might be useful for both of my camera bodies giving me similar footage.
Someone that has a a7iii as a A or B cam for video this makes sense.
How's the moire on these cameras
What?? You review cameras too? holleee cow man I just discovered this other channel today after watching the garden channel for years. It's so bizarre that you have this whole other interest, but I was always suspicious of the superb video quality coming from a farmer. Photography is another passion of mine as well.
Nice! Glad you found this channel too!
Great comparison thank you... Does the Active IBIS work with all lenses? So like if I throw on a Sigma or Zeiss lens for instance I am not going to get a warning saying ‘doesnt work with this lens’? Thanks.
You're welcome. Yes it should work. If you have a manual lens then you might have to go in there and manually adjust the focal length for the IBIS. There is a setting in there for that.
What happened to the A1? I thought you sold the A7IV and got an A1? All are fantastic options
I use a9 for photography and bmpcc4k might be trade to a7iv, Actually I like fx30 for travel but I don't want to invest to apsc pz lens. anymore.
Question for you - how does the 4K / 25FPS cropped APSC mode in the A7 IV compare to shooting natively on the FX30, for both low light and noise? Obviously rolling shutter in the A7 IV is much worse, but I'm wondering if cropping in for heavy motion scenes (which bring the rolling shutter lower than FX30) would basically make the image the same.
I don't think I tested that. Rolling shutter will be better on the A74 in crop mode than in full frame mode. Since I don't have the cameras anymore, I don't know how they would compare though.
Need some advice. I have an a7iii and I can either trade it in and get the a7iv or keep it and get an fx30. Which option would you recommend for a hybrid shooter?
If you need two cameras and are happy with the A73 for stills, get the FX30 for video. If you'd rather have one camera for hybrid work or are not happy with the A73 for stills, then then get the A74.
@@Josh_Sattin thanks!
Kind of an off the wall question but the "power save start time" is grayed out on my fx30. Do you know the reason why that would be? I keep leaving my camera on and draining my battery
I figured it out..
Is fx30 better then Fuji X-h2s?
After the new firmware 1.10 for the A7IV, has the camera overheated during your use?
The A7IV overheated on my three times in the course of three weeks earlier this year. I had the auto temp set to high, screen out, on a tripod, etc. This was one of the main reasons that I eventually sold the camera. I did recently buy it again because I do love this camera, but I do not rely on it for long form video recording. I don't remember seeing anything in the 1.1.0 firmware release notes about addressing the overheating.
If you're in the market for a FX3 I think getting these two cameras for much the same price might not be a bad move.
There are no APS-c sony lenses on the compatibility list of Sony focus breathing compensation.....Why would Sony launch a APS-C sensor with this feature but no lenses to make use of it....
so after doing so much research, the a7iv is better at video. There I said it, even tho the camera body of the fx30 is so nice. Don't @ me lol.
Why does nobody mention how HOT the a7iv gets? I rented it and it got extremely hot plus the LCD stupidly flips into where I plug cables so I had to leave the LCD in an odd position. If my a7r2 in 1080p overheats in 90f temp in sunlight then no way a7iv could survive (with grip and recording about 30 min the overheat icon began flashing on my a7r2).
I let the a7iv record in my bedroom pointing at TV and it got extremely hot to the touch. Wish Sony put a fan in a DSLR and I'd pay whatever to get it
What are you shooting this video on?
I think it was the Canon C70, but I am not 100% sure as I often switch up the camera.
like and sub ! great video !
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
so sharp....i can actually see the fleas in your beard
2,500 for an a7iv ? I bought the a7siii for 2,100 and could’ve gotten the a7iv for 1,900 no tax
Always talking about the noise. Irrelevant! Let me ask you if you're spending $2000+ on a camera, don't you at least have the knowledge to use the proper lighting for your scenes? Same for the composition and the depth of field. Won't you plan your shots accordingly? At least you could mention that you get noise ONLY if you don't have enough light. Also APSC or Super 35 is NOT a crop, it's the size of the sensor, you make it sound like a handicap, even though it has been the standard in cinema for the last 2-3 decades. All of that to say that Full Frame is NOT superior to APSC/Super 35, it's a matter of preferences and needs, which CZcamsrs always conveniently leave off.
Not everyone shoots in a studio……….. people in the real world can’t control most things
And apsc/s35 IS A CROP or smaller sensor when compared to full frame sensor full frame lenses. It’s easier to describe focal lengths when you reference FROM full frame.
